Introduction Background Digital broadcast production standards are split into high definition and standard definition formats. Both formats are transported using a single copper (coaxial) interface operating at 270Mbit/s for standard definition and 1.485Gbit/s for highdefinition. Over the last decade the transition to digital has been widespread and the installation of 270Mbit/s equipment and infrastructure is ubiquitous. More recently, high-definition formats have been used for content acquisition and mastering in preparation for HD transmission and to generate masters at significantly higher resolution than afforded using standard definition. A wide-range of HD formats is supported by the 1.485Gbit/s copper interface but typically broadcasters have settled on a small subset of the total possible standards. Within Europe, high-definition acquisition and production is common at 1080i50 and 720P50 as defined by SMPTE specifications 274M and 296M respectively. In North America the equivalent standards are 1080i59.94 and 720P59.94. Digital conversion between HD and SD standards is typically achieved using adaptive polyphase filtering. Whilst high-definition down-conversion from HD to SD is suitable for SD distribution and final play-out, it is not suitable for contribution of HD content because the down-conversion process must remove most of the high-frequency detail to satisfy Nyquist limits imposed when converting to a lower definition format. The DP-400 uses a completely different approach in order to allow the contribution of HD content over existing SD 270Mbit/s links. Using a compression technology called DIRAC, the DP-400 allows HD content to be contributed using SD 270Mbit/s links whilst maintaining the high-resolution detail contained in the original HD image. Page 1

Introduction (Continued) DIRAC Professional Profile (also known as VC-2) BBC Research & Innovation engineers developed DIRAC as a flexible compression technology to support a wide range of compression applications ranging from web streaming to 1080P contribution. The Profession Profiles were developed to utilise existing SD 270Mbit/s and HD 1.485Gbit/s transport links and are characterised by low latency and low compression ratios. However, the DIRAC Profession Profile is quite different to other compression techniques in that the compressed bit stream can be viewed using any traditional video DAC or waveform monitor that has been designed to monitor SD 270Mbit/s signals. This is possible because the compressed data only utilises 8 bits out of every 10 to code the HD image, the remaining 2 bits carrying a down converted and crudely quantised version of the original HD image. The down converted image bits are located in the 2 most significant bit locations whilst the compressed data occupies the lower 8 bits of each video word. This ensures that the resulting waveform after digital to analogue conversion appears as a noisy version of the original. Although only 4 grey-scale levels, the quality of the compatible image is more than adequate for confidence monitoring. Waveform Monitor shows encoded SD 270Mbit/s output Image shown is a down-converted and quantised version of the HDSDI input

SMPTE Standardisation The SMPTE number 2042 is used for the basic VC-2 specification. 2042-1 is the basic specification and 2042-2 defines the VC-2 levels. The two documents for mapping 1080P to a 1.5Gbps SDI are parts of 2047, i.e. SMPTE RP 2047-1 specifies the VC-2 coding constraints and RP 2047-1 specifies the mapping of the compressed bits onto a 292M SDI. When this document was released, the mapping from HDSDI to 270Mbps had been submitted to SMPTE but was not yet completed so it currently does not have an assigned RP number. Throughout this document, VC-2 or Dirac Pro are used interchangeably to describe the profile that is used in the DP-400D/E codecs. DP400 HDSDI to 270Mbps The DP-400 uses the DIRAC Professional Profile to convert between HD and SD formats. The DP-400E uses multi-level wavelet transforms to split the frequency components of the HD signal into bands and the coefficients of these bands are then coded efficiently using variable length codes. The resulting data packets are used in place of the active pixels in the SD image along with a crudely quantised down converted version of the HD image. The DP-400D implements the reverse process, decoding the 8-bit compressed data into wavelet filter coefficients before inverse transforming them back to the original HD image. ANC data compatibility Compressed data only occupies the active pixels in the SD signal leaving the ancillary data space available for embedded data such as PCM audio or Dolby-E. The DP-400E detects and automatically re-maps up to 16 channels of embedded audio SMPTE 272M and ancillary time code data SMPTE 12M-2 2009 (LTC and VITC) from the HD input to the SD output. At the decoder the reverse process occurs, with embedded audio and ancillary time code data from the SD input relocated to the HD output. Page 2

