VISION TV / SAT Power Tester - V18-310 Introduction Instructions This innovative tester will assist professional installers of domestic TV and satellite systems, commercial and communal IRS, CATV and MATV. It will accurately simultaneously measure the DC voltage (30v Max) and DC current (10A max) passing through a 75 ohm coaxial cable. It will also simultaneously indicate if a 22kHz signal is present on the coax cable in satellite systems connected to: legacy satellite receivers SKY+, Sky+HD, Sky Q, Freesat, Freesat HD, dscr, SCR and DiSEq installations etc. IMPORTANT: The V18-310 TV/ SAT Power Tester requires a PP3 (6LR61, MN1604) 9V battery and the press to test button operated to make accurate current measurements, but for convenience it will indicate an approximate current value when line powered and/or the press to test button is not operated. The V18-310 TV/SAT Power Tester will pass RF frequencies with minimal attenuation so that voltage and current measurements can be made while operating TV and satellite equipment. 2

EXAMPLE 1: To test the 12V supply to a TV masthead amplifier. 1. Disconnect the masthead amplifier from the power supply. 2. Connect the TV/SAT Power Tester to the power supply (source). 3. Check the voltage is correct 4. If the voltage is correct, connect the masthead amplifier to the TV/SAT Power Tester (Load). 5. Press the red test button. Check the voltage and current display 6. If the voltage displayed is now lower than at {step 4.} or the current is higher than the masthead amplifier ratings label, there is a fault in the installation. 7. The fault is most likely found at a connection, such as a whisker of coaxial cable braid shorting across the centre conductor. The fault could also be a faulty PSU or masthead amplifier. 5

6

7

EXAMPLE 2: To test the LNB input of a satellite receiver 1. Disconnect the satellite receiver from the wall socket or LNB feed cable. Connect the TV/SAT Power Tester DC IN (Source) to the satellite receiver input 1 or input 2. 2. Check the voltage is either 18V for horizontal or 13V for vertical polarity. If using a Sky Q receiver check there is 12V from either input. 3. If the voltage is correct, connect the TV/SAT Power Tester DC OUT (Load) to the wall socket or LNB. Press the red test button. Check the voltage and current display. 4. If the voltage displayed is now lower than at {step3.} or the current is higher than the equipment ratings label, there is a fault in the installation. Check the 22 KHz LED is illuminated if a high-band signal is selected. 5. Any fault is most likely found at a connection point, such as a whisker of coaxial cable braid shorting across the centre conductor in the wall socket or at a connector. The fault could also be a faulty LNB or line amplifier. Note: Sky HD receivers have 2 inputs. Each can independently supply 13V or 18V DC up to a combined maximum of 275mA. Note: SkyQ receivers have 2 inputs. Each input can supply only 12V DC up to a combined maximum up to 275mA. 8

9

EXAMPLE 3: To test the LNB input of an IRS installation when powered by an EV5-100T launch amplifier or similar 1. We recommend this test is accomplished with the output of the amplifier disconnected from the system network. Disconnect the four LNB feeds from the dish. 2. Connect the TV/SAT Power Tester DC IN (Source) to the amplifier input marked H: Lo (green). Check the voltage display is showing 18V. 3. If the voltage is correct, connect the TV/SAT Power Tester DC OUT (Load) to the LNB feed marked H: Lo (green cable). 4. Press the red test button. Check the voltage and current display 5. If the voltage displayed is now lower than at point c) or the current is higher than the ratings label of the LNB, there is a fault in the installation. 6. The fault is most likely found at a connection point, such as a whisker of coaxial cable braid shorting across the centre conductor at a connector. The fault could also be a faulty LNB. 7. If the voltage drops below 18V when the LNB is connected it is also possible that the power supply has failed as it is unable to deliver enough power. 10

EXAMPLE 4: To test the power supply and load on an IRS installation 1. Disconnect the EV5-034 power supply from the DC auxiliary input of the EV5 multiswitch. 2. Connect the power supply to the DC input (source) on the meter. 3. Check the voltage reads 18V. 4. Connect the TV/SAT Power Meter DC out (load) to the Auxiliary DC input of the multiswitch. 5. Press and hold the red test button. 6. Check the voltage remains at 18V when under load. 7. Add the current rating for each device on the system including all multiswitches, the LNB and any amplifier. 8. Check the current displayed matches the total system load 9. If the voltage under load is below 18V check the power supply is not faulty. 10. If the current displayed is significantly higher than the calculated current, check for faulty connections (whiskers of braid) and also for faulty equipment. Use a process of illumination to check for faulty equipment. 11

12

13

EXAMPLE 5: To test the voltage and current in a larger IRS installation 1. Disconnect all 5 cables of the trunk from the amplifier/power source. 2. Connect the 18V from H: Lo of the EV5-100T to the DC In (source) connector of the TV/SAT Power Meter. 3. Check the display reads 18V. 4. If the display is less than 18V, check/replace the power supply. 5. Connect the DC OUT connector of the TV/SAT Power Meter to the H: Lo terminal of the next piece of equipment in the trunk network to power the system. 6. Press and hold the red test button. 7. Read the current consumption of the system. Does the reading match the ratings plate calculation for the system? 8. If the current reading is higher or lower than expected, check the connections for a whisker of braid at a connector then check each piece of equipment by substitution. 9. Break the system into sections by disconnecting the truck cables at convenient points. Then compare the current consumption on each section. 14
