Welcome From Emma Banks, Chair of the 41 st O2 Silver Clef Committee Welcome to the 41st O2 Silver Clef Awards. First of all, congratulations to all our award winners and a massive thank you to all of them for being here today and supporting Nordoff Robbins. As I look back on last year s milestone celebration, I feel proud to see how far this event has come, and prouder still in the knowledge that it has raised over 9 million for Nordoff Robbins to date. This charity has dedicated itself to delivering life-changing music therapy to some of the most vulnerable and isolated people, and their work is only made possible by events like this which help to raise the crucial funds they need. Music is something that all of us here can relate to, be that through our work, or just through our favourite song - music can mean so much to so many. For the people who Nordoff Robbins help, music can literally be their lifeline, and so our continued support is vital to making sure that they can reach those who need them most. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow committee members, without whom today would not be possible. Their dedication and hard work has been fundamental in shaping this event into the huge success it is today, they are: Proudly celebrating your Best Female Artist award and the important work of Nordoff Robbins. Brian Berg, Stefan Demetriou, Charlie Lycett, Chris Edmonds, Claire Haffenden, David Munns, Jackie Hyde, Jason Morais, Joe Munns, Mark Krendel, Neil Warnock, Paul Samuels, Steve Homer and Stuart Galbraith. I would also like to thank today s host, Gaby Roslin and our Blue Carpet presenter Peter Andre, for their continued support; we are so grateful for their time and effort, and for helping us make this event so special. A further thank you to all of our sponsors for their invaluable input; the O2 Silver Clef Awards could not happen without you. Finally, a massive thanks to all of you for being here today your support makes such a difference to Nordoff Robbins and all those that they help. We hope you have a brilliant afternoon with us today. Yours sincerely, Emma Banks Agent CAA and Chair, O2 Silver Clef Committee #O2SilverClefs 3

O2 Fan Clef Award Music can change lives To celebrate the power of music in our everyday lives, O2 launched a very special search to find someone whose life has been changed by music for the better. Everyone has their own story to share, so we asked music fans nationwide to tell us theirs. The prize? The first ever O2 Fan Clef award. The lucky winner was selected by a panel of Nordoff Robbins music therapists and has joined us today to walk down the blue carpet to receive their award and celebrate their win with a once in a lifetime experience, together with some of the world s top artists. When words fail me, music speaks Music therapy has helped countless people have a voice in, and make sense of, their world. The work Nordoff Robbins does transforms lives through music - bringing joy to young and old by opening up new ways to communicate and connect with the world around them. We are proud supporters of them, and the amazing work they do. To help to give a voice to those who have none, each instrument in this room will be donated by O2 to the new Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre in Newcastle which is supported by the Graham Wylie Foundation.