Web Browser control The Ethernet module present in the CH-100P (Chameleon rack), used to communicate with the rack and any DP-400ER/DP-400DR cards fitted, is a Digi Connect ME device manufactured by Digi International Inc. The unit supports a wide range of Ethernet communication protocols. A CH-100P is shipped with the following fixed IP addresses, also shown on the side and rear of the rack near the IEC mains inlets for easy reference, allowing control of the unit via a direct connection to a lap top or pc: 192.169.001.101 For customer deliveries with more than one CH-100P rack, the units will be numbered consecutively, i.e. an additional two racks would have the following addresses: 192.169.001.102 192.169.001.103 Subsequent units would follow this pattern (.105,.106 etc.). The CH-100P racks are shipped with a utility program Finder.exe that can be used to determine the IP address that is currently assigned to any unit. When the Finder.exe utility opens, it scans the LAN looking for Digi Ethernet modules. Note that it may take a minute after plugging in or powering the Ethernet module before the LAN negotiates the connection with the Digi module. Hit Refresh List in the left column after a minute or so if the utility fails to see the unit when you start it. In some situations it is possible that the Windows Firewall or other firewall such as Zone Alarm will block the Digi Device Discovery from being able to see the unit. It is advisable to turn the Windows Firewall off while performing these tasks. When the application has completed, a list of Digi devices will be displayed as shown below: Page 11

Web Browser control (continued) Clicking on the Configure IP Settings button will open up the option table as shown below. To set the CH-100P to allow DHCP connections, click on the Automatically obtain network settings via DHCP button. Then the Password Netsilicon should be entered to enable the changes to be applied (NB. N is upper-case). If you wish to set your own IP address then click on Manually obtain network settings button and set the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway parameters. Once these parameters been set, the password Netsilicon should be entered to enable the changes to be applied (NB. N is upper-case). In both cases, once the IP address is configured, Reboot Device from the main menu must be clicked. This brings up the window shown on the following page, where the Password Netsilicon should be entered to reboot the Digi device within the DP400 (NB. N is upper-case). Power cycling the CH-100P will also reconfigure the new IP address but the user will need to wait about one minute after powering the device on for communication to be established. Page 12

Web Browser control (continued) Note that if a static IP address is assigned that is incompatible with the LAN, all communication including access to the module s settings will no longer be possible over the LAN. If this happens a crossover cable must be used with a PC to access the Digi modules settings using the finder.exe utility. In order to control the CH-100P directly from your pc, you will need to connect a crossover cable (Cat5/Cat6) between the Ethernet port on the rear of the CH-100P and the Ethernet port of your pc or laptop. (Some newer computers can autosense the requirement for a cross over cable and so can be cabled with a normal Ethernet cable, the computer will reconfigure it's IP port to mimic a crossover cable.) DP-400 Cat 5 /Cat 6 Crossover Cable Ethernet PC or Laptop Direct Connection Between PC & Web Server In order for the computer to be able to talk to the CH-100P you will then need to set the TCP/IP properties as shown overleaf (NB ensure that the IP address you choose does not conflict with any CH-100P IP address). In Vista, for example, one way to access the TCP/IP properties is to click the Start button, click Control Panel, double click Network and Sharing Center. Then click Manage network connections, right click Local Area Connection and then click Properties. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties, this should give you the page shown overleaf. Page 13

