Thorens The Phono Company History (1 / 4) 1883 Hermann Thorens founded the company in St. Croix, Switzerland, as a music box manufacturer 1889 Thorens produces the first cylinder phonograph 1906 Introduction on the market of the first horn gramophone for lateral-cut discs 1928 Release of the first electric motor drive 1940 Start of building an own professional record-cutting machine 1957 The TD 124 establishes worldwide quality standards of record players 5
Thorens The Phono Company History (2 / 4) 1966 Thorens moved production of the TD 150 record player to Germany. The TD 150 ii followed in 1969 1972 Development of the TD 160 which writes history. In 1975, the 500.000th record player is built. 1976 The TD 126 replaces the TD 125 ii and catapults Thorens into the era of electronically powered belt transmissions. 1983 The company celebrates its centennial, offering absolute fans the luxurious Prestige record player 1889 The TD 2001: high-end turntable with solid wood casing and complex reinforcements is released 1998 Thorens launches the ambiance with an external power pack and solid cherry wood frame. 6
Thorens The Phono Company History (3 / 4) 2000 - now Thorens is once again run from Switzerland The new CEO Heinz Rohrer brings to the market: the 2010 awarded TD 309 and the TD 350, TD 550, etc. as well as the new Thorens high-end electronics series including the TEM 3200 and the TEP 302 and 3800 2008: Thorens 125th Anniversary (oldest consumer electronics manufacturer of the world) 2010: Introduction of the TD 309 which sets new standards in analogue replay. The turntable s innovative three-point-suspension (Tri-Balance) ensures Perfect balance in both mechanical and aesthetic terms. 7
