RealFlex and DLX are trademarks of ADC Telecommunications, Inc. Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. General Safety Precautions Warning: Wet conditions increase the potential for receiving an electrical shock when installing or using electrically-powered equipment. To prevent electrical shock, never install or use electrical equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. Caution: Fiber optic cables may be damaged if bent or curved to a radius that is less than the recommended minimum bend radius. Always observe the recommended bend radius limit when installing fiber optic cables and patch cords. Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Page 2

Warning: Contact with underground cables or pipes, especially electric power cables and gas service lines, could interrupt local utility service and cause serious personal injury and extensive property damage. Before digging, check with all local utilities for the presence of buried cables or pipes. 1 GENERAL INFORMATION The DLX Universal Drop Cable consists of a 3 mm reduced bend radius indoor cable that is encased within a flat-style outside plant (OSP) cable sheath. If the drop cable transitions from an OSP environment to an inside environment, the outer sheath must be removed to allow the 3 mm cable to be routed to the ONT. As a option, universal drop cables can be ordered with a toneable copper tracer wire. This allows the cable to be located if buried. A cross-sectional view of the cable is shown in Figure 1. Universal drop cables may be used in aerial, direct buried, or conduit buried applications. When the OSP cable sheath is stripped away, the exposed 3 mm cable can be used as a standard indoor drop cable. Drop cables are normally installed with minimal slack at the multi-port services terminal (MST) with any excess slack stored at the customer premise. A minimum bend radius of 7.5 mm must be observed for the 3 mm indoor cable. Cable Cross-Section The DLX Universal Drop Cable is available with two options: 1) Both ends of the cable may be terminated with hardened DLX connectors. 2) One end can be terminated with a hardened DLX connector and the other end can be terminated with a standard SC/APC connector. The first option is for applications where the drop cable will only be used outdoors. The second option is for applications where one segment of the cable will be used outdoors and the other segment will be routed into a building. With the second option, the exposed 3 mm fibers and the standard SC/APC connector are protected with a pulling sock. The temperature considerations for the DLX Universal Drop Cable are shown in Table 1. Page 3

Table 1. Temperature Considerations CONDITION Operating Installation Storage/Shipping PARAMETER 40ºF to +158ºF ( 40ºC to +70ºC) 22ºF to +140ºF ( 30ºC to +60ºC) 40ºF to +167ºF ( 40ºC to +75ºC) 2 BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION This section provides general installation considerations, lists the tools and materials required for drop cable installation, and provides unpacking and inspection procedures. 2.1 Installation Overview Installing a DLX Universal Drop Cable involves completing the following main tasks: The drop cable is typically installed between the MST and the subscriber ONT. Follow local practice and guidelines for pulling and installing drop cables. If the drop cable is equipped with a black mesh pulling sock, the sock must be removed following routing and placement of the cable. If the drop cable is routed indoors, the OSP cable sheath must be removed from the cable starting at the point where the cable enters the building and continuing to the termination point with the ONT. After the cable is connected to the ONT, service is enabled by connecting the drop cable hardened connector to the appropriate subscriber distribution port on the MST. 2.2 Tools and Materials Required for Installation The following basic tools, auxiliary equipment, and materials are required for Universal Drop Cable installation: Vertical roller reel (if drop cable is mounted on a cable spool) 216B key tool (used to loosen optical port dust caps on the MST) Hardened connector/adapter cleaning kit Connector cleaning kit Utility knife or snips Flat cable stripping tool such as FOD-2000 Speed Slitter (for removal of OSP sheath) 2.3 Unpacking and Inspection This section provides instructions for opening the shipping boxes, verifying that all parts have been received, and verifying that no shipping damage has occurred. Use the following procedure to unpack and inspect the cables and all accessories: 1. Open the shipping carton(s) and carefully inspect the cables and the connector. 2. If there are damages, contact ADC (see Section 9) for an RMA (Return Material Authorization) and to reorder if replacement is required. Page 4

