CONDUCTORS James Stegall, Professor of Music, was named The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer at Western Illinois University in 2013. In addition to his role as Director of Choral Activities, he conducts the Western Illinois University Singers, Madrigal Singers and teaches graduate and undergraduate choral conducting and literature. He has also served on WIU President Jack Thomas Faculty Roundtable. Through juried application, his University Singers have achieved significant recognition through state, regional and national convention performances including the Illinois Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association. They have appeared on professional venues with the Dallas Brass, Kansas City Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Phoenix Symphony and University of Colorado Symphony. Dr. Stegall has presented for national and international conferences including the College Music Society, The International Conference on Arts and Humanities, The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium, the National Association for Music Education, the National American Choral Directors Association and the International Symposium on Singing and Song. He recently spoke at the Inaugural President Institute s TEDxWesternIllinoisUniversity and presented sessions for The Center for Innovation and Research. Dr. Stegall will be retiring in June and join his wife, Erin, a Choral Director in Schaumburg, IL and his son, Evan, a conference champion backstroker for the Fremd High School Vikings. Jason Hawkins is in his first year as Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at Western Illinois University where he teaches Concert Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Music Education courses, and Aural Skills. He earned a B.A. in both Choral Music Education and Trumpet Performance from Western Illinois University, a M.A. in Education from Governors State University, and served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Illinois while pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Education. Mr. Hawkins returns to WIU following twelve years as Director of Choirs at Plainfield North High School in the Chicago suburbs where his choirs earned numerous accolades at the community, state, and national levels. He has been honored many times by the Plainfield Schools including selection as the 2016 Teacher of the Year. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Lewis University. Mr. Hawkins makes frequent appearances as clinician/conductor for ILMEA, IHSA, IGSMA, and regional choral festivals, including the 2015 ILMEA District 1 Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and has gained a strong reputation throughout the state. His research interests include the use of technology for assessment and instruction in the choral classroom, which led to a presentation at the International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education (2015) and subsequent publication (2016). He has also presented at the Illinois Music Educators Conference (2014) and has been a guest lecturer at numerous regional universities. Mr. Hawkins resides in Macomb with his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful daughters, Hannah and Olivia.
