HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA GENERAL MEDIA INFORMATION

THE HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA VIENNA - THE CITY OF MUSIC Some of our cities are singled out from others and referred to as Cities of Music. Among these, you have to imagine cities in which music, ringing out and fading away, becomes part of the architecture. These are cities with major and minor streets, three-four and four-four traffic, green rests, chromatic steps, parks full of divertimentos and a sky overhead which is an everlasting symphony of colour. This description of a musical city by Ingeborg Bachmann proves especially true in the case of Vienna, as, although music is at home all over the world, it is somewhat more at home in Vienna. Each year, millions of people come to Vienna to experience the myths, anecdotes and pictures of life as well as the sounds of this city. Vienna is the city of musical heritage, but also the city of the musical present all of this is brought together in the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA for its visitors to hear, see, feel and experience. VIENNESE MUSICAL TRADITION The greatest musical figures in history have lived and worked in Vienna. The Vienna Philharmonic, the orchestra known for its unique sound, has its origins and home in this city. The musical venues and educational institutions of Vienna are renowned and rich in tradition. There is barely another city in which that much has been written about music, in which people have made such efforts to explain music, to look at its true nature, but also to preserve its mythical character.

MUSICAL INTEGRATION There is no other city in the world that has so well understood to act as a platform for integrating artists and the arts. It is no coincidence that Peter Altenberg spent time pondering on and writing about a Schubert portrait by Gustav Klimt in Vienna and many of his author friends tried to match this. Vienna does not only encourage the playing of music, it also encourages writing or painting about it to the same degree. This tradition of integration and animation is being continued with HAUS DER MUSIK, located at the historic Palais of Archduke Charles at Seilerstätte 30. Conceived as a hub for all musical venues in Vienna, HAUS DER MUSIK provides room and space for aesthetic, scientific, popular and artistic encounters with music. MOTIVATION Vienna is the world s capital of music. Otto Nicolai (1810-1849), founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, lived in the historic Palais of Archduke Charles. Each year, millions of visitors come to Vienna for the music. The language of music is understood everywhere and the interest in speaking it is constantly growing. HAUS DER MUSIK offers metaphorically speaking musical language courses and hopes to play a role in helping its visitors to speak as well as understand the language of music. This is achieved through experience zones on seven floors, which have been structured according to the latest scientific, technical and tonal insights. HAUS DER MUSIK was officially opened on 15 June, 2000-190 years and 6 days after the birth of Otto Nicolai. The fascination of music of the past, present and future is perceptible through all senses; music has again moved back into the historic Palais Archduke Charles with HAUS DER MUSIK.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA THE EXHIBITION HAUS DER MUSIK invites its visitors on a musical journey. On five levels, music becomes audible and visible in real and virtual rooms. Infotainment, edutainment and entertainment these three principles pervade the sound museum. Experience and adventure are linked with each other both in an impressive and enjoyable manner. GROUND FLOOR INNER COURTYARD / STAIRCASE The centre of the building is the roofed, air-conditioned inner courtyard with a small room in which special exhibitions are shown free of charge. The inner courtyard is surrounded by a number of businesses dedicated to music: The violin maker Anna Hohenegger has her workshop here, instruments, high-value HiFi institutions and the Self-Service Café Nicolai invite you to linger and relax. The musical education project STAIRPLAY combines an innovative, unconventional approach to music teaching with musical theory content. This new interactive installation allows users to playfully experience and learn about notes and musicmaking in just a few steps - at every step, in the truest sense of the word.

FIRST FLOOR VIENNA PHILHARMONIC MUSEUM In the splendid historical rooms of the former Palais of Archduke Charles you will find the Museum of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, whose founder, Otto Nicolai, also lived here. The history of the world famous orchestra is now presented at the site where it all began. Here you do also find the newest attractions of HAUS DER MUSIK: the fascinating, interactive Waltz-Dice-Game. In our specifically equipped concert hall on the museum's first floor, you can experience the highlights of the Viennese New Year's Concert and the Schönbrunn Summer Night Concert. Highest audio-visual quality and a festive ambiance allow you to dive in and experience this exceptional cultural events as if you had been there in person.

THE SECOND FLOOR SONOSPHERE Let your ears take a stroll through the amazing world of tonal and sound phenomena. In a prenatal sensory rush, visitors relive their first musical experience many years after their birth. In the Instrumentarium, they discover larger-than-life instruments in the Sea of Voices the voice as the most natural musical instrument. A long aisle leads from the Instrumentarium to the Polyphonium, a place of excellent surround sound to relax in. Adjacent to it, there is the Sound Gallery. Visitors experience sounds of all kinds on numerous audio elements on the wall - from human sounds to natural soundscapes up to acoustic phenomena of the solar system - the Sound Gallery is full of surprises.

THIRD FLOOR THE GREAT MASTERS OF VIENNESE MUSIC TRADITION Vienna s worldwide reputation as a city of music has been primarily shaped by the musical genius of some renown composers. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss, Gustav Mahler, the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern all of them are introduced in their contemporary environment on the history level through historic documents, models, costumes, modern installations and presonal items. Films and databases provide the focus of the setting and intensify the edutainment experience. The EXODUS, an artistic installation, remembers musicians that were forced into exile or murdered during the Second World War. "NAMADEUS," the interactive computer programme based on Mozart's musical game KV 516f offers visitors the opportunity to playfully turn their names into original Mozart interpretations. The Virtual Conductor Have a go at conducting the Vienna Philharmonic! Each visitor has a chance to do this with the Virtual Conductor. The musicians obey the visitor, follow the tempo and rhythm of the baton. They are happy to reward him / her with applause. However, the orchestra s patience is not without its limits.

FOURTH FLOOR VIRTO STAGE: YOUR PERSONAL MUSIC THEATRE virto stage allows you to direct your very own personal music and opera experience. Storyline, stage design and music are in your hands. Your movements and gestures bring about your own original multimedia opera. Two stages feature two distinct topics. zeitperlen lets you experience how to merge music, vocals and vision in a unique way. A multimedia opera where you are essential in its production. z oo concert, has been specifically created for our young visitors and takes them on a musical adventure trip. Musical souvenirs, amusing, interesting and practical items are offered in the HAUS DER MUSIK Shop as a souvenir following the visit and completion of the 4 th floor.

TOP FLOOR EVENT-VENUE DACHGESCHOSS Events held in a pleasant and inspiring environment leave a lasting favorable impression. This emotional added value is but one of the many pluses that Haus der Musik offers you as an event location. On the top floor, choose between the attractively designed Event hall with perfect acoustic shape and Dachgeschoss, an exklusive venue with a breath-taking view above Vienna's city roofs. MUSEUM IN PROGRESS HAUS DER MUSIK is permanently updated so that new historical, musical and technical elements can be incorporated. Thus, each journey through the virtual and real worlds in the HAUS DER MUSIK provides a new musical experience.
