TM LynxCrypt 100 Cardless Digital Scrambling System For Digital TV Systems I. Introduction Telelynx introduces a cardless, cost-effective content encryption system, called LynxCrypt 100, to meet the requirement of cable operators who prefer to run a basic, simple encryption system at the beginning to reduce their front-end investmenet. LynxCrypt 100 uses the technology of Addressable Software Trap (AST), developed by Telelynx, to encrypt the channels. LynxCrypt 100 is designed to be upgradeable to a full scale Conditional Access System (CAS), model LynxCrypt 200, which already has a very successful deployment in numerous digital systems around the world. LynxCrypt 100 allows operators to automatically shut off the viewing right of subscribers from the headend when subscription expires. The advanced version of LynxCrypt 100 also includes a practical subscriber management system (SMS) designed for cable/mmds operators. This SMS supports Stop/ Resume authorization as well as tier (package)-based subscription. A basic billing system and subscription statistics are also included in the LynxCrypt 100 system. Optional functions such as master-slave STB, pay-per view (PPV), Mosaic program guide, and auto database backup are also available for operators to select. The set-top box (STB) is programmed in the factory to decode the encryption software from the transport stream. With this scheme, therefore, any un-authorized STB will not be able to view any scrambled programs. No smart card is needed in the LynxCrypt 100 system, leading to a big saving for the operators. The STB also supports "FTA Block" to disable the output of FTA channels. II. System Architecture LynxCrypt 100 cardless Scrambling system head-end includes Re-multiplexers, Scramblers and QAM modulators, one Data Distributor, and one PC based CA-SMS server to run LynxCrypt CAS 100 and LynxCrypt SMS 100 applications, and up to 9 PC based SMS client stations. Under the coverage of MMDS/CATV, the system operator can deliver his/her TV services to authorized subscribers of 2000 up to 1 millions. The system architecture of LynxCrypt 100 is briefly described in the following diagram. The DVB compliant scrambling software is built into each scrambler; a PC running Netmanager software easily controls the scrambling of the program. A server PC with built-in SQL database executes encrypted EMMG software to authorize subscriber's package subscriptions. Operators will be able to control each subscriber from the computer in a simple on-off manner, or from the sophisticated Subscription Management System (SMS). In the SMS manner, up to 9 SMS client PCs can simultaneously access the database via the network. The program package is provided to simplify the subscription management.

STB can be upgraded to take smart card reader in the future when running a full scale CAS is required Subscriber's STB can continuously view authorized scrambled channels even when the CAS/SMS server PC fails or is powered off. V. Features of LynxCrypt 100 The DigiLynx 810 series Re-multiplexers, Scramblers and QAM modulators, Data Distributor and 8420LT STB are compatible with DVB standard, ensuring your long-term investment. LynxCrypt SMS server, CAS-EMMG, and OTA Upgrade modules are integrated into a single Windows based server PC for maximum saving. The DigiLynx 810SR-T scrambler can be updated to support full-scale LynxCrypt 200 CAS.
