1. General Information 1.1 Preface This installation manual is intended to help you connect and put into operation the S6-R Reader. 1.2 Correct usage This device is intended exclusively for use in attendance recording and access control systems. Further details are described in Chapter 1.6. Use for any other purpose than the one described is not permitted. 1.3 Safety precautions This device has been constructed and tested in accordance with all currently applicable technical regulations. It left the factory with all safety features in perfect working order. To maintain this condition and to ensure risk-free operation, the user must observe the instructions and warnings given in this operating manual. Installation and assembly of electrical equipment may only be carried out by a qualified electrician. During installation, please ensure that the requirements specified in the relevant equipment safety standard for the unit are adhered to since non-compliance could affect the safety of the device. Before switching on, ensure that the operating and control voltages connected do not exceed the permissible levels as specified in the technical data. This unit conforms to EN 60950, protection class III. The units must be operated using a safety extra-low voltage (SELV). Electromagnetic compatibility: The unit is designed for use in residential, commercial and light-industrial environments. The PCB can be damaged by static electricity discharge, so relevant precautionary measures must be observed, such as grounding. These units must not be operated until they are fully installed. If you believe that safe operation is no longer possible, take the unit out of operation and secure it against accidental use. If a failure or malfunction in the unit might result in injury to persons or animals or in damage to works equipment, such damage or injury must also be prevented by taking additional safety measures, such as installing limit switches and safety devices. Switch off the power supply before opening the device. 4 DORMA

1.4 Further Sources of Information The S6-R reader is operated within an access-control system. The documentation for the following system components must be observed. DORMA EAC hardware manual Access control software (host) 1.5 Disposal This device has been manufactured using high-quality materials and components that can be recycled. Information for EU Countries This device is subject to European Directive 2002/96 EC and therefore must be disposed of separately from household waste. As the manufacturer, we will take back our electric and electronic products and dispose of them for you free of charge. Alternatively, you may also contact your waste disposal company. 1.6 Functional principle The S6-R Reader reads ID card data using a contactless connection and sends data to a higher level control unit, where they are evaluated to check whether the ID card is authorised or not. The result is sent to the S6-R Reader, which emits a visual and audible signal to indicate authorisation or not. The control unit communicates with the S6-R Readers via an RS485 bus. DORMA 5

2. Installation 2.1 Requirements for trouble-free operation The following environmental factors may affect the range and functions of the contactless read procedure. Metal There must be no metal objects such as metal wall panelling within a square area measuring 120 x 120 mm and 30 mm deep. Adequate clearance must be ensured at the planning or installation stage. The reader range is reduced if the clearance distance cannot be complied with. 120mm 120mm 30mm Antenna field of another reader To prevent mutual interference, you must not install two readers closer to each other than the minimum specified distance. The minimum distance depends on local conditions, but it should always be greater than 50 cm. min. 50cm 2.2 Preparation 2.2.1 Wall box A wall box (flush-mount or pattress box) is required to install S6-R Readers. The flush-mount or pattress box design must comply with DIN 49073-1. To ensure correct installation, the flush-mount box may only be fitted a maximum of 4 mm behind the wall surface or plasterwork and must be installed in a vertical position in the wall. The front edge may only vary a maximum of 1.5 mm from a straight line parallel with the wall surface. min. 50cm 2.2.2 Cabling Connecting cables must feature a maximum cross-section of 1.5 mm². Data cables should consist of shielded twistedpair cabling with an impedance of 120 Ω. Detailed information regarding cable types and lengths and other specifications for the planning of access systems using our components are included in our DORMA EAC Hardware manual.
