Position Opportunity Director of Music Christ Church Cathedral Indianapolis, Indiana Christ Church Cathedral invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Music, available on or before December 1, 2014. The Organization http://www.cccindy.org Christ Church Cathedral seeks a new Director of Music to further its mission: to widen the circle of God s embrace, with heart and voice. Christ Church Cathedral is a 176-year-old Episcopal congregation located on Monument Circle in the heart of Indianapolis. The Cathedral has identified three core values that guide its work. We find Christ by: encountering others in community, drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds serving our neighbor, reaching out to those on the margin appreciating beauty, especially in liturgy and sacred music The Cathedral has a strong musical tradition that reaches back more than 150 years, making music at the highest artistic level with both children and adults. The primary purpose of the music program is to support worship in the full expression of Anglican liturgy, Sunday to Sunday and season to season. The Cathedral has three worship services on Sundays: a said Rite One Eucharist at 8 AM; a sung Rite Two Eucharist at 10 AM; and a Santa Eucharista with music at 1 PM. During the school year, there is also a sung Evensong on Thursdays at 5:15 PM. This service is part of the rule of prayer, which includes morning and evening prayer and a noon mass each weekday. In addition, the Cathedral offers diocesan and community services at times of celebration and mourning. The Cathedral today has two choirs: The Cathedral Choir of children and professional men; and the mixed-voice Coro Hispano. The Cathedral Choir traces its roots to the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys that was founded in 1883 in the centuries-old English Cathedral choir tradition. The Girls choir was founded in 1945. Both boys and girls are now part of the Cathedral Choir. The Coro Hispano was founded in 2000 and combines the best of the Anglican tradition with the best of Latino music and culture. Young choristers receive weekly vocal and music theory instruction, training in sight singing and musicianship, and regular spiritual formation.

Page 2 of 5 The Cathedral s choirs have sung by invitation in the United Kingdom and in Europe. In addition to worship services, the choirs perform in concert, broadcasts, and recordings. The broader music program includes choral and instrumental concerts and organ recitals presented by both resident and guest artists and ensembles. The repertoire of the Cathedral choirs is broad reaching and includes chant; music of the renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, and modern periods; contemporary music; and a growing focus on Latino music, both new and traditional. The congregation welcomes the opportunity to learn and hear music that is new or unfamiliar. The music program is supported by three fine organs: the Chancel Organ (Hellmuth Wolff and Associates, Op. 32, 1990); the Ruth Lilly Memorial Gallery Organ (Taylor and Boody Organ Builders, Op. 19, 1992); and the Frederick W. Weber Memorial Continuo Positive Organ (Brombaugh Organ Builders, 1996). The music program has developed a strong partnership with the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Many of the professional men in the choir are IU students; Cathedral organ scholars have been IU undergraduate and graduate students; and IU instrumentalists and ensembles frequently perform in concerts at the Cathedral. Christ Church is also a leader in the artistic community of Indianapolis and has partnered with Butler University, the University of Indianapolis, the American Guild of Organists, the American Pianists Association, the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and many other groups. Over the past year, the leadership of the Cathedral engaged in a process of community listening that resulted in a new strategic vision. In addition to initiatives related to communications and space planning, the Cathedral identified several key ministry priorities: Evangelism to a growing downtown: Establish relationships with and build connections to growing downtown neighborhoods. Establish a vibrant network of outreach and spirituality-focused small groups and develop additional weekend worship, perhaps offsite. Evangelism with Hispanic Community: Develop and implement a strategic plan to attract, welcome, integrate, and empower the growing Latino population of the Indianapolis metro area, using our congregation s diversity, inclusivity, and location as our primary drivers. Outreach: Develop a collaborative compassion ministry with our civic, business, and religious partners focused on providing hands-on ministry in our downtown neighborhood. The music program of Christ Church Cathedral will contribute strongly to all three of these priorities.

Page 3 of 5 The Opportunity The Director of Music will join a vibrant, caring, and nurturing Episcopal community that identifies appreciating beauty, especially in liturgy and sacred music, as a core value in furthering its mission. S/he will have the opportunity to align the program with the Cathedral s new strategic vision and to expand and enrich the music program, making truly Anglican music that is as global as the Anglican Communion. The Director will be asked to establish the program s leadership role as the Cathedral seeks to expand its reach into an increasingly diverse community; to respond through liturgy to changing patterns of church attendance; and to attract the growing population of young adults and others who live in downtown Indianapolis. The Director will have the opportunity to reestablish the tradition of a volunteer choir, drawing singers from the congregation. S/he will be challenged to find new ways to increase participation of children in the music program. S/he will develop the unique qualities and talents of children, professional singers, and volunteers as members of the Cathedral s choirs, and will do so with strong support from the Dean, the clergy, and a congregation that loves to sing. The Position The Director of Music provides leadership and vision to ensure that a strong musical program is an essential part of the life of Christ Church Cathedral. The Director reports directly to the Dean and assists the Dean in crafting liturgy. In collaboration with the clergy, the Director develops and implements a comprehensive musical plan and program for the liturgical year that aligns with the overall strategic vision of the Cathedral. The Director oversees and is assisted by the Cathedral s music program staff. The Director of Music is responsible and accountable for all choral and instrumental music for the Cathedral. S/he recruits, auditions, trains, and conducts the Cathedral s choirs of children and adults. S/he develops, implements, and oversees a comprehensive musical studies program for young singers. S/he ensures that volunteer singers are welcome members of the Cathedral s musical life, and s/he nurtures a strong sense of community among singers. The Director engages contract singers and instrumentalists. S/he maintains the highest possible standards of excellence in all musical programming and performance. The Director of Music collaborates with other Cathedral staff and programs, especially in the area of youth formation, and with parishioners through the Choir Parents Guild, Sacred Arts supporters, and those who volunteer for fundraising and other Cathedral functions. S/he develops partnerships and collaborations with the greater Indianapolis music and arts community. S/he actively seeks opportunities for music to expand the reach of Christ Church Cathedral throughout the community. The Director of Music is a full-time position that requires participation in Sunday and special worship services throughout the year.

Page 4 of 5 Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be a mission-minded builder with the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the Canons, Cathedral leadership, and staff in planning and conducting worship services that are both connected to and coordinated with the overall Cathedral ministry. S/he will be familiar with the Episcopal liturgy and will have a deep and expansive understanding of the Anglican musical tradition. The successful candidate will be a superb musician who combines a thorough knowledge of choral and vocal performance with significant experience in leading both professional and volunteer singers in a broad range of liturgical and religious repertoire. S/he will have the proven ability and pedagogical skill to inspire singers to a consistently high level of excellence in performance. The successful candidate will be experienced and skilled at working with children and developing young voices. S/he will have a high level of proficiency as a keyboardist. Composing and arranging skills will be viewed as assets. The successful candidate will be a strong administrator and a skilled manager of both human and financial resources. S/he will have the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse congregation and community. S/he will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Spanish language ability, while not required, will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will be a person of high personal integrity and ethical standards. S/he will demonstrate the qualities of prayerfulness, determination, and openness, combined with a sense of humor. S/he will have Master s degree or equivalent.
