Music and art programs We offer music and art programs for children and youth with special needs, up to the age of 21. Siblings are welcome to register in the same program. s may vary with different programs. All programs cost a fee. Music: group music, one-to-one music therapy and adapted music education lessons Art: group programs include dance, drumming, paint and clay Combined Music and Art: family programs taking place on public holiday weekends Please see program information for specific age requirements. Our staff All programs are run by accredited music therapists and teachers, and professional artists who specialize in designing and leading programs. Registration process Print out and complete a registration form, found on our website at www.hollandbloorview.ca/arts and return it by mail, hand delivery or fax. Participants must be able to successfully participate in a structured group. If a participant requires dedicated one-on-one support, the family will be asked to provide it. 2
Confirming your child s spot After we receive your registration form, you will receive a confirmation and payment receipt/invoice in the mail, or we may call you to find out more specific information about your child. Programs may not run if a minimum enrollment level is not achieved. We will confirm this with you a minimum of two weeks prior to the start of the season. If programs are full, you will be informed that your child is on the waitlist for the next available spot. New participants All new participants must either attend a Music Therapy Assessment (for music programs) or a Screening Visit (for art programs). Please see the Music and Art sections for more information. You will be contacted directly to schedule these, once we receive your registration form. Cancellation policy To receive a refund, participants must withdraw from a seasonal program at least two weeks prior to the program start date. A $50 service charge will be deducted. For cancellations less than two weeks prior to the start of the season, the full program cost will be charged. It allows a chance to understand how the client functions within a musical environment and how music can help realize their potential. To enquire about music therapy assessment details please contact the program administrator. Up to 21 After registration, you will be called directly to schedule the assessment $80 One session up to 45 minutes, year round Music therapy Music therapy is used to promote the child s cognitive, social, physical and psychosocial health and wellbeing. Accredited music therapists use music and musical elements to encourage self-awareness, creative expression, communication and learning. In group therapy settings, music is also used to help facilitate interaction with peers. Fall - only music programming Holland Bloorview Rocks! By popular demand, Holland Bloorview Rocks! is back. Participants must be interested in practicing for and performing in a fundraiser rock band concert. Participants will first attend a Jam Session to determine eligibility for the program. Please complete a registration form to sign up or contact the office for more information. 9 to 18 Practice: Tuesday Evenings, Sept.19 Nov.14 Dress rehearsal: Nov.18 Concert: Nov. 19 $50 New spring music programming Holland Bloorview Glee This is a music therapy group focused on singing and performance with an emphasis on pop and musical theatre. 7 to 14 Therapy: Tuesdays, 6 6:45 p.m. Recital: June 16 $250 Let s Jam (ages 14 to 18): Tuesdays, 7:15 8 p.m. In the spring season only, this is a music therapy group for those interested in playing an instrument in a rock band. Recital on Saturday, June 16, 2018. This program costs $250. 14 to 18 Therapy: Tuesdays, 7:15 8 p.m. Recital: June 16 $50 Cancellations: Please note that one-to-one adapted music education and therapy require 24-hour cancellation notice to reschedule, otherwise the session is forfeit. The sessions must be completed within a single season and cannot be carried over to the next season. At the beginning of a season, the music instructor or therapist will talk to you about options for using the make-up week. 5
Adapted music education Learn to play an instrument! Clients can choose from a variety of traditional and adapted instruments and innovative music technology. Instruments include: the Virtual Musical Instrument (VMI)*, piano, guitar, voice, violin, percussion and ukulele. Different teaching methods are used, including elements of the Suzuki method and the Figurenotes notation system. *The VMI is music software developed at Holland Bloorview. The program allows musicians to see themselves on a TV screen with colourful shapes and objects that make different musical sounds when touched. Arts Art Program Orientation Visits The Program Orientation Visit is for new (i.e. the child has never participated in a Holland Bloorview art program before) participants registering in art programs. All new participants will be scheduled to come in for a visit, meet with our team and see the program space. It s an opportunity for us to provide families with an overview of the program and ensure that we can properly meet your child s needs. These visits help us learn how to provide the best possible experience for your child in our unique program environment. New participants to art programs will be scheduled to come in for a Program Orientation Visit before being confirmed in a spot. Dance theatre Participants will enjoy being creative together through a playful exploration of movement, dance, drama and visual art. Drum circle Come together in a circle of rhythm, rhymes, beats, friends and folly. Participants will have the opportunity to play with a range of percussive devices.
