The Number Devil: A Mathematical Adventure -By Hans Magnus Enzensberger 2 nd 9 wks Honors Math Journal Project Mrs. C. Thompson's Math Class DUE: Tuesday, December 12, 2017 1. First, you need to create your Number Devil Journal. The front cover of the book will be decorated with the book title, author and whatever creative illustrations you choose. Your name will be placed on the back cover of the book along with your class period. 2. Once you have created your pages in the journal label each page with the night that you are reading. 3. Every activity needs to be completed in your journal. Label each activity with the activity name. Be sure to write out your complete thoughts. Chapter in the Book The First Night The Second Night The Third Night Project Description (Activity Name in BOLD) Gum Challenge Explain in Your own words the gum example Zero Challenge How important is zero? Explain why zero is a hero List synonyms for zero Try to go all day without saying zero or any of its synonyms Prima Donnas On pages 62-63, The Number Devil states that any even number larger than two can be created by adding two prima donnas together. On page 64, it states that any number larger than five can be created by adding three prima donnas together. Use the sheet provided in class to Addendum/ Due Dates Due 10/27/17 Due 11/02/17 Due 11/02/17
The Fourth Night The Fifth Night Show that it works for the problems given. Square Root Clock (construct a square root clock in your Number Devil Journal) **Pi (Why is Pi an irrational number? Come up with a way to remember Pi (at least the first 3 or so digits) and explain it in your Number Devil Journal (if it s a song, poem, or rap, write the lyrics). Recipe: Coconuts Robert needs your help! He is having a beach party for his friends and needs to make a coconut recipe to stay with the beach theme. Find a delicious coconut recipe and then multiply it to make enough for all of his friends. Robert is having 15 total people at his party (including himself and the number devil of course). Due 11/09/17 **Pi is a bonus assignment that can be done for extra points Due 11/09/17 The Sixth Night Write the recipe with the correct amount of ingredients in your Number Devil Journal. Fibbonocci Sequence Fibonacci Sequence in Nature Hunt Go hunting for the Fibonacci sequence in nature. Petals on a flower are often a number in the Fibonacci sequence. The branches of a tree or plant sometimes divide following the Fibonacci sequence. Due 11/16/17
Now, grab a camera, a magazine or google on the internet! Snap a picture, cut a picture out of a magazine OR book with permission, OR print a picture off the internet of an example of the sequence in nature and glue it in your journal. The Seventh Night The Eighth Night Be sure to describe how it relates to the Fibbonacci Sequence Paschals Triangle Draw Paschals Triangle on P134 Fill in one more row, how did you know that your number sequence was correct? Explain. Factorials Count the number of seats in your classroom. Arrange the classroom seats. How many different arrangements are there for the students if there are seats in the class. Due 11/16/17 Due 11/30/17 Complete a factorial and explain how you got that answer in you Number Devil Journal. A new student has arrived and the teacher needs to find a seat for them. What would you do? The Ninth Night Least Common Denominator Why is it necessary? Explain how to add/subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators Due 11/30/17
The Tenth Night Quang like a clayton create your own. What is a quang? Who knows? It's from the number devil's own imagination. Invent your own measurement. Using a strip of paper make markings equally along the edge to show how long your measurement is (similar to what a ruler looks like). What are you going to call it? How does it compare to a standard measurement such as an inch or a millimeter (i.e., is it about 2 1/2 inches or 22 millimeters?). Due 12/07/17 The Eleventh Night The Twelfth Night Add your new measurement ruler and add i your Number Devil Journal with the name of your measurement and how it compares to standard measurement. Proofs The number devil talks about mathematical proofs. What is a mathematical proof? Can you explain it in a different way than the number devil? Write your explanation of a mathematical proof in your Number Devil Journal. Explain in Your Own Words The Devil s Real Name Who do you think is the most important mathematician and why? How did Robert s necklace help him solve the problem? Due 12/07/17 Due 12/12/17
