John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educator. He helped found the philosophic school of pragmatism, the school of functional psychology, and was a leader of a progressive reform movement in American education. The Collection contains biographical information, a course syllabus taught by Dewey, reprints of Dewey s writings, a photocopy of the manuscript for Principles of Education, articles and reprints about John Dewey, and book reviews of books about Dewey. Collection, [Box #, Folder #], Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library Biographical Note John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont, on October 20, 1859. He attended the University of Vermont and Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his PhD in 188. Dewey taught at the University of Michigan from 188-189, the University of Chicago from 189-190, and Columbia University from 190-190. University of Chicago President William Rainey Harper convinced Dewey to leave University of Michigan and become the chair of the Department of Philosophy, Psychology, and Pedagogy. Dewey resigned from the University of Chicago and went to difference after disagreements with Harper regarding administration and financing of the university s educational program. Dewey died on June 1, 1952.
