I am excited to be leading the Spring in Costa Rica Festival. Costa Rica is truly a land of beauty and warmth, a culture rich in music and history, a people hospitable and welcoming. In addition to the option of performing individually and having exchange concerts; ensembles will sing in the festival choir captivating local audiences. The slated repertoire for the festival choir is eclectic including Caldwell and Ivory s Hope for Resolution, Ernani Aguiar s Salmo 150, Craig Hella Johnson s Light of a Clear Blue Morning, Z. Randall Stroope s A Red, Red Rose and more. The repertoire reflects and amplifies the spirit of the land, the festival and that which each of us expresses through our song. Join us in Costa Rica for the Spring Festival Kind regards, Eric Dale Knapp With Eric Dale Knapp 3
DESTINATION Costa Rica is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. While the country has only about 0.25% of the world s landmass, it contains 5% of the world s biodiversity. Around 25% of the country s land area is in protected national parks and protected areas, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. Costa Rica has many kinds of music. Most of the music and representative folklore comes from the north of the country, including the Nicoya Peninsula (Mayan culture) and the Atlantic coast (Afro- Caribbean culture). Costa Rican music is marked by a rhythm known as tambito as well a distinctive musical genre known as punto. Two examples are the punto guanacasteco from Guanacaste Province, and the sancarleño from San Carlos in Alajuela Province SPRING INTO COSTA RICA 4
LEADER ERIC DALE KNAPP Eric Dale Knapp is a dynamic conductor whose commitment and energy empower the musicians he leads to give performances that stir the souls of his audiences. Maestro Knapp s mastery of the repertoire spans the full spectrum, from fresh, authentic interpretations of traditional works to visionary performances of multimedia works of the new millennium. A versatile musical leader, equally adept with Classics and Pops, Knapp s finely honed ability to communicate through both gesture and speech place him at the forefront of the rising conductors of his generation. In 2001 Mr. Knapp s Carnegie Hall debut met with critical acclaim. International appearances have included being the first American to perform a series of organ recitals at the International Bach Festival in Warsaw, Poland; being guest conductor for the International Advent Sing in Vienna, Austria; conducting the Vratsa Philharmonie of Bulgaria in the Bulgarian premiere of Aaron Copland s Appalachian Spring Suite; and serving as guest conductor with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonie and Kromeriz Chamber Orchestra in the Czech Republic, and the Basel Academic Orchestra in Switzerland. Knapp s wealth of experience spans the breadth of the musical world, having served as Music Director and Sr. Organist at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA and as Conductor-in-Residence at MidAmerica Productions, where he conducted the New England Symphonic Ensemble and Festival Chorus annually at Carnegie Hall. He has enjoyed success as a Music Educator at elementary, secondary and collegiate levels, and as a conductor of community and professional choral and orchestral organizations.
