2 Edir s Note Jean Baptiste Lully (16321687) was a leading musician in France during the Baroque era and the ounder o French opera. Born in Florence, Italy, Lully was taken Paris early in his lie where his musical talents re soon developed, and where he became a successul coos danc and violinist. Because o his exceptional musical ability and tremens ambition, Lully became quite porul in the musical venues o Paris, coo music or ballets and theatrical productions as ll as conducting orchestras and choral presentations. He eventually coosed and conducted in the court o Louis XIV. Lully coosed a number o works or the musical theat although he also wrote motets and secular vocal pieces. He became especially amous or his work in operas, in which he replaced the Italian recitativo secco with recitatives that had accoaniments and proper text accentuations. He also established the French overture with three contrasting slowastslow movements and wrote ballets incorporating quicker dances. ns is ound in the opening portion o Armide, a serious opera known as a tragédie en musique. The original French words are by his longtime collaborar, the playwright Philippe Quinault, who er with Lully invented new orm o opera, based on colicated tales rom ancient or Renaissance authors and incorporating music and dancing in large scale theatrical productions. Revered in the eighteenth century as a masterpiece, Armide was irst perormed in 1686 at the Paris péra. This highly successul production was Lully s last tragédie en musique, or he died a year later. ns is perormed by the chorus and orchestra at the end o the prologue, as a uniying theme o praise the hero, with the cusmary reerence the King and Lully s patron, Louis XIV. The sonorous chorus exles the glory o the king with these words: ns la ceur de loix. ns glorieux ex (Sing the setness o his laws. Sing his glorious ex) This chorus was originally set or S.A.T.B. voices with an instrumental accoaniment o strings and continuo in the key o C major. This arrangement or S.S.A. voices with piano is based on the irst edition published by Chrisphe Ballard in Paris in 1686. English words, the eightmeasure introduction, optional parts or tes and hand drum, and teo and dynamic indications have been added shortened version o the original score. Although a perormance o piece would be acceptable with the accoaniment provided here, the use o additional instruments, such as strings, would also be quite eective or the enhancement or support o the vocal parts. This work should be perormed very lightly and rhythmically with an ehasis on the irst beat o each measure. Additionally, perormers should ehasize the normally stressed syllables o the French words, which are underlined in the ollowing pronunciation guide.
