POETRY SURPRISES! POETRY DAY IRELAND THURSDAY 26 APRIL 2018 3 Poetry surprises. It knocks on your door and runs away. It greets you on the street with a face you haven t seen in years. Look in the mirror and poetry shows you the back of your head. It can rearrange the stars and resurrect the past. When your breath snags and your heart thumps; when something strokes your neck and makes you jump: that s poetry. Whether it s a poem hiding in the attic or the electric shock of a particularly powerful jolt of verse, we have asked everyone to spring some poetry surprises on Poetry Day Ireland this year. Meanwhile, we at Poetry Ireland are constantly surprised and delighted by the very many wonderful and inspirational events that are programmed by dedicated poetry lovers across the length and breadth of Ireland each year. So, choose an event, sit back, and enjoy a poetic surprise on Thursday 26 April! connect with us See poetryday.ie for full details of all events on Poetry Day Ireland @poetryireland @poetryireland.eigseeireann @poetryireland #PoetryDayIRL #PoetrySuprises brought to you by thank you! POETRY OUT AND ABOUT Dirty Dancer Rita Ann Higgins In the Tai Chi garden in Hong Kong an old man the only smoker there flicks through a porno magazine. He has a huge wart on his lip. His laidback, scratch my arse, bite me look says to anyone who wants to read it: Better to be in the park with porn than four-walling it on the 80th floor the icicles of lonely jerking at my heels. From Ireland is Changing Mother, by kind permission of Bloodaxe Books 1/9 Read about this poem on poetryday.ie Supported by: RTÉ Supporting the Arts Love Poem with Sandwiches Padraig Regan I had this plan: to come up with titles for poems like Nocturne with a Bottle of Sparkling Wine or Aubade with Figs & Water Glass but instead of writing the poems I d just copy the titles onto slices of white bread using blue ink & a brush & then I d use them to make sandwiches with things like tamarind & Roquefort & whole thickets of herbs to mask the rusty taste of the ink & feed them to this guy I was dating because the first time I saw him naked in daylight the hairs on his belly reminded me of that texture you find at the centre Of a loaf when you grip the Crusts & pull it apart. From Delicious (2016), by kind permission of The Lifeboat Poetry Pamphlet 8/9 Read about this poem on poetryday.ie Supported by: RTÉ Supporting the Arts Ekphrastic Haiku Gabriel Rosenstock crann plumaí faoi bhláth leis i súil an chorcráin choille 梅が枝やうそひめの目に咲きにけり ploom tree flooerin in bullie s ee an aw plum tree flowering too in the eye of the bullfinch Published by kind permission from Gabriel Rosenstock THURSDAY 26 APRIL 2018 #PoetryDayIRL Read about this poem on poetryday.ie POETRY SURPRISES! Cinderella, Backwards after John Glenday and Angela Carter Claire Dyer Happily Ever After he unbends his knee, plucks a glass slipper from her perfect foot, thinks, Surely, this should be fur? Next, he uncurls his lip at the bloodied stumps of some sisters toes, mounts a vast black stallion and rides away as an invitation is unprinted, a Ball unplanned, exquisite footwear is never left upon a stair. And she goes back to midnight to unchime the clock, dance in reverse with a man who will one day unsearch for her while six footmen return to mice, a golden coach to pumpkin as an orchestra untunes, her dress re-rags, an impossible Fairy Godmother dissolves to dust. And there will be a Prince somewhere who unbelieves in love again as she sweeps Once Upon A Time back in through the door. 4 THURSDAY 26 APRIL 2018 POETRYDAY.IE #POETRYDAYIRL POETRY SURPRISES! Liffey Swim Jessica Traynor In the dream, the Blessington Street Basin fills with the Liffey s stout-bottle waters, but still the swimmers come, in droves, on the stray sovereign of an Irish summer s day. The river courses towards the quays, turning concrete roadways to canal banks that shrug their shoulders into the dark water; a man rises, seal-like in his caul of silt, to wave. 8 9 7 Poetry Trail Map Discover poems about the animals and plants at Fota! 10 11 12 Daily from Apr - Oct: Time Animal 17 10.45 Penguins 12.45 Cheetahs 2.15 Siamang Gibbons 4.00 Cheetahs 4.30 Penguins 5.00 Seals 17 13 3 LION ENCLOSUR ASIAN SANCTUARY NTRANCE 17 Stitches Sinéad Morrissey 15 Cheetah Run 4 2018 TAKIN & MARKHOR 2019 ASIAN BEARS There has been extravagance in speech and every spilled, exploded word has been a stitch in a blanket made for an imaginary baby. The words went south where the sun was, but stayed hungry. A name came in the third month. A face followed. A hair type, a footprint, but the stitiches showed. Imagination s cloth too coarsely woven for life to catch and cover stitching over. And then blood. Inevitable, true. Simple and strong enough to cut all falsehood through. Later the screen said darkness no spine, no heart. And the stitches came apart. From On Balance (2017), by kind permission of Carcanet Press Ltd. 16 7/9 Read about this poem on poetryday.ie Supported by: RTÉ Supporting the Arts 2 1 14 Postscript Seamus Heaney And some time make the time to drive out west Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore, In September or October, when the wind And the light are working off each other So that the ocean on one side is wild MAIN ENTRANCE With foam and glitter, and inland among stones The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit By the earthed lightning of a flock of swans, Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white Their fully grown headstrong-looking heads Tucked ir cresting or busy underwater. Useless to think you ll park and capture it More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there, And there, at the edge of vision, my parents, ready to join the swimmers, gesture their cheerful farewells. #PoetryDayIRL www.poetryday.ie A hurry through which known and strange things pass As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways And catch the heart off guard and blow it open From Spirit Level, by kind permission of Faber and Faber From Liffey Swim (2014) by kind permission of the author and Dedalus Press 5/9 Read about this poem on poetryday.ie Supported by: RTÉ Supporting the Arts Dublin Bus Poems We are delighted to welcome Dublin Bus on board as a new partner for Poetry Day Ireland this year.
