LINLITHGOW FOLK FESTIVAL 17 YEARs festival diary at a glance wed 9 sept KIND TAE STRANGERS A singing tapestry of Scotland and Flanders, performed by Ewan McVicar and the Linlithgow Community Childrens Choir (the Wee Linties) with special guest, Christine Kydd. Meet Anselm Adornes of Bruges, who became Captain of Linlithgow Palace, his little daughter Euphemie with her houses in the Kirkgate and Mary Queen of Scots and her four Marys. Traditional and remade Scots songs tell about trade, diplomacy, murder and warfare from the 12th to the 20th century. Linlithgow Bowling Club, Philip Avenue EH49 7NH, 7.30 to 9.30pm, with a 15 minute interval. - donations welcome. Refreshments available from the bar. McFroggies Look out for the McFroggies from Linlithgow s twin town of Guyancourt, near Paris! Twinning is open to anyone living in Linlithgow and surrounding areas. Individuals, couples and families are welcome to participate. All that is required is an interest in France and the French way of life. The ability to speak a little French can be useful but is not essential as most French twinners speak some English. THU 10 sept AN EVENING OF POETRY AND SONG With QUILL (West Lothian Poetry Group) and SONGWEAVERS (West Lothian Songwriters Group). These local groups have enjoyed collaborating in recent years and last year s show was described as one of the hidden gems of the Festival. All welcome to sing, play or listen; a great mix of songs and instrumentals. From 8.00pm. THE TONKERERS! - Live in Linlithgow! Fresh from their annual trip to Germany and new CD launch, Falkirk s finest kick off a great weekend of music at the Star & Garter. Tonkerers gigs have a habit of turning into a party. MUSICAL CRUISES WITH LINLITHGOW UNION CANAL SOCIETY (LUCS) Always hugely popular, a cruise on the Union Canal with live music from Cockleroy. BLUES NIGHT WITH BLUE DUBH s A new event this year, featuring Blue Dubh, who have performed all over Scotland and been regular visitors to top music festivals. Their sound occupies foot-tapping territory, somewhere between the Mississippi delta and Chicago, with great vocals, top class harp playing, tasty guitar work and some soulful Sax. Frontman, Sandy Black, (Blackout, Smokehouse Blues Band, Itchy Feet, etc.) is a well known face on the Scottish Blues scene. 8.00pm Linlithgow Bowling Club. 5 on the door. BLUEGRASS CONCERT WITH THE MAIRS FAMILY BAND YEAR Making their debut in Linlithgow, the band features all instruments and all styles from contemporary to traditional, with full bluegrass vocal harmonies, including a gospel repertoire. Vastly experienced on the live music scene, the line-up includes Dad, Alan, one of the founder members of Old Hickory. The band has recently completed a successful tour in the USA and is a big favourite on the Scottish Bluegrass music circuit. Supported by the Dapper McDans, who are making a welcome return with their laid-back acoustic mixture of bluegrass, old time and traditional celtic music. 7.30-10.30pm. Andy is an award-winning singer/songwriter from St Cyrus on the east coast of Scotland, who has been writing and performing for more than 30 years. Andy s songs spring from the stories and characters he has met over the years and they sing of real people and places; of fishermen and scientists, the traditions we lose and the colour of life as it is today. SAT 12 sept HEADLINE CONCERT WITH THE EMILY SMITH BAND Multi award winning singer Emily Smith is a leading figure of the Scottish folk scene. Winner of Scots Singer of the Year 2014 she is recognised not only as a talented songwriter but also as one of the finest interpreters of traditional song in the UK. Her current tour sees Emily showcase songs from her highly acclaimed 2014 album Echoes. Unshakeably Scottish but with farther, wider horizons, Emily s material sees time worn texts weave beautifully alongside contemporary covers, blurring the borders of old and new. Echoes has been hailed as her finest album yet. He has released seventeen albums and has two song books published. Songs like Hawks and Eagles, Some Hae Meat and Roses in December have carried into the folk song mainstream. His songs have been covered by artists worldwide and been sung before Nelson Mandela and Arun Ghandi. His first solo album Flying High, with Fellside Records, Cumbria, won the Music Retailers Association Award in London in 1988 and his latest solo album Singing the River was nominated for the British Country Music Association Awards 2011 in London. He has sung and recorded with the Scottish/Irish band Setanta, with country Gospel singer Jimmy Scott and has recently rekindled his 25 year old singing partnership (on Greentrax Records) with internationally established singer songwriter Ian Bruce. LINLITHGOW FOLK FESTIVAL 17 YEARs Linlithgow Folk Festival Association does far more than its name might suggest. Apart from our annual Festival in September, we arrange concerts, ceilidhs and regular music sessions in local pubs. We have also established the very popular annual Matt McGinn tribute night, which takes place next year on Saturday 5th March 2016. Monthly Session Dates 2015/2016 Black Bitch Tavern, Linlithgow Sessions are normally held in the lounge from 2pm on the third Sunday of the month. In June, the session takes place on the Sunday before the Marches, which is Sunday 12 June in 2016.
