Welcome Millfield has a long standing reputation for outstanding provision in all areas of the creative arts. This calendar gives you a flavour of the exciting offering for the coming year. Of course, at the heart of our programme are concerts and performances given by our pupils. However, we also embrace professional musicians in our International Concert Series in the and art exhibitions in the Atkinson Gallery. To avoid disappointment please check seat availability via the contacts below. Tea, cakes and a wonderful diversity of musical styles guaranteed. 4 September - 11 October 2017 2 October 2017 Atkinson Gallery Stewart Geddes PRWA Exhibition Open Musicians Platform 9.30am-5.00pm (closed on Sundays) / 7.15-9.00pm / The Atkinson Gallery is proud to be welcoming the President of the Royal West of England Academy, Stewart Geddes, for a lively and colourful solo exhibition. An open platform showcasing Millfield s musical talents in the stunning surroundings of the Johnson Hall. This is an ideal opportunity for all pupils to gain experience performing in a formal concert.

5-7 October 2017 Showcase 7.15-9.00pm / A limited number of tickets are available from blinco.a@millfieldschool.com The jewel in the crown of the charitable fundraising year. All pupils are invited to audition and the selected acts perform on the following nights. Song, dance, comedy and a few surprises are always sure to feature on the bill. 9 October 2017 Staff and Scholars Recital A highlight of the music calendar that features performances from both Millfield staff and its Music Scholars in a hugely enjoyable collaborative showcase. 17 October 2017 Tennis Centre House Song 6.30-8.30pm / All pupils participate in the House Song competition. Each house grouping presents a massed choir and chamber choir piece to the whole school and parents. A wonderful evening that demonstrates the strength of house spirit that pervades Millfield life. An evening that is often the highlight of a pupil s year! 8 October 2017 Fine Arts Centre The Big Draw 11.00am-2.00pm / Art Scholars only Millfield takes part in the national annual drawing event, The Big Draw. Planned collaborations include Year 9 pupils and Art Scholars joining forces with Millfield Prep.

30 October - 9 December 2017 Atkinson Gallery Adam Berry Exhibition 11 November 2017 Johnson Sessions 14 November 2017 BBC Big Band with Claire Martin Part of the International Concert Series 9.30am-5.00pm (closed on Sundays) / Adam Berry is an established artist based in Doncaster. In this exhibition Adam displays work that explores the idea of a journey, made in response to his travels across the UK. His responses aim to capture each location s distinctive atmosphere or spirit of place. A dedicated sessions showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the diverse musical talents of Millfield pupils in an intimate gig setting. 7.30-9.30pm / All welcome Tickets 15.00 from the Music Office 01458 444404 or millfieldschool.com/bookingform Through a diverse repertoire arranged and curated by the BBC Big Band and award-winning vocalist, Claire Martin, this concert will celebrate the music of the twentieth century s most iconic bands, composers and vocalists, whose legacy and influence defined a classic era of music. Featuring music by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and their contemporaries - alongside a sparkling selection of vocal numbers made famous by the most iconic Big Band Divas of the era, including Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and, of course, in the centenary year of her birth, Ella Fitzgerald. An unmissable evening of world-class music celebrating the Swing Legends and Big Band Divas! World-class musicians a brilliant musical force. The Telegraph 13 November 2017 The Egg Theatre, Bath Shakespeare Schools Festival Performance 7.30-9.30pm / All welcome Tickets available from theatreroyal.org.uk/the-egg Millfield is once again proud to be part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. This national festival brings Shakespeare alive with fantastic opportunities. Year 9 and 10 pupils will present a performance of Hamlet.

Tea and Ballet 4.30-5.30pm / A wonderful opportunity to watch some of our very best ballet dancers performing work from their Royal Academy of Dance examination classes. Evening Recital A wonderful opportunity to watch Millfield s top musicians perform in a formal recital. Please join us to celebrate the outstanding talents of our pupils in an evening of top quality music. 16 November 2017 Festival of Languages 7.15-8.15pm / 21 November 2017 Wells Cathedral Year 9 Choral Service 28-30 November & 2 December 2017 Senior Play: The Crucible 7.15-10.00pm / 6 December 2017 Community Dance Show 7.15-9.00pm / A collection of songs, sketches and poems celebrating the wide range of languages studied at Millfield. All performed by languages pupils. 7.00-8.00pm / I Should Cocoa : a service of choral music, readings and reflections primarily for Year 9 pupils and their parents on the subject of chocolate. Our big production this autumn is Arthur Miller s classic play about the Salem witch trials. Although set in the seventeeth century, the play has profound contemporary resonance. Expect a striking set design and vivid, psychologically perceptive performances from our pupils. A Dance show featuring Millfield dancers and dance groups from local schools, youth dance companies and dance schools.

Tea, cakes and a wonderful diversity of musical styles guaranteed. 25 January 2018 Funny Bones Sketch Show 7.15pm / A screening of Millfield s own TV comedy sketch show, Funny Bones, written, filmed by and starring our pupils! 23 January 2018 A Level Drama Devised Practical Showcase 7.15-8.45pm / The A level Drama performances are an evening of breathtaking theatre. Pupils demonstrate their expertise and invention refined over their two year course. The productions are always exhilarating and demonstrate the tremendous imaginations of the young directors and actors, giving them an opportunity to show their wonderful creativity and performance abilities. 29 January 2018 Foyer Millfield Musician of the Year Final 7.15-8.30pm / A stunning evening of solo performances, in which the winner of each instrumental group competes to be awarded the first ever Millfield Musician of the Year prize. 1 February 2018 Wells Cathedral Procession of Light and Choral Eucharist for Candlemas 7.00pm / The feast of Candlemas is celebrated at Wells Cathedral, including a beautiful candlelit procession through the ancient aisles.

