M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S Main Attractions What films will play? This section lists some of the main films we ll play in the next few months. Additional unlisted films may also be screened. Visit our website for the latest info on what films are upcoming. When will films play? We determine each Monday what main films will play starting on Friday. On Tuesday, we set the upcoming week s schedule and then update our website and our telephone hotline. We ll also send you a weekly email, if you sign up at our website. (Sometimes we book films more than a week ahead of time, which we post in the Coming Attractions section of our website; however, those bookings are tentative and subject to change.) AmblerTheater.org (215) 345-7855 Win Win USA - Tom McCarthy 1 hr 46 min A struggling attorney, played by Paul Giamatti, takes on the guardianship of an elderly client in a desperate attempt to keep his practice afloat in this funny and authentic drama. Director Tom McCarthy has shown a skilled touch with minor-key character-based comedy/ dramas (The Station Agent and The Visitor). Jane Eyre UK Cary Fukunaga -1 hr 55 min Based on the Charlotte Bronte novel, this new film brings a contemporary immediacy to the 19th century romantic drama. An orphan, who works as a governess in an isolated mansion for a cold and aloof master, must come to terms with her future and a terrible secret. Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender star in this classic. Of Gods and Men France/ Algeria Xavier Beauvois 2 hr 2 min w/subtitles This spellbinding drama tells the story of eight French Christian monks in a remote monastery in Algeria in the 1990s. After a crew of foreign workers is massacred by Islamic fundamentalists, the monks decide that they must stay. It s a tale of bravery, tolerance and self-sacrifice, made all the more powerful by an understated lyricism and the naturalistic performances of the cast. Biutiful Spain Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu 2 hr 27 min w/subtitles Marked by a powerful performance from Javier Bardem, this gritty, slow-burning melodrama follows the struggles of a man trying to reconcile the competing parts of this life - fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, and mortality. Set in the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona, BIUTIFIL is an impressively directed and superbly written emotional drama. And although it s more linear than director Inarritu s previous films (Amores Perros; 21 Grams; Babel), its worldview is every bit as stark. In a Better World Denmark Susanne Bier 1 hr 59 min w/subtitles IN A BETTER WORLD is about a doctor who commutes between his home in Denmark and his work at a refugee camp in Africa. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. It s a powerful and complex drama that explores schoolyard problems at home and escalating tribal violence abroad.

M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S The Company Men USA - John Wells 1 hr 55 min When corporate downsizing leaves three co-workers jobless, they are forced to redefine their lives as men, husbands, and fathers. This direct and unsentimental drama grapples with the underside of an increasingly common American experience. Starring Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, and Maria Bello. Beginners USA Mike Mills 1 hr 44 min BEGINNERS is about a man who learns that his elderly father is gay. This creative film features a smart screenplay and captivating performances. Director Mills breaks from conventional story structure to present a surprising and moving drama. Starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer. Rabbit Hole USA John Cameron Mitchell 1 hr 31 min RABBIT HOLE stars Aaron Eckhart and Nicole Kidman as a husband and wife who fight to save their marriage after the loss of a child. The film is a vivid, honest and unexpectedly funny portrait of a family searching for connections and meaning. Refreshingly positive without ever undercutting the tragedy, this well acted film is special. Inspector Bellamy France Claude Chabrol - 1 hr 50 min w/subtitles Two of the giants of French cinema, Claude Chabrol and Gerard Depardieu, teamed up for this wry thriller about a police commissioner trying to balance professional instinct with family duty. Yes, it s a mystery, but it s also a comedy in its understated and bemused approach. This was the fiftieth and final film of master director Chabrol, who died shortly after completing it. Blue Valentine USA Derek Cianfrance 1 hr 54 min Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star in this emotionally-raw indie film about the beguiling beginning and dismaying deterioration of a young couple s relationship. It s an intense film that focuses on the actors penetrating performances, which are relentlessly compelling, honest and direct. Limited Engagements We try to play each of our Main Attractions films for a full multi-week run. Sometimes, however, we are unable to play a film in a timely or complete way. And then it becomes a question of either squeezing it in or not playing it at all. When that happens, we often schedule a film for a couple of mid-week screenings, called Limited Engagements. Make sure that you sign up for our weekly email blast, so that you don t miss these short, last-chance screenings. A M B L E R T H E A T E R. O R G 2 1 5 3 4 5 7 8 5 5

Getting from A to B : Movies that Move The ten movies in this series examine getting from one place to another: by boat, by train, by truck, or however. Spanning decades, nationalities and genres, they show how a film s journey is intertwined with its storytelling and how audiences are drawn in for the ride. Whether by boat (The African Queen), by truck (The Wages of Fear), or simply by foot (Run Lola Run), these movies move from point A to point B no matter the obstacle. But after 18 months of searching, finding herself no closer to a successful career than when she began and stuck in a dead end job at a local copy shop, she attempts to jump start her career and get her life started. Followed by a Q&A with writer/ director Michael Licisyn. 35mm or HD Digital? Yes, we are 35mm purists and we show classic movies in the original 35mm film format, if we can. However, sometimes films are not available in 35mm or the prints are in terrible shape with scratches, bad color and unacceptable sound. What then? Fortunately, great strides have been made in digital technology and sometimes the quality of a movie in HD Digital is comparable to 35mm or even better. That makes HD Digital a viable option. Not all classic films are currently available in HD Digital, though, so this is still only a limited alternative. So, here s the bottom line: we ll bring you classic movies in the best possible format. Our default choice is 35mm film, but if the HD Digital format is better, then we ll go with digital. We list the chosen format in the credits above and on our website, so you ll know which format we ll be screening. (One caveat, though: if a print is booked and listed in 35mm and it arrives in terrible shape, we ll jump to digital if we can. So, check our website before you come to the theater to get any late breaking news on the final presentation format.)
