This new series, premiering in the 2012-2013 season, will feature a starry line up of popular entertainers representing world music, rock, soul, hip-hop, comedy, pop, literature, current events, lifestyle trends and more. The LIVE AT KNIGHT season currently features six extraordinary acts such as the Florida premiere of Idle Warship with Talib Kweli and Res; the Arsht Center debut of Lenine, Calypso Rose and

Esperanza Spalding; and the triumphant return of Diego El Cigala and Kodo to the Center. Additional performances will be announced in the coming months. Tickets for any of the LIVE AT KNIGHT performances may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org. We are elated to bring some of the world s top entertainers to the acoustically superb John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center, with the launch of the LIVE AT KNIGHT series, said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. Our Knight Concert Hall is an ideal setting for these stellar performances as it will complement the eclectic sounds and transformational storytelling that these artists provide. In addition, this varied group of performers embraces the cultural melting pot of our diverse community and will surely engage and captivate audiences with its international appeal. Programming for the 2012-2013 LIVE AT KNIGHT SERIES features the following: The Adrienne Arsht Center presents IDLE WARSHIP: TALIB KWELI & RES October 19, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. Knight Concert Hall Tickets: $30 to $100 $100 ticket ensures best seats available, post-show meet and greet and photo with Idle Warship Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli has a talent for summing up ambitious concepts in powerfully concise phrases. Spin Magazine TALIB KWELI is one of the most admired and respected rappers of his time, best evidenced by Jay-Z's famous Black Album rhyme: "If skills sold, truth be told/i'd probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli." TALIB KWELI s buzzworthy duo act IDLE WARSHIP, with singer/songwriter RES, will make its anticipated Florida premiere at the Center s Knight Concert Hall. In 2009, the famed rapper joined longtime collaborator RES, a Billboard Dance chart-topping artist and model, to form IDLE WARSHIP. The hip-hop/electro group released their first official album, Habits of the Heart, in November 2011. In a bold and indefinable mash-up of influences, the 12-track album uniquely mixes hip-hop, electronic and alternative music. Accompanying IDLE WARSHIP will be a nine-piece chamber orchestra headed by local conductor and composer, Sam Hyken. Hyken, who has more than 10 years of experience in the orchestral world, having played and taught at New World Symphony as well as the Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO), will lend his symphonic ear as he and his eight classical players join IDLE WARSHIP to create an unconventional way of listening to hip-hop. This performance will mark the first time that TALIB KWELI works with an orchestral section. In addition, the critically successful MC and gifted hip-hop artist will also perform hits from his solo career such as the crowd favorites I m on One and Get By, a track produced by Kanye West.

The Adrienne Arsht Center and Bi Musica present DIEGO EL CIGALA November 10, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $40 to $150 The Spaniard took hold of the work with his innate elegance. - Rolling Stone After a showstopping sold-out performance last fall, Grammy Award-winning Spanish Gitano singer DIEGO EL CIGALA returns to the Arsht Center for a second year in a row to captivate audiences with his groundbreaking blend of bolero, Argentine tango, Latin jazz and flamenco. DIEGO EL CIGALA will perform hits from his extensive catalog including songs from 2003 s Lagrimas Negras, a legendary collaboration with renowned Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés hailed by The New York Times as Album of the Year and "one of the great new cross-pollinating documents of Latin music." Additional successes include Picasso En Mis Ojos, which featured celebrated Spanish guitarist and composer Paco de Lucia and Latin jazz master Jerry Gonzalez, as well as Dos Lagrimas which seamlessly continued his illustrious fusion of flamenco, traditional Latin American melodies and Spanish folk music. Cigala & Tango, DIEGO EL CIGALA s most recent Latin Grammy-nominated album, is a riveting live recording of the artist s prestigious Teatro Gran Rex concert in Buenos Aires. The charismatic singer heightens the odds by aiming to fuse Spanish flamenco with the equally gritty and powerful South American tango. The resulting disc is electrifying. - The Observer, UK. The Adrienne Arsht Center presents LENINE January 18, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. Knight Concert Hall Tickets: $45 to $75 Now everybody can touch Brazil. Cultures communicate, distances are shrinking. Largely thanks to Lenine. - New York Times With a stellar international career spanning three decades, Brazilian superstar LENINE is making his way to the Arsht Center with a fusion of cultural influences and a unique song roster. For his Arsht Center debut, LENINE will perform hits from his highly-acclaimed career, including award-winning favorites Ninguém Faz Idéia and "Martelo Bigorna," as well as new songs from his tenth album, Chão (Ground in English), which was released in October 2011 and produced by Bruno Giorgi, JR.Tostoi and LENINE himself. Chão consists of ten songs marked by intriguing, unconventional sounds like a canary s chirp, a kettle s whistle, a child s heartbeat, waterfalls and a hypnotic digital ping-pong noise courtesy of a Facebook chat. LENINE is a songwriter, record producer and arranger who has won five Latin Grammy Awards and a slew of Brazilian Music Awards. His music ranges from alternative rock to sounds from everyday life. In addition, LENINE has written songs for prominent Brazilian artists such as Elba Ramalho, Maria Bethania, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Maria Rita, O Rappa, among others. He has also produced albums for Maria Rita, Chico César, Pedro Luis e a Parede, Cheka, and soundtracks for soap operas, sitcoms, movies, dance musicals and theater.