3 GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION This section provides general installation information for all Universal Drop Cable Assemblies. Depending on the length of the cable, the cable may be coiled up and placed in box or it may be coiled on a spool. 3.1 Cable Handling Recommendations 4 INSTALLATION Cable Bend Radius Limits: Take care to observe the recommended minimum bend radius limits for the cable. Always maintain a minimum bend radius of 7.5 mm. Pulling the Cable: Do not exceed 100 lbs of force when applying pulling force to a connector dust cap eye. Do not exceed 75 lbs of force when applying pulling force to a pulling sock loop. Caution: Do not pull the 3 mm drop cable through conduit without the pulling sock in place. Using the attached SC/APC connector to pull the cable may cause internal damage to the cable. Coiled Cable Handling: If the drop cable assembly is placed in a box with other cables, carefully remove the packaging material to expose the cable coil. Carefully remove the coiled cable assemblies from the box and then carefully cut the cable ties to release the cable coil. Caution: The Universal Drop Cable assembly is like a coiled spring when secured with cable ties. Be prepared for the cable to unwind with sufficient force to become tangled when the cable ties are cut. Use caution when cutting cable ties and do not cut the drop cable. Spooled Cable Handling: If the drop cable assembly is coiled on a spool, remove the spool from the box. Place the cable spool on a vertical roller reel. DLX Universal Drop Cables are installed the same as standard flat OSP drop cables. For aerial applications, use P-clamps or other approved hardware to secure the drop to the pole and/or wall. For aerial and direct buried applications, always follow local practices and guidelines. Caution: Improper handling can damage fiber optic cables. Do not bend fiber optic cable more sharply than the minimum recommended bend radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specified. Do not compress the fiber or allow it to kink. 4.1 Pulling DLX Universal Drop Cable When pulling the DLX Universal Drop Cable through conduit, pull the cable from the MST (outside plant terminal) towards the ONT at the customer premise. If both cable ends are terminated with hardened DLX connectors, connect a pulling string or mule tape to one of the dust cap eyes. Do not exceed 100 lbs of force when applying pulling force to a dust cap eye. If one end of the cable is terminated with SC/APC connectors, a pulling sock with a loop will be attached to that end of the cable. Connect a pulling string or mule tape to the pulling sock loop. Do not exceed 75 lbs of force when applying pulling force to a pulling sock loop. Take care to avoid excessive bending, kinking, etc. which may cause damage to the fiber. When the cable is installed, store only minimal slack at the MST. Store any excess slack at the ONT. Always follow local practices and safety measures when pulling cable. Page 5

4.2 Grounding Cable Drop cables equipped with metallic strength members, a metal sheath, or toneable wire may require grounding. When installing cables with metallic elements, always check local codes for the grounding requirements. If grounding is required, connect the metallic strength members, metal sheath, or toneable wire to an approved grounding system (not provided). Check local codes for grounding system installation, use of clamps, wire size, and any other grounding requirements. Install a grounding system that meets all local electrical codes. 5 USING DLX HARDENED CONNECTORS AND ADAPTERS DLX hardened connectors and adapters provide sealed environmental protection for the subscriber drop cable connector and the SC adapter mounted within the DLX MST optical port. For additional information about the DLX MST, refer to the OmniReach DLX Mini Multi-Port Service Terminal User Manual (ADCP-96-159). The following sections provide a description of the connector and adapter components and provide instructions for connecting or disconnecting the drop cable to/from the optical ports. 5.1 Connector Components The basic components of the DLX drop cable connector are shown in Figure 2. The dust cap threads onto the connector coupling nut. The O-ring on the connector body provides a tight seal when the dust cap is in place. A pulling eye is provided in the end of the dust cap for pulling the drop cable through conduit. Do not exceed a pulling force of 100 lbs when pulling from the dust cap pulling eye. The dust cap threads into the adapter housing. An O-ring on the dust cap provides a tight seal when the dust cap is in place. Note: The 216B key tool may be needed to loosen the dust cap to allow removal. Page 6

OPTICAL CONNECTOR PORT 23582-A DUST CAP Figure 3. DLX Optical Port Adapter Components 5.2 Connecting Drop Cable to a DLX MST Optical Port Use the following procedure to connect a drop cable to a DLX optical port on the DLX MST: Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. 1. Before removing the drop cable connector dust cap, clean any debris from around the drop cable connector body (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced onto the ferrule. 2. Unscrew the dust cap from the drop cable connector housing (see Figure 2). 3. Before removing the MST optical port dust cap, clean any debris from around the MST optical ports (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced onto the optical port. 4. Unscrew the dust cap (see Figure 3) from the DLX MST optical port. If necessary, use the 216B key tool (accessory) to loosen the dust cap. 5. Clean both the optical port adapter and the drop cable connector (requires accessory kit FHD-ACC-CLNKIT1) as specified in ADCP-96-163. 6. Align the drop cable connector with the optical port as shown in Figure 4. The protrusions on the drop cable connector should line up with the arrow on the optical port. Page 7

