LEADERS SURVIVAL COURSE IN SPANISH Welcome to HF Holidays Survival Course in Spanish. The course has been constructed to allow even the complete beginner to pick up sufficient language to be able to communicate effectively. This course also forms the syllabus of the oral language element of the Abroad Assessment. This course does not seek to replace evening classes or commercially produced language courses, both of which will broaden and enhance Leaders understanding of the Spanish language. Nor does it deal with situations where Leaders can reasonably expect to find personnel who can speak English, e.g. at airline desks, in the hotel, at major cable car stations, or at the tourist office. It does concentrate on real situations in which Leaders will find it useful to be able to communicate in Spanish and which they are likely to encounter in Spain. We gratefully acknowledge the help of two HF Holidays Leaders, Jenny Holliman and Elizabeth Widdowson, who took the time and trouble to assist in the production of this language course. We are especially indebted to two other HF Holidays Leaders: Brian Park, whose expertise has resulted in the production of this course in Spanish, and Dick Brader, whose initial enthusiasm and hard work has led to the realisation of the project as a whole. Methodology Dialogues are numbered and correspondingly numbered recordings will be available to help with pronunciation. Leaders are recommended to concentrate on the spoken word in the early stages, coming only later to the written Spanish dialogues. Suggested procedures 1. Look at the English meaning (cover up the Spanish dialogue with a ruler or a piece of paper at this stage). 2. Listen to the Spanish dialogue. 3. Repeat the Spanish dialogue aloud, imitating what you heard a number of times. 4. When you are confident about the pronunciation, study the written Spanish dialogue. (No attempt has been made to use phonetics or to produce an Anglicised spelling of the Spanish dialogues. In time Leaders may like to develop their own individual spelling scheme to remind them of the pronunciation. However, initially it may perhaps be more useful to concentrate on listening to, and then repeating, the dialogues. Space has been left in the text for you to add your phonetics.)
