Program Notes The Shell Adagio, Op. 17 NIMROD BORENSTEIN (b. 1969) The Shell Adagio was given its world premiere by the Oxford Philomusica conducted by Marios Papadopoulos on February 28, 2004. The new work received exceptionally enthusiastic reviews from the press. The Oxford times described the piece as: "Beautifully melodic and extremely approachable It could easily become one of the staples of the modern or orchestral string repertoire like the Barber Adagio." The Shell Adagio is a lyrical and melancholic piece. From its sunrise like introduction to its quiet sunset departure, it is like a chronicle of a past life, sometimes light and optimistic or dark and inescapable. (Boosey & Hawkes) Laudate Coeli Dominum JOHANN ADOLF HASSE (1699-1783) Johann Adolf Hasse was an 18th-century German composer, singer and teacher of music. Immensely popular in his time, Hasse was best known for his prolific operatic output, though he also composed a considerable quantity of sacred music. This edition of his Laudate Coeli Dominum is based on a handcopied score by an unknown copyist and edited by Martin Banner. Text and Translations Sing Creations Music On / Stephen Paulus Sing creations music on! Natures glee is in every mood and tone. Eternity. Natures universal tongue singeth here, songs I've heard and felt and seen, everywhere. Songs like the grass are evergreen, everywhere. The giver said live and be, and they have been forever. Sing creations music on! Will There Really Be a Morning? / Craig Hella Johnson Will there really be a morning? Is there such a thing as day? Could I see it from the mountains, if I were as tall as they? Where does morning lie? Has it feet like water lilies?

Has it feathers like a bird? Is it brought from famous countries, of which I have never heard? Where does morning lie? Oh some scholar, oh some sailor, oh some wisemen from the sky. Please do tell a little pilgrim, where the place called morning lies. - Emily Dickinson Túrót ëszik a cigány / Zoltán Kodály Túrót ëszik a cigány, duba, Veszekëdik azután, lëba, Még azt mondja pofon vág, duba, Vágja biz a nagyapját, lëba. Csipkefa bimbója, Kihajlott az útra, Rida, rida, bom, bom, bom. Kihajlott az útra. Arra mënt Jánoska, szakajt ëgygyet róla. The gypsy is eating cottage cheese, duba. He's arguing with me, leba, He says he is going to smack me. "The day after tomorrow!" I said, leba. The buds of the rosehip bush are hanging over the road. Johnny saw it and tore one off, he is already running around with it. The gypsy is eating... i am a little church / Daniel Brewbaker i am a little church (no great cathedral) far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities -i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest, i am not sorry when sun and rain make april my life is the life of the reaper and the sower; my prayers are prayers of earth's own clumsily striving (finding and losing and laughing and crying) children whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness around me surges a miracle of unceasing birth and glory and death and resurrection: over my sleeping self float flaming symbols of hope, and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains

i am a little church (far from the frantic world with its rapture and anguish) at peace with nature -i do not worry if longer nights grow longest; i am not sorry when silence becomes singing winter by spring, i lift my diminutive spire to merciful Him Whose only now is forever: standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence (welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness) - e.e. cummings Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit / arr. Rollo Dilworth Ev'ry time I feel the spirit, movin' in my heart, I will pray. Upon the mountain, where my Lord spoke, out of His mouth came fire and smoke. And all around me, all looked so fine, I asked the Lord if all was mine. Ev'ry time I feel the spirit, movin' in my heart, I will pray. The Jordan river is chilly and cold, it chills the body, not the soul. There ain't but one train that runs this track, runs up to heav'n and right back. Ev'ry time I feel the spirit, movin' in my heart, I will pray, yes, I will pray. Sail Away / Malcolm Dalglish Dark clouds hide the sun, rain comes down and the river runs. Rivers run down to the sea, and when you've got your liberty. Don't you want to sail away? Sail away ladies, sail on. It's time to go, you built a boat, the wind will blow behind you. Sail away ladies, sail away.

Laudate Coeli Dominum / Johann Adolf Hasse Laudate coeli, laudate Dominum, Alleluja, alleluja. Excelsus super omnes gentes est Dominus, alleluja. Et super coelos gloria ejus, alleluja. Notum fecit salutare suum, in conspectu gentium. Praise the Lord from the heavens, Alleluja, alleluja. The Lord is exalted above all people, alleluja. The Lord has made known, his salvation.
