HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA GENERAL MEDIA INFORMATION
THE HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA VIENNA - THE CITY OF MUSIC Some of our cities are singled out from others and referred to as Cities of Music. Among these, you have to imagine cities in which music, ringing out and fading away, becomes part of the architecture. These are cities with major and minor streets, three-four and four-four traffic, green rests, chromatic steps, parks full of divertimentos and a sky overhead which is an everlasting symphony of colour. This description of a musical city by Ingeborg Bachmann proves especially true in the case of Vienna, as, although music is at home all over the world, it is somewhat more at home in Vienna. Each year, millions of people come to Vienna to experience the myths, anecdotes and pictures of life as well as the sounds of this city. Vienna is the city of musical heritage, but also the city of the musical present all of this is brought together in the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA for its visitors to hear, see, feel and experience. VIENNESE MUSICAL TRADITION The greatest musical figures in history have lived and worked in Vienna. The Vienna Philharmonic, the orchestra known for its unique sound, has its origins and home in this city. The musical venues and educational institutions of Vienna are renowned and rich in tradition. There is barely another city in which that much has been written about music, in which people have made such efforts to explain music, to look at its true nature, but also to preserve its mythical character.
MUSICAL INTEGRATION There is no other city in the world that has so well understood to act as a platform for integrating artists and the arts. It is no coincidence that Peter Altenberg spent time pondering on and writing about a Schubert portrait by Gustav Klimt in Vienna and many of his author friends tried to match this. Vienna does not only encourage the playing of music, it also encourages writing or painting about it to the same degree. This tradition of integration and animation is being continued with HAUS DER MUSIK, located at the historic Palais of Archduke Charles at Seilerstätte 30. Conceived as a hub for all musical venues in Vienna, HAUS DER MUSIK provides room and space for aesthetic, scientific, popular and artistic encounters with music. MOTIVATION Vienna is the world s capital of music. Otto Nicolai (1810-1849), founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, lived in the historic Palais of Archduke Charles. Each year, millions of visitors come to Vienna for the music. The language of music is understood everywhere and the interest in speaking it is constantly growing. HAUS DER MUSIK offers metaphorically speaking musical language courses and hopes to play a role in helping its visitors to speak as well as understand the language of music. This is achieved through experience zones on seven floors, which have been structured according to the latest scientific, technical and tonal insights. HAUS DER MUSIK was officially opened on 15 June, 2000-190 years and 6 days after the birth of Otto Nicolai.
