How to use OPAC The OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog)is the online bibliography of Kobe University Library collection. Let s use OPAC together! I m looking for library materials for an assignment, but how can I find out them? I see! Information Literacy Section, Kobe University Library literacy@lib.kobe-u.ac.jp Let s try searching for them by using OPAC!
1.Simple Search https://lib.kobe-u.ac.jp/ Go to English Website! https://lib.kobe-u.ac.jp/en/ There is OPAC search box on the website of Kobe Univ. Library. Enter keywords in this box and click Search! All library materials can be searched. It doesn t mean only books and journals, but also newspapers, DVDs, e-journals, e-books and so on!
3. Keyword search The phrase environmental issues and modern society gets no hit... what should I do? Let s search by selected keywords! Please type fewer words into a search box! Point! First, decide the most important keyword. (e.g. environment) Then please add, change or decrease other words. e.g.) environment society, environment modern Is it possible to search by other factors? (author, subjects, language ) In such case, Advanced Search is useful!
4.Advanced Search Logical Operator (AND OR NOT) Search Field Sorting Document Type Campus Search Option Year Published Country Language Subject Media Type (CD DVD ) So feature-rich!
5. Select Search Field Can materials which include specific words be searched? Select [Any (Keyword)]! This book includes both 2 words in title (or other fields)! In order to find books entitled "environment", I selected [Any (Keyword)] and searched "environment". Then, the word gets too much hits Select [Full title]! Decreased considerably! How can I get books written by Rachel L. Carson? Select [Author]! Books written by Rachel L. Carson!
6. Logical Operator(AND OR NOT) Logical Operator (AND OR NOT) can be used. AND search OR search NOT search A B A B A B A and B A or B A not B AND search (contain both A and B) e.g.) environment [and] economics material that include both words are gotten. (Books titled Environmental economics, The economics of the environment ) OR search (contain any of A and B) e.g.) environment [or] economics material that include at least one of these words are gotten. (Books titled Environmental issues, Introductory economics textbook ) NOT 検索 (contain A, not contain B) e.g.) environment [not] economics material that include the first word are gotten, but material that include second word are excluded. ( Environmental issues are gotten, but Introductory economics textbook are excluded.)
7. Check Material Details Click the title of material you have been searched! Holding information Holding information shows where the books are held.
8. Book Details Book Details It is the detail of material. (e.g. publisher, year published, size, language) Click Blue letter and search related materials! Search by author! Search by subjects!
9. Holding Information Holding Information Link to floor maps Location Which library and which floor the book is in? Call No. Where the book is arranged? Status Could the book be used now? Check Status and make a note of Location, Call No., then go to the book shelf!
10. Call Number Call Number (Call No.) A call number represents material's subject. It is placed on the spine of the book, and books are arranged on the shelves in call number order. e.g.) 519 500 =Technology. Engineering 510 = Construction. Civil engineering 519 =Pollution. Environmental engineering Library materials are arranged on the shelves in call number order, so that books on similar subjects are grouped together. Remember the number of your speciality!
11. Reservation & Campus Delivery Reservation Library materials can be reserved when they are on loan. Campus Delivery Library materials can be delivered to every campus library you selected when they are not on loan. *Please Log on by login ID and its password. *These services are provided free of charge. An email informs me that the book arrives, so that it can be borrowed at once! The book can be borrowed at my nearby library! Click here!
12. How to increase search results The phrase acid rain japan gets few hit... what should I do? Point1 Decide the most important keywords! e.g.) acid rain Search again! Point2 Use hypernym or hyponym! e.g.) pollution japan (pollution acid rain ) Search again! Point3 Use related word or synonym! e.g.) Air pollution Search again! Are there no materials of which the subject is acid rain in japan? Search Other Universities (CiNii Books) if Kobe Univ. library has few materials.
13. Search other universities (CiNii Books) Click here! Material Kobe Univ. Library doesn t own can be searched! Click Other Universities and search more materials! CiNii Books This database enables us to search information of books and journals held by university libraries in Japan. http://ci.nii.ac.jp/books/en/
14. Send for materials from external institutions Materials Kobe Univ. Library doesn t have Materials Kobe Univ. Library doesn t have is also available by ordering from external institutions (other universities, research organizations ). It takes actual costs. 15.Discovery Service Select Discovery and click Search! Materials which can t be searched by OPAC (Articles, issues, books Kobe Univ. Library doesn t have ) are discovered in a lump!
