OPEN YOUR IMAGINATION AND STEP INTO A STORYBOOK! Welcome to Towers and Tales, the Lismore Story Festival, now in its third year. We are proud to bring an incredible new line-up of Irish and international authors and illustrators to inspire readers of all ages. And we re really excited to continue our special schools programme this year. Our dream is to give young audiences unforgettable, creative and transformational experiences with books, reading, storytelling and drawing that will stay with them for years to come. Come along there will be stories for babies, glow-in-the-dark and teddy-bear doodles, teen poetry slams and family sketch crawls. Create a masterpiece at the Inspiration Station, a poem at the Poetry Corner or swap a book at the Book Emporium. Soak up the atmosphere as stories take over the town, pop along to the many free events, create a character on The Big Picture Wall, get a book prescription from the Children s Books Ireland Book Doctors and don t forget to say hello to the Pilgrims, Princesses and Beardy Old Men in our very special illustration exhibition by PJ Lynch. FESTIVAL HUB - FREE EVENTS & FESTIVAL ATMOSPHERE ALL DAY - Saturday 29th April THE BOOK EMPORIUM with Waterford County Libraries & Eason BOOK SWAP Bring a book (make sure it s in good condition) to swap with other festivalgoers in the mobile library. The library team will be on hand to facilitate and will be offering free library membership all day. BOOK BUYING Eason Dungarvan will have a well-stocked book stall full of old favourites, latest releases and copies of books by all our festival artists. Signings will take place after author and illustrator events unless otherwise stated. TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY THE INSPIRATION STATION Write and draw your own stories with help from our facilitators and some special guests. Led by members of the Lismore Castle Arts team, the Inspiration Station will be a hub of creativity with free notebooks and pencils courtesy of Eason Dungarvan. TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY
THE BIG PICTURE with appearances by PJ Lynch and guests PJ Lynch and festival friends will all be found at the big picture drawing station over the course of the day. Get drawing, doodling and scribbling on a big festival wall that will grow in beauty and size as we all get involved. VENUE: LISMORE CASTLE AVENUE TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY CHILDVISION CAMP with Childvision Ireland Come join the Childvision team and learn a new way of experiencing the world. Take part in fun games where you can crack the code using Braille, complete puzzles while in the total darkness of a blindfold and enjoy sensory stories that will ignite your imagination. TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY POETRY CORNER with Poetry Ireland Join Poetry Ireland at the Festival s first poetry corner and immerse yourself in rhyme all day in the company of some of Ireland s finest poets. Ticketed events at poetry corner can be booked on-line but don t be afraid to drop in at any time to enjoy art projects created by Paula McGloin, illustrator of All Through the Night. COMIC BOOK-MAKING WORKSHOP with The Lewis Glucksman Gallery A day in the life...of an Artist! Led by experienced art facilitators, this family workshop invites participants to create their own comic book story as they track a day in the life of an artist. Try your hand at different art-making techniques, from collage and printmaking to illustration and paper-weaving. TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY PILGRIMS, PRINCESSES & BEARDY OLD MEN Exhibition of works by PJ Lynch Towers and Tales presents an exhibition of original illustrations by award-winning Irish artist, illustrator and author PJ Lynch. There will also be an opportunity to create your own masterpiece. Three works created on the day will win a special Towers and Tales prize! VENUE: SUMMERHOUSE CAFE, LISMORE TOWN TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY KNOCK FOR A STORY The most intimate event of the festival! Only 6 people at a time enter in to the front porch of the castle and enjoy readings throughout the day given by a selection of festival artists & team members. TIME: 11AM- 5PM. AGE: FAMILY
THE BOOK CLINIC with Children s Books Ireland and the Towers and Tales Young Committee THE CHILDREN S BOOKS IRELAND BOOK DOCTORS Are you a young reader? Looking for a new series to delve into? Pop along to the CBI Book Doctors. Every child will get a book prescription from the Doctors and a copy of the Inis Reading Guide to the best books of the year. THE GREAT BOOK MAKEOVER Do you have an old book that needs a new mission in life? The book makeover team will help you transform your book into beautiful decorations for your home. TIME: 12NOON - 4PM. AGE: FAMILY THE INTERNATIONAL SECRET EXPLORERS SOCIETY (WATERFORD CHAPTER) Adventures in exploration: A case study with Waterford Youth Arts & Waterford City & County Library Services Adventures! Explorations! Weird Creatures! Swashbuckling heroes! And a rabbit called Aiden! Come and enjoy a series of stories and performances created for Towers and Tales. OPENING EVENTS - Friday 28th April LAUREATES IN CONVERSATION with PJ Lynch & Michael Morpurgo, Chaired by Elaina Ryan Renowned illustrator and author PJ Lynch is Ireland s current Laureate na nóg and the creator, with Ryan Tubridy, of Patrick and the President. Michael Morpurgo is a former UK Children s Laureate (2003 2005) and author of War Horse, Private Peaceful and many other award-winning books for children. Join these two extraordinary artists in conversation with Children Books Ireland s Elaina Ryan for a very special discussion of their careers, their achievements and, most importantly, the stories they have created. You and your little ones can listen to Yasmeen s favourite stories and get creative with a treasure trove of toddler-friendly art materials. PJ will demonstrate his technique of working with charcoal and chalk, and participants will create their own illustration with hands-on help from PJ himself. CHARACTER CREATIONS with Niamh Sharkey Get some top design and illustration tips to create your own funky character at this handson illustration workshop from illustrator and picture-book maker Niamh Sharkey. MICHAEL MORPURGO Master storyteller Michael Morpurgo visits the Towers and Tales Festival to speak about Listen to the Moon, his novel inspired by the sinking of the Lusitania. Fans of all ages will have a chance to hear about Michael s life as a writer and where his inspiration comes from at this special event. MY FAVOURITE POEM with Tony Curtis, in association with Poetry Ireland Children are invited to the poetry tent; for a chance to read their favourite poem on stage alongside poet and musician Tony Curtis. Tony will also read poems from his books An Elephant Called Rex and A Dog Called Dumbo and Pony, tell stories and talk about how he makes his poems. COME TOGETHER: WE COME APART with Brian Conaghan & Sarah Crossan. Chaired by Elaina Ryan. Do you think you could write a novel over WhatsApp? Young Adult stars Sarah Crossan and Brian Conaghan did just that. Come and hear about the origins of their collaborative verse novel, We Come Apart, a powerful, modernday Romeo and Juliet. VENUE: LISMORE HERITAGE CENTRE TIME: 4PM AGE: 12+ YRS TICKETS: 5 SCHOOLS OUTREACH PROGRAMME Meeting an author in person is the perfect way to encourage young minds to explore the world of books. To make sure everyone has the chance to experience Towers and Tales we have designed an Outreach programme, which takes our authors into schools and venues across the region on the 28th of April. We will also be introducing Bookbag to our outreach programme, a children s book gifting initiative, that aims to get books into the hands of children through primary schools in Ireland. The project was established by picturebook maker Niamh Sharkey and the festivals Bookbag project has been supported by Children s Books Ireland, Waterford Area Partnership and a number of our partners.