5.3 Disconnecting Drop Cable From a DLX MST Optical Port Use the following procedure to disconnect a drop cable from an optical port on the MST enclosure: Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. 1. Before separating the drop cable dust cap from the optical port dust cap (see Figure 5), remove any debris from around the two dust caps (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced into either dust cap. 2. Unscrew the optical port dust cap from the drop cable dust cap. 3. Before removing the drop cable connector from the optical port, clean any debris from around the MST optical ports (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced onto the optical port. 4. Unscrew the drop cable connector coupling nut (see Figure 4) from the optical port. 5. Grasp the connector and pull it straight out of the optical port. Approximately 5 lbs of force is required to extract the connector. 6. Thread the optical port dust cap into the optical port and tighten until finger tight. 7. Thread the drop cable dust cap onto the drop cable connector coupling nut and tighten until finger tight (see Figure 2). Warning: Invisible infrared radiation can seriously damage the retina of your eye. Do not look into the launching (output) end of an active fiber. A clean, protective cap or hood MUST be immediately placed over any radiating bulkhead receptacle or optical connector to avoid exposure to potentially dangerous amounts of radiation. This practice also helps to prevent contamination of connectors and adapters. 5.4 Installing the DLX to Standard Hardened Adapter Conversion Kit A conversion kit is available (DLX-OPT-CONV-25) that makes the DLX connector compatible with the standard hardened adapter which is used with ADC s standard Multi-port Services Terminal (MST). Use the following procedure to install the conversion kit: 1. Remove the dust cap and lanyard from the DLX connector as shown in Figure 6. 2. Slide the large coupling nut over the DLX connector as shown in Figure 7. 3. Align the arrow on the adapter with the slot on the DLX connector and then thread the small coupling nut into the adapter. Tighten finger tight. 4. Install the large dust cap over the adapter and then thread the large coupling nut into the dust cap as shown in Figure 8. Tighten finger tight. 5. Slide the free end of the lanyard onto the DLX connector boot. 6. The DLX connector may now be used with ADC s standard MST. Follow the procedures in the MST User Manual (ADCP-96-040) when connecting the converted DLX connector to ADC s standard MST or when cleaning the DLX connector. Page 9

6 PULLING SOCK REMOVAL Depending on the option ordered, one end of the DLX Universal Drop Cable may be terminated with a non-hardened SC/APC connector. When this option is selected, the non-hardened SC/ APC connector is protected with a black mesh pulling sock that may be used for pulling the cable through a duct. After the cable is routed into position, use the following procedure to remove the pulling sock: 1. The drop cable is shipped with convoluted tubing placed over the pulling sock and SC/ APC connector. Remove the convoluted tubing from the cable assembly by cutting the cable ties that secure the convoluted tubing to the cable assembly. 2. Locate the pulling sock. It is the obvious black object that is attached to the cable end as shown in Figure 11. 3. A length of heat shrink tubing secures the pull sock to the cable. Locate the rip cord that extends from the end of the tubing. Figure 11. Pulling Sock Page 12

4. Wind the rip cord around a needle nose pliers, as shown in Figure 12, and then pull the rip cord towards the pulling sock (SC/APC connector). Figure 12. Rip Cord 5. Pull the rip cord to split the heat shrink along the path of the cord. Pull straight through to make a straight path as shown in Figure 13. Figure 13. Pull Rip Cord Page 13

6. Remove the heat shrink tubing from the cable and the pulling sock as shown in Figure 14. Figure 14. Remove Heat Shrink 7. Remove tape to free the pulling sock from the cable as shown in Figure 15. Figure 15. Remove Tape Page 14

