Our History Mohawk College was established during the formation of Ontario s College system in 1966. The school was then founded in 1967 as part of a provincial initiative to provide career-oriented courses to Ontario communities. In 1971, Mohawk College opened its performing arts doors to the College and community by developing and opening the Mohawk College Theatre. When developers chose Mohawk College to house a community theatre, their main inspiration for its look, feel, and purpose was based on the design of The O Keefe Centre in Toronto, Ontario (currently named The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts). With its stage crafted from maple and pine, its paint imported from Stratford, and a six input-centre cluster audio system, the Mohawk College Theatre was on its way to housing 1.4 performances daily, all year round. The first major performance held in the Mohawk College Theatre was a production by a local theatre company, Theatre Aquarius. This first performance was the kickoff for many other performances to come. Throughout the years, Mohawk College Theatre was the venue of choice for acts such as: Clara Hughes Brott Music Festival Gail Vaz-Oxlade Jimmie Vaughan CBC Townhalls Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Wild Kratts In 1981, Keith McIntyre was announced as the new President of Mohawk College. After 16 years of leadership, Mohawk College commemorated Keith McIntyre s leadership and service at the College by renaming their theatre venue the McIntyre Theatre. From 1998 to current the McIntyre Centre, currently housing 1,029 seats offers prime artistic space for professional and amateur performing arts. In June 2011, Mohawk College took notice that the arts community in Hamilton was on the rise, and the theatre should be a key player in the growing industry. With this recognition, the McIntyre Theatre was changed to the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre, offering their space and services to all performing arts with no limitations.