The Adrienne Arsht Center presents CALYPSO ROSE February 9, 2013 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $25 to $65 Rose is a venerable diva of an all-but-vanished style. - NPR Known as the reigning Queen of Calypso for her enduring charisma and unflinching voice, CALYPSO ROSE is bringing a taste of the Caribbean for her debut at the Arsht Center s Knight Concert Hall to help kick start Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago which is February 11-12, 2013. CALYPSO ROSE, the first female Calypso artist to receive acclaim in Trinidad and Tobago during the peak of Calypso music, is most noted for her hit song Fire in Meh Wire, which has become a nationally recognized Calypso anthem. In addition to this legendary hit, the artist will perform songs from her longstanding career including Israel by Bus, the world music chart-topping lead single from her latest album Calypso Rose. McArtha Lewis, CALYPSO ROSE, was born in the small island of Tobago in the West Indies. She started singing at the age of 15, and for over 50 years has been a trailblazer in a maledominated music genre. CALYPSO ROSE was the first woman to win the coveted Calypso King crown in Trinidad & Tobago. Organizers quickly changed the title to Calypso Monarch, which Rose went on to win for five consecutive years. The Caribbean crooner has taken Calypso music all over the world with her witty lyrics and infectious tempo. She has shared the stage with some of the biggest international stars, including Michael Jackson and Bob Marley. The Adrienne Arsht Center presents KODO ONE EARTH TOUR 2013: LEGEND March 9, 2013 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $30 to $75 Kodo s music can raise the roof! - The New York Times Following its sold-out performance in the Knight Concert Hall three years ago, KODO returns for another show that goes beyond a concert to a spectacle of sound, color, and dance. The explosive power of these masters of the ancient tradition of taiko drumming is heart-pounding, bone-shaking and a not-to-be-missed experience. When KODO began touring the world three decades ago, the performers discovered that the sound of the taiko had a similar effect on its listeners: wherever people heard it, there was an instant sense of community, of oneness. Through this, KODO created the One Earth Tour, and carried by the unique sound of the taiko, it has traveled the world with its message of shared humanity, environmental awareness, and peace. KODO has performed more than 3,400 concerts on five continents and their music continues to produce startling new sounds and unforgettable performances.

The Adrienne Arsht Center presents ESPERANZA SPALDING: RADIO MUSIC SOCIETY April 19, 2013 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $35 to $95 Ms. Spalding is something else: a charismatic whirlwind proudly hailed, for a while now, as some kind of vital infusion for jazz. - The New York Times With an inimitable style and spirited presence that is deeply rooted in jazz, ESPERANZA SPALDING has made an impressive mark in the music world since her 2006 solo debut. A few South Florida fans may recall Spalding s high-profiled performance at President Obama s fundraiser at the Arsht Center in 2010. For her anticipated return, the stunning songstress is poised to once again captivate Miami audiences with a full concert showcasing her myriad of talents, all of which are deeply ingrained in her music. ESPERANZA SPALDING is celebrated for her ability to unify the sounds of jazz, neo-soul and world music, creating a fusion that is unparalleled. The talented bassist, vocalist and composer will perform the brilliant compositions of her new release, Radio Music Society. Inspired by her desire to write for large ensembles, Spalding has crafted her performances to spotlight the talents of her 12-piece world class band including Spalding on electric bass, double bass and lead vocals. Radio Music Society is a companion release, rather than a sequel, to Spalding s previous internationally acclaimed Chamber Music Society, which culminated in her becoming the first jazz musician to win the Best New Artist GRAMMY Award in 2011. Radio Music Society is ESPERANZA SPALDING s most diverse, ambitious and masterful recital yet. Each of the 12 songs is accompanied by conceptual music videos, which further express her inspiration and story behind each track. All programs, artists, ticket prices, availability, dates and times are subject to change without notice. Visit www.arshtcenter.org for up-to-date information for details and schedules.