8. Slide the pulling sock off the cable assembly as shown in Figure 16. Figure 16. Remove Pulling Sock 7 DROP CABLE OSP SHEATH REMOVAL The drop cable OSP sheath must be removed from any section of the DLX Universal Drop Cable that will be routed within a building because the sheath is not rated for indoor use. After removing the pulling sock, use the following procedure to remove the cable sheath back to the point where the cable enters the building. 1. Separate and then re-assemble the FOD-2000 Speed Slitter tool over the cable as shown in Figure 17. Figure 17. FOD Speed Splitter Tool Page 15

2. Place the Speed Splitter Tool on the cable at the point where the sheath enters the building. Clamp the tool over the OSP sheath and squeeze handles together as shown in Figure 18. The blades will cut into the sides of the drop cable. Figure 18. Splitter Tool Installed 3. Draw tool along the length of the drop cable in the direction of the connector. Take care as you approach the connector to avoid cutting into the 3 mm jacket that covers each fiber. 4. Pull the Speed Slitter tool towards the SC/APC connector as shown in Figure 19. Continue pulling the tool along the cable until the tool reaches the end of the OSP cable sheath. Take care at the end of the OSP cable sheath to avoid cutting into the 3 mm jacket that covers each fiber. Figure 19. Splitting Cable Sheath Page 16

5. Gently twist the cable a few times to separate the sheath from the fiber. Pull the sheath apart until the beginning of the cut is reached as shown in Figure 20. Figure 20. Remove Cable Sheath 6. Using a utility knife or snips, remove the excess OSP cable sheath and strength members. The individual fiber is then ready for installation as shown in Figure 21. Figure 21. Cable Jacket Removed Page 17

7. Store any excess drop cable slack at the customer premise (storage loop behind ONT) as shown in Figure 22. Remove the tape that secures the bag over the SC/APC connector and then remove the bag as shown in Figure 23. Figure 23. Remove Bag Page 18

8 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES Maintenance is limited to cleaning the DLX connectors and the MST optical port adapters as needed to maintain optimal performance. Caution: Clean the connector body and adapter before disconnecting a drop from the adapter port or removing the adapter port dust cap to minimize contaminants from being introduced into the terminal adaptor port and onto it's connector end face. 8.1 DLX Connector Cleaning Procedure Cleaning kit (FHD-ACC-CLNKIT1) is required for this procedure. Use the following procedure to clean the drop cable connector: 1. Before removing the drop cable connector dust cap, clean any debris from around the drop cable connector body (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced onto the ferrule. 2. Unscrew the drop cable connector dust cap from the end of the drop cable connector. 3. Examine the end of the drop cable connector and note the position of the protrusions on the connector as shown in Figure 24. PROTRUSIONS CASSETTE CLEANING TAPE DIRECTION OF CONNECTOR MOTION PROTRUSIONS ANGLED CONNECTOR DETAIL DRAWING 23591-B Figure 24. Typical Angled Connector End-Face Detail Page 19

4. Locate the cleaning tape cassette that is provided with the cleaning kit. 5. Open the tape shutter by squeezing the lever on the underside of the cassette and then keep the shutter open by continuing to squeeze the lever. 6. Hold the connector so the protrusions are perpendicular to the length of the cleaning cassette as shown in Figure 25. Tilt the connector to the right (no more than 8 degrees) to place the connector in the correct position for cleaning. Note: The drop cable connector uses angled SC type connectors. Make sure the connector end-face is pointing in the correct direction of the cleaning motion. With light pressure, slide the connector end-face once across the tape in the direction shown using a smooth linear motion. Do not press too hard and do not repeat the cleaning motion with the same tape. 8. Release the lever on the underside of the cassette to close the tape shutter. 9. Repeat steps 4 through 7 until the connector has been cleaned three times. 10. When the connector is clean, the drop cable may be connected to a DLX optical port on the DLX MST (refer to Section 5.2) or the drop cable dust cap may be reinstalled. Tighten dust cap or until finger tight. Page 20

8.2 DLX MST Adapter/Connector Cleaning Procedure Cleaning kit (FHD-ACC-CLNKIT1) is required for this procedure. Use the following procedure to clean the MST optical port adapters and the internal connectors: 1. Before removing the MST optical port dust cap, clean any debris from around the MST optical ports (preferably using compressed air) to minimize contaminants from being introduced onto the optical port. 2.
