Late work will not be accepted! Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated! All work must be your own. Do not make use of spark notes or any other novel guide. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Sea of Monsters (book 2 of series) by Rick Riordan Essay #1: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Pre-AICE Paper 2, Question 3: Summary Directions: Read the following prompt and write a developed paragraph that makes use of specific details from the novel but be sure to put them in your own words. Write the article in newspaper style giving background information on her trip to Polyphemus island, her rescue of Grover, as well as her return to camp to save Thalia s tree. Use details from the novel, though you can add a few creative

details. Be aware that Clarisse will want to portray herself in the best light possible and that though she may mention Percy and Annabeth, she will probably not give them much credit. Write a typed newspaper article. A newspaper article has short paragraphs (about 2-3 lines so you should have about 10-12 paragraphs) and follows the following format: 1. Recent event (Who? What? Where? When? How?), 2. Background leading up to event, 3. Quotes from sources, and 4. Future event (what will occur next). Also, newspaper articles do not use 1 st person pronouns (I, me, my, we, us) so don t say I interviewed Clarisse and she said. Instead, write When interviewed, Clarisse recalls,. Feel free to read current newspaper articles as a guide. 10th Grade AICE Cambridge 2016 Part I: Read the following novel: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Part II: You will organize and write an essay that conveys your understanding of one of the themes present in Things Fall Apart. The essay is due on the first day of class Prompt: One of the themes of Achebe's novel is the striving after titles, trophies, and status in general. Write an essay commenting on the presence and importance of status symbols in Okonkwo's world and today's world. Explain their appeal and the ways in which searching for status symbols is a negative force in life. Requirements: A completed essay will have all of the following elements: A clear, thoughtful, and well organized thesis (using subordinate clause) that ties to the novel and serves as a foundation for the entire essay Well structured topic sentences (with subordinate clause) that relate to the thesis and provide a focus for each body paragraph Seamlessly integrated quotes from the novel to support your thesis and TSs (five total, at least two per body paragraph) Thoughtful analysis that sheds light on the topic sentences and goes beyond a surface understanding of the theme.
