SHORT SYNOPSIS Love is All takes us on a journey through the twentieth century, exploring love and courtship on screen in a century of unprecedented social upheaval. From the very first kisses ever caught on film, through the disruption of war, to the birth of youth culture, gay liberation and free love, we follow courting couples flirting at tea dances, kissing in the back of the movies, shacking up and fighting for the right to love. This is the celluloid story of love and courtship since the birth of the movie camera; told with spellbinding footage from the British Film Institute archive and Yorkshire Film Archive and many more! Love is All is directed by Kim Longinotto, edited by Ollie Huddleston and set to a stunning Richard Hawley soundtrack.
DIRECTOR S STATEMENT Love is All is a celebration of the changes in our lives in the UK from 1898 to 2014. The film really broadens the idea of love, by looking at our changes in attitudes to subjects such as multiculturalism and same sex relationships. The film explores love in a playful way though; you can t have an angry film with a Richard Hawley soundtrack. DIRECTOR S BIOGRAPHY Kim Longinotto is a British documentary film maker, well known for making films about extraordinary women and also the plight of female victims of oppression or discrimination. Longinotto studied camera and directing at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, England, where she now tutors occasionally. At the age of 10 she was sent to a draconian all-girls boarding school, where she found it hard to make friends due to the mistress forbidding anyone to talk to her for a term after she became lost during a school trip. After a period of homelessness Longinotto went on to Essex University to study English and European literature and later followed friend and future filmmaker Nick Broomfield to the National Film and Television School. While studying, she made a documentary about her boarding school that was shown at the London Film Festival, and has continued to be a prolific observational documentary film maker ever since. She has received a number of awards for her films over the years, including a BAFTA for her documentary Pink Saris.
The Project Love is All is part of a series of Music Archive films produced by Crossover with coproducers around the world. The first Crossover Music-Archive film was From the Sea to the Land Beyond, a love letter to the British Coast made from the BFI archive, directed by Penny Woolcock with a soundtrack by British Sea Power. It was funded by the BBC and the Arts Council through The Space and premiered at Sheffield DocFest and screened on the BBC. The BFI also released it on DVD. The next film, The Big Melt celebrated a century of the steel industry, a hymn to Britain's industrial past with soundtrack from Jarvis Cocker and guests, directed by Martin Wallace, again in premiered at the Sheffield Docfest, screened on the BBC and released on DVD by the BFI. The third film in the Music archive series was Girt By Sea, a film about life on the Australian Coast with a soundtrack from The Panics, directed by Shane McNeil using archive from the NFSA - in partnership with the ABC, Screen West, Perth Festival of the Arts and Screen Australia. Then came Velorama - 100 years of cycling and the bicycle - made for the Tour De France Grand Depart through Yorkshire - directed by Daisy Asquith, soundtrack by Bill Nelson using the BFI archive and Yorkshire Film Archive. Then came From Scotland With Love, directed by Virginia Heath with soundtrack from King Creosote made in partnership with BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland for the Commonwealth Games. Love is All, is a stand out film in the series, directed by Kim Longinotto with a soundtrack by Richard Hawley, the film captures a century of Love & Courtship on screen and was made in partnership with the BBC and the BFI and had a stunning premier at Sheffield DocFest on the grounds of Chatsworth House.