Web Browser control (continued) Selecting OK will then configure the computer LAN properties to enable your pc to communicate with the DP400. The next step is to open an internet browser window (such as Explorer) and enter the IP address of the unit e.g. 192.169.001.101 and the CH-100P browser page should appear as shown in the CH-100P Operational Menus. If you are using a DHCP server connection, a crossover cable is not required. You simply connect the CH-100P to your server using a standard Ethernet cable and type in the address of the unit, as found by finder.exe, into an internet browser window. Trouble shooting IP connections The following is a guide to the most likely reasons for not being able to connect to the CH-100P: 1.The CH-100P is shipped with a Default address of 192.169.001.101 (.102,.103 etc.). If you wish to connect to a DHCP router, such as the Linksys WRT45G, the DP400 must be reconfigured with finder.exe to allow this (see previous Section). 2.If you wish to directly connect to the CH-100P but don't want to use the Default IP address (192.169.001.101 etc.), the CH-100P must be reconfigured with finder.exe (see previous section). Page 14

Web Browser control (continued) 3.If the IP address has been reconfigured, Reboot device must be run or the CH-100P power cycled for the address to be accepted. If the power is recycled you should wait at least a minute before using finder otherwise it is unlikely to find the CH-100P. If finder was run too early and it reports No devices found, just hit Refresh List after approximately one minute from power on. 4.If the Finder application does not detect the CH-100P check that firewall applications such as ZoneAlarm are disabled. The CH-100P may not be detected if a firewall application is enabled. 5.If the Finder application correctly detects the IP address of the unit but the unit is not visible when the IP address is entered into the browser then a firewall application may still be operating. 6.Windows XP and Vista applications have a Network Sharing facility, which must be enabled in order to allow network visibility. To change the network discovery setting, click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center. Click the arrow button to expand the Network Discovery section, click Turn on network discovery, and then click Apply. Page 15

CH-100P Chameleon Chassis Operational Menu By opening a web browser such as Internet explorer or Mozilla Firefox and entering the IP address corresponding to the CH-100 rack (e.g. 192.169.001.101), the control interface page will be sent from the web server in the Digi module to the browser and will appear as shown below: CH-100P chassis fitted with a DP400ER card. CH-100P chassis fitted with a DP400DR card. Any DP400 encoder/decoder cards detected in the CH-100P chassis are indicated as shown in the examples above where DP400ER/DP400DR cards have been detected in Slot 4. Looking at the rear of the CH-100P chassis, Slot 4 is the card slot closest to the Ethernet port and Slot 1 is the card slot closest to the IEC mains inlets. To access the Operational and Monitoring Alarm pages associated with a particular card, simply click on the relevant slot number (e.g. Slot 4 in the previous example) and you will be taken to the Operational menu for that card. The Monitoring Alarm page for a card can only be accessed via it's Operational menu. A detailed breakdown of the Operational and Monitoring menus for the DP400ER and DP400DR are given in the following sections. Page 16

DP-400ER Operational Menus Clicking on any DP400ER Slot ID (as shown on page 7) will result in the following DP400ER operational menu becoming visible: From this menu the user is able to set-up specific operational requirements. NB Units shipped directly from the factory will have all user adjustable settings set to AUTO. Changes made to menu settings are remembered by the unit and so it will power-up in the operational mode it powered down in. If users experience problems when turning units on in different operational scenarios, please check the operational menu and reset settings to AUTO to see if this solves the problem. Page 17

DP-400ER Monitoring Alarms By clicking on the Monitor Alarms tab on the DP400ER setup menu, the alarm and status page shown below is displayed: The data displayed is relevant to the signal that is selected as input (normally input A of the DP400ER). If Input A is valid its SMPTE standard and line/frame rate are reported back (SMPTE 274M: 1080i50 in the example above. CRC Status flag is green if all is okay with the input signal and turns red when a CRC error is detected. Input A and/or B are indicated as present. PLL lock data Status flag will display as green when the receive PLL is locked to the input signal and turns red when signal lock is lost. Embedded VPID data is extracted and displayed as raw bytes along with interpreted descriptors. Any AES Control packets detected are also displayed. X= AES pair present/o = no AES pair present. The FPGA Die Temperature and VCCINT/VCCAUX read backs are only concerned with the operation of the main device within the brick and can be considered engineering data to aid debug in the event of a fault with the unit. By hitting the BACK button, the user is returned to the DP400ER setup menu described in the previous section. Page 22

