CSI: ill Citation Source Investigation Presented by: Sarah B. Shank April 27 th, 2016 RRLC
Goals for this session Learn of one or two new resources to help you solve your ILL mysteries Think about different approaches to investigating requests Have some hands on experience with CSI:ILL
Setting the scene SECTION I: Forensic Bibliographic Reconstruction Cold Case Story Why so many mysterious requests?/what types of requests require deeper investigation? Investigation Tools Searching Strategies What are your favorite tools/research Strategies? SECTION II: Practical Application
Forensic bibliographic reconstruction Coined by Tara Patterson (a friend of the Ubiquitous Librarian), For other items, however, it can feel more like being a forensic scientist, or an archaeologist attempting to reconstruct an artifact from its broken shards. Read More at: Forensic Bibliographic Reconstruction: tracking down troublesome citations and the problem of lost knowledge Also inspired by a workshop presented by Collette Mak & Tina Baich a couple of years ago called, Extreme Bibliographic Searching
Interlibrary Loan Request Form Cold Case story Who: A professor in the music department What: An article written by the professor in Ex Tempore Where: Cited in RILM Music Database When: 2014/2015 and 1 month ago Cited in: EBSCO: RILM Article Information Journal Title: Ex tempore : analytical and theoretical papers from the Department of Music, the University of California at San Diego. so many CSI requests!? Increased access to the internet and information posted on the web Increased automation in workflows; software, leaves more difficult requests behind Patrons provide incomplete information; may not even understand what they are asking for New for me: Discovery layer imports unexpected or incomplete information Citations are an ILL practitioner s DNA so to speak. With more complete evidence, we have greater proof of a request s existence.
Cause for investigation Missing information Takes longer than 5 minutes Foreign Language materials Older Material Lack of Available Lenders Conference Proceedings What Type of requests require extra searching for you?

Searching strategies
All in the details Citation cases come in all different shapes and sizes After a while you can lump similar citation cases together and apply similar strategies Identify what you know & what you need to know. Develop a searching strategy Employ MARC Have some go-to resources Have a searching buddy
Examine ALL angles Sometimes things look a little different from behind, or above, or below. Search Author instead of Title Search for page numbers and Author instead of Title Try going to the publisher s site Try another computer (Google is SO great that it tailors its search to you) Take a break; come back to it later Widen or Narrow your perspective; Try to answer a different question Talk it out with a colleague
Strategies: Specific Types of Resources Conference Proceedings: Try going to the organization website, Addproceedings/conference etc. to the search terms. E-Pub Documents Check publisher s website; many articles funded by grants are freely available Dissertations: Try searching by author to see what else they have written May be books or articles written from or taken from the research Search granting institution Foreign Language Materials: Search for Journal Title instead of article title Use Google Chrome to help translate webpages when needed
What are some of your favorite tools &/or searching Strategies?
Let S investigate! Break into Groups of 3 or 4 Each Group will Receive a number Take a couple of minutes to name your Investigative Unit. Go to Sarah s Resource site: https://sites.google.com/site/stumpjumpresources/examples Click on your group number and try searching through the examples Someone should take notes on what you do We ll report back on what we find in the last 15 minutes.
Mystery Solved? Maybe, Maybe not. What can we take away from all this searching? Collette Mak said, It s free to search Satisfaction or opportunity to provide different types of service Possibility of learning about new resources/skillsets Building strategies for the future Share what you learn with others Share what you did find with the user; they may be equally as happy
