BAND PROGRAM The St Ives High School Band Program has gained an outstanding reputation over recent years for their excellent performances. This program has been created to give students the attention needed to build successful bands and ensembles with vast performance and learning opportunities. The Band Program offers enjoyment through developing musical skills as well as building a friendly and cohesive team environment. The program currently consists of a Concert Band, Jazz Combo, String Ensemble, Micro Orchestral Fusion, Choir and several Rock Bands or percussion ensembles. To enter the program, students pay an annual fee of $450, payable with school fees in Term 1-2018, or in instalments across the two semesters. Students within the Band Program will have the opportunity to participate in all bands at no additional cost. If students participate in the Choir only, fees are $200. Students are also invited to participate in the Music Tutorial Program at $40 per 30- minute lesson, subject to positions being available. Our successful music program requires the commitment of band students and their parents/carers. It is important that band students attend the rehearsals regularly, practice their music, and commit to band competitions and showcases, some of which will be held on weekends. Your commitment to this program is invaluable. Concert Band performing at Port Melbourne Primary School, 2016

CONCERT BAND The St Ives High School Concert Band is an exciting opportunity for students from Year 7 to Year 12 who play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. The band rehearses every week under the direction of an experienced Musical Director. Performance opportunities for the Concert Band are plentiful throughout the year, including eisteddfods, NSW State Band Contest, interstate band tours, school functions and community events and performances. Repertoire performed by the Concert Band consists of a mix of popular music, television and film soundtracks, light classics and contemporary wind ensemble works. Rehearsal time: Public Transport: Tuesday mornings. 7:30am in the hall. (Thursday mornings, additional rehearsals as necessary) For students living in the Hornsby area the Transdev 594H-City Express leaves Hornsby station at 7:04 and stops daily outside St Ives Primary at 7:29am. Forrest Coach Lines bus 194 St Ives Chase-City stops daily outside the high school at 7:27am. Musical Director: Ms K Lovell, Band Program Coordinator, LOTE/Support faculty Concert Band performing at the NSW State Band Contest, 2016 JAZZ COMBO The Jazz Combo is a flexible performance ensemble that provides an opportunity for students in the band program to focus on individual part playing, increase their stylistic awareness, and perform more challenging repertoire. It also provides a format in which students have the opportunity to perform solos as their confidence and technical ability grows. Additionally, students are encouraged to develop their skills of improvisation. The Jazz Combo often accompanies HSC Music Performance examinations. Furthermore, the Jazz Combo has become regular attendees at the Big Band Blast in Port Macquarie and performs for school functions and community events. Membership of the ensemble is by invitation and audition as vacancies become available. Rehearsal time: Public Transport: Friday mornings. 7:30-8:40 am in C15 For students living in the Hornsby area the Transdev 594H-City Express leaves Hornsby station at 7:04 and stops daily outside St Ives Primary at 7:29am. STRING ENSEMBLE This provides an opportunity for string players to combine in a small, close-knit performance group with a broad repertoire of both classical and popular styles, adapting to the students abilities and musical tastes. Traditionally, string ensembles are classically based so this allows students to experience a more diverse range of music across the Band Program. Within this group, there is a focus on developing string technique and ensemble awareness. In recent years, the String Ensemble has performed regularly for the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival, Ryde Eisteddfod, the St Ives High School Arts Exhibition and many other school functions and community events and performances. Rehearsal time: Public Transport: Tuesday morning. 7:30 8:45am in C14 For students living in the Hornsby area the Transdev 594H-City Express leaves Hornsby station at 7:04 and stops daily outside St Ives Primary at 7:29am every day. Forrest Coach Lines bus 194 St Ives Chase-City stops daily outside the high school at 7:27am. Musical Director: Mrs G Andresson, Music faculty Combined String Ensemble and Micro Orchestral Fusion at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival, 2017 MICRO ORCHESTRAL FUSION This ensemble was developed in 2016. It is an extension ensemble for String, Woodwind and Brass players from the String Ensemble and Concert Band. It has a classical focus, providing a broader range of repertoire for these young musicians, as well providing an avenue for orchestral playing. Students are encouraged to become independent musicians, learning their role as a member of an ensemble. They are also encouraged to each assist with running rehearsals to develop their ensemble awareness and score reading. Membership of the ensemble is by invitation and audition as vacancies become available. Rehearsal time: Public Transport: Monday mornings. 7:30-8:45am in the hall For students living in the Hornsby area the Transdev 594H-City Express leaves Hornsby station at 7:04 and stops daily outside St Ives Primary at 7:29am. Forrest Coach Lines bus 194 St Ives Chase-City stops daily outside the high school at 7:27am. Musical Director: Ms K Lovell, Band Program Coordinator, LOTE/Support faculty

CHOIR This vocal group has been established to give students performance opportunities while developing their musical skills in a group setting. It functions in a similar manner to the other ensembles with set rehearsals, performances, camps and tours. These students participate in larger combined choirs, such as for In Concert at Town Hall with approximately 800 students from around NSW, and the Secondary Schools Vocal Festival, as well as performing for school functions such as international visits, Loud Shirt Day and presentation evenings. They are also involved regularly in performing for the community. 2016 saw the growth of the group to include numerous male students, creating a balanced SATB* ensemble. In 2017, the Choir were part of recording the vocals for the school Musical, Bring it On. *soprano, alto, tenor, bass Fees for Choir are $200. Rehearsal time: Wednesday mornings. 7:45-8:45am in the hall Musical Director: Ms K Lovell & Ms K Hawkins, TAS faculty Choir performing at the finals of the North Shore High Schools Music Spectacular, 2017

ROCK BAND and SMALL ENSEMBLE PROGRAM Rock Bands and small ensembles such as the percussion ensemble are created for students studying instruments in the music tutorial program or playing in the band program. Bands are supervised by a music teacher and rehearse one session per week. Students will also have the opportunity to perform at school functions and concerts. Rehearsal time: Times vary depending on groups - Music Tutorial Space. Contact: Ms K Lovell, Band Program Coordinator, LOTE/Support faculty 91441689 ext 117 BAND PROGRAM OBLIGATIONS: We cannot achieve a successful band program without placing certain obligations on students, parents and the school. St Ives High School provides regular rehearsals, rehearsal space, instrument hire, professional tuition, professional musical directorship and the management of the entire band program. The following obligations are expected from students and parents: Students are expected to practise regularly, commit to the band program for the full year and fully co-operate with Band directors. Students are required to undertake private tuition in addition to band rehearsals. This can be through private arrangement or using the school s music tutorial program. Students are required to attend camps, tours, concerts and competitions which can fall on weekends or during the school week. Students are required to wear the band uniform at all performances. Parents must notify their band conductor and music tutor in advance if their child is unable to make a rehearsal or tutorial. This includes excursions and examinations. Parents commit to supporting their child's participation by way of instrument hire or purchase, payment of band fees and expenses as well as private tuition costs and facilitating attendance at band rehearsals and performances.