DP-400DR Operational Menus Clicking on any DP400DR Slot ID (as shown on page 7) will result in the following DP400DR operational menu becoming visible: From this menu the user is able to set-up specific operational requirements. Page 23

DP-400DR Operational Menus (Continued) The following user adjustable controls are available: Decoder Setup Operating Mode (Factory default AUTO) The Operating Mode options are: AUTO Automatic detection of source input VC-2 Turn VC-2 decoding ON On-Fail TPG SDI output is moving bars Note: Only 1080i50/59 and 720p50/59 VC2 inputs will be decoded by the DP400DR (see below). In AUTO mode all other SDI standards such as 3G 1080p50/59 Level A down to SD-SDI input to the unit will be bypassed and if no input is detected the unit will output HD-SDI colour bars with embedded tones. Standard (Factory default AUTO) The VC-2 Standard options are: AUTO Automatic detection of input standard 1080i50 Set input standard to 1080i50 720p50 Set input standard to 720p50 1080i59.94 Set input standard to 1080i59.94 720p59.94 Set input standard to 720p59.94 Note: The DP-400DR input standard refers to the original signal that has been VC-2 encoded. It would be quite appropriate to consider the DP-400D video standard as the output standard that will be generated from the VC-2 encoded signal. Any other input standards (3G SDI or SD-SDI) will be automatically bypassed. Page 24

DP-400DR Operational Menus (Continued) SDI In (Factory default AUTO) The SDI In options are: AUTO Automatic detection of source input IN A Use BNC A as input source IN B Use BNC B as input source Note: When the input source is set to AUTO, the A input has priority over the B input so if signals are connected to both A and B inputs, the signal connected to the A input will be selected. This can be used to ensure that a backup signal is selected automatically if the signal on the A input is accidentally disconnected. SDI Out A (Factory default AUTO) The SDI Out A options are: AUTO Output from BNC A OUT is either decoded VC2 stream, bypassed non-vc-2 stream or TPG if no input present. VC-2 Inputs will be treated as VC-2 encoded IN A By-passed input present on BNC A IN IN B By-passed input present on BNC B IN SDI Out B (Factory default AUTO) The SDI Out B options are: AUTO Output from BNC B OUT is either decoded VC2 stream, bypassed non-vc-2 stream or TPG if no input present. VC-2 Inputs will be treated as VC-2 encoded IN A By-passed input present on BNC A IN IN B By-passed input present on BNC B IN Page 25

DP-400DR Operational Menus (Continued) Ancillary Data Mapping Enable (Factory default ON) The Enable options are: ON Time Code (ATC) data present in VC2 input stream is re-embedded into output HD-SDI stream. OFF Any ATC data present in VC2 input stream is NOT re-embedded into output HD-SDI stream. HD F0 Line (1080i50 Factory default 9) The HD F0 line can be set to one of the following values: 9-20 ATC data is re-embedded on this line in F0 none No embedded ATC in F0 Note: If the line chosen already contains audio control packet data, this will be preserved and the ATC data will be embedded after the audio control packets. HD F1 Line (1080i50 Factory default 571) The HD F0 line can be set to one of the following values: 571-583 ATC data is re-embedded on this line in F1 none No embedded ATC in F1 The preferred locations for ATC data in HDTV systems are as follows (please refer to SMPTE 12M for more information). Saving Menu selections All operational parameters are stored in a non-volatile electrically erasable memory (eeprom) within the CH-100P chassis. Any parameter changes made using the browser template will be automatically stored in the eeprom. When the CH-100P is turned on the contents of the eeprom will be read to initialise the unit. The eeprom is accessed as soon as the FPGA has configured and all settings will normally be restored within 1 second. In the factory the eeprom is configured with the default settings listed in the operational menus. Important Note: The unit will be in an operational condition within 1 second from power up regardless of the condition of the TCP IP (browser) interface. Page 29