1-2 February 2018 7 February 2018 19 February - 17 March 2018 Atkinson Gallery Spanish Play 7.15-8.30pm / Tea and Dance 4.30-5.30pm / 8 February 2018 MA and Other Postgraduates Show 9.30am-5.30pm / Pupils studying Spanish perform a play in their chosen language. A showcase of dance, which includes performances by the Jazz, Modern, Contemporary and Street dance classes. Sergeant Pepper s 50 Years Our annual celebration of artistic talent from across the UK returns in the MA and Other Postgraduates Show 2018. This exhibition gathers some of the very best talent in the field of fine art from the top MA and other postgraduate programmes across the UK. 6 February 2018 AS Drama Practical Exam Assessment 7.15-9.00pm / An exciting evening, in which AS Drama pupils tackle challenging roles in excerpts from a variety of plays. To mark the 50th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles on 1 June 1967, Millfield will celebrate with an evening of live performances. Considered by critics and music lovers to be one of the greatest records ever made, and a major cultural moment not only for this country but globally, the album features classic songs including, A Day in the Life, With a Little Help from My Friends, She s Leaving Home and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The evening will explore the music and stories around the recording, release and subsequent life of this seminal album. It will be presented in music and other art forms such as narration, drama and dance. 26 February 2018 Foyer An Evening of Chamber Music 7.15-9.00pm / A chance to see all of Millfield s Chamber Ensembles perform in a salon-styled evening recital.

27 February 2018 1 March 2018 5 March 2018 6-7 March 2018 Year 11 GCSE Drama Scripted Performance 7.15-9.45pm / The GCSE Scripted Performances are a highlight of the Drama calendar. They are an opportunity for GCSE candidates to demonstrate their skills and experience at the end of the course, applying them to an extract of script for assessment. Street Parish Church Tea and Music 4.15-5.00pm / An informal concert that enables pupils of all abilities to perform in a relaxed setting. Tea, cakes and a wonderful diversity of musical styles guaranteed. Evening Recital A wonderful opportunity to watch Millfield s top musicians perform in a formal recital. Please join us to celebrate the outstanding talents of our pupils in an evening of top quality music. Short Cuts 7.15-8.15pm / A showcase of raw acting talent. This evening of very short plays is an opportunity for older, non-drama pupils to display their skills as performers in a challenging, modern, edgy repertoire. 1 March 2018 Gould Piano Trio with Mark Simpson Part of the International Concert Series 7.30-9.30pm / All welcome Tickets 15.00 from the Music Office 01458 444404 or millfieldschool.com/bookingform Since winning the first prize at the Premio Vittorio Gui in Florence and the Melbourne Chamber Music Competition, the Gould Piano Trio is considered as one of the finest of its kind performing today. Their widely diverse repertoire displays a strong stylistic conviction appreciated by audiences and critics alike. They celebrate their 25th anniversary year with performances of a new commission from British composer Mark Simpson, supported through Beyond Borders and the PRS for Music Foundation. Simpson will also join the trio for a performance of one of the most remarkable works to come out of World War II: Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time. Composed whilst Messiaen was a French prisoner of war, his Quartet is a highly emotionally engaging, enduring and improbable masterpiece, which seems to touch the outer edges of human experience. Pure Gould Strad Magazine 13 March 2018 Wells Cathedral Choral Concert 7.30-9.30pm / For over 20 years, Millfield has performed major choral works in Wells Cathedral, with our School Choir combining with Millfield Chorale, our adult choral society. This year sees the massed choir of over 200 singers perform Karl Jenkin s The Armed Man: Mass for Peace alongside a professional orchestra.

Johnson Sessions A dedicated sessions showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the diverse musical talents of Millfield pupils in an intimate gig setting. Composition Concert An incredible showcase of musical creativity, in which professional musicians perform pupil compositions. The evening comes to a climax with the premieres of our A level pupils impressive creations. A Level Drama Scripted Coursework Showcase 7.15-9.00pm / An exciting evening, in which A level Drama pupils demonstrate their acting prowess by taking on challenging roles in a excerpts from a variety of plays. 21-24 March 2018 28 March 2018 Dance Show Bitesize Drama 7.15-9.30pm (21-23 March), 5.00-7.15pm (24 March) / Over 100 pupils will be taking part in this celebration of dance. They will be performing a wide range of styles including Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz and Ballet. We look forward to thrilling you with sparkling evening performances. 7.15-8.15pm / Our talented Speech and Drama students perform monologues and duologues, in an evening of variety and entertainment.

Recent years have seen exceptionally creative productions of Skellig and Odyssey, a modern reimagining of Homer s classic tale. The Junior Play always attracts an enthusiastic and committed cast and crew of Year 9 and 10 pupils, and gives them a wonderful opportunity to perform a full-scale show. 9 June 2018 Johnson Sessions A dedicated sessions showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles. A celebration of talent from across the South West of England. 25 June 2018 Poetry Festival: Film Poems! 7.15-8.45pm / Our annual celebration of the film poem gives our pupils an opportunity to create short, experimental films, tackling a range of subjects, from the playful to the profound. 27 June 2018 Let s Dance 7.15-8.45pm / A celebration of Dance performed throughout the year, featuring work choreographed by a professional choreographer. The evening will end with a professional company performing. 26 June 2018 Music for a Summer s Evening 7.15-9.00pm / A wonderful musical occasion to celebrate the end of the school year. Featuring soloists, chamber music and school ensembles, the Music School s final evening concert will showcase a huge variety of musical styles. 28 June 2018 Junior House Plays: Performance 7.15-8.45pm / For one night only the Meyer Theatre plays host to the final event of the theatrical calendar.