2016 O2 Silver Clef Committee The O2 Silver Clef Awards were started back in 1976 by an enthusiastic team of music industry professionals who wanted to use their skills and contacts to help raise funds for Nordoff Robbins. Nordoff Robbins is a unique and special charity which I am proud to support via the Silver Clef lunch. Every year the event is so very special and each year the help and interest grows, bringing with it extra and much needed funds to provide more therapists to continue the fantastic work of music therapy. Jackie Hyde Today we now have a committee of 15 dedicated music industry experts who work hard all year round to make sure the Awards are the very best they can be. The committee work with Nordoff Robbins every step of the way and without them the O2 Silver Clef Awards simply would not exist so we thank them wholeheartedly for everything they do. Our 2016 O2 Silver Clef Award Winner PRESENTING LIONEL RICHIE... I am so proud to be one of the few Americans to receive the O2 Silver Clef Award which supports such a wonderful charity. Nordoff Robbins dedicate themselves to changing lives through music, and to me that is something truly special Lionel Richie We are so honoured to have Lionel with us today to accept this very well-deserved award and help raise money for Nordoff Robbins. Congratulations Lionel! Music icon. International superstar. 100 million albums sold worldwide. Oscar winner. Golden Globe winner. Five-time Grammy winner. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 16-time American Music Award winner. Five-time People s Choice Award winner. The list of awards goes on.and it amplifies the fact that Lionel Richie s discography is second to none. His albums and singles are part of the fabric of American pop music. In fact, Lionel and the legendary Irving Berlin are the only two songwriters in history to hold the honour of achieving No. 1 records for nine consecutive years. Born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, a chance meeting on college campus led to Lionel joining local group The Mystics who went on to become The Commodores, with Lionel playing piano and saxophone. A record deal with iconic label Motown Records followed in 1971 and first single Machine Gun was released in 1974, followed by a string of other hits including Three Times A Lady and Stuck On You until Lionel went solo in 1981. Lionel became one of the most successful artists of the 1980s with Endless Love (sang with Diana Ross), All Night Long, Hello, Dancing On The Ceiling and many more hits reaching the top of the charts. Lionel s hugely successful career continues and he is a true multi-generational artist, as evidenced by his appearance as a celebrity judge on American Idol. He remains constantly relevant, and has worked with a host of younger writers and producers, from Akon, Ne-Yo and Stargate to Bob Sinclar. In 2012 he returned to his Tuskegee roots by re-working some of his biggest hits as duets with country superstars including Shania Twain and Tim McGraw. The album was one of the biggest of his career reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard chart. Lionel s rapport with his fans is legendary and they sing along at his concerts all over the world. They relate to the honesty in his music songs that have created quintessential moments in their lives. He continues to tour the world and joins us today just before he plays three nights at 20,000 capacity The O2 in London. 24 25

Jo Carter Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications Hello, good afternoon and welcome to the 2016 O2 Silver Clef awards. Another year has gone by and what a year it has been! In 2015 we came together at the O2 Silver Clef awards to celebrate Nordoff Robbins 40th birthday and to celebrate all that is great about music. We have used our 40th year as a catalyst for change and growth and some really exciting things have happened including our first awareness day, Get Loud for Nordoff Robbins. Nordoff Robbins doesn t receive any government funding and therefore we rely on events like the O2 Silver Clefs and other fundraising initiatives to fund our work. Individuals like yourself collectively make the difference and together ensure that adults and children across the UK, many of whom live each day with unimaginable challenges, get the support and help they need and deserve. Music is the universal language of mankind. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow There are many ways in which you or your company can get involved. If you would like to find out more about Nordoff Robbins and how you could support our work please contact me on: jo.carter@nordoff-robbins.org.uk Thank you for being here today and for supporting Nordoff Robbins. WHEN IT CAME TO MUSIC, MR. JACK WAS ONE HELL OF A WHISKEYMAKER. LIMITED TO 3,000 PIECES WORLDWIDE Raymond Weil has a heritage steeped in a passion for music and the arts and has always had music at its heart, Raymond Weil continues to collaborate with the music industry through its support of emerging talent, most prestigious artists, music award ceremonies and music based charities which lends itself naturally to a partnership with Nordoff Robbins. Some bands create great works of art and then there s the Jack Daniel s Silver Cornet Band. Outfitted with uniforms and instruments that he purchased himself, Mr. Jack thought his band, like his whiskey, was the perfect way to bring people together. But with an enthusiasm that often outmatched their ability, the group of townsmen and distillery workers never quite hit the big time. Fortunately, promoting the Silver Cornet Band wasn t Mr. Jack s only job. And luckily, even after 150 years, his other one is going just fine. GIVE A GOOD PERFORMANCE. Claudia s Story betty s story "I can t imagine a world without music therapy. For my daughter, music has brought her to life. We believe Nordoff Robbins is gradually unlocking a new and confident Claudia." "Music therapy has been amazing for Mum, it s turned a light on that we thought was long gone. She s 95 and has always loved music and now it s being used to help her unlock happy memories and communicate with loved ones." Claudia was born prematurely and totally silent. The special care unit diagnosed only a windpipe problem, but Claudia was in constant pain - she screamed all day, barely able to feed. She didn t reach any milestones; she couldn t babble or crawl, couldn t sit up until 16 months and couldn t walk until she was four. She had complete sensory overload, which was exhausting. When a national study of developmental disorders finally diagnosed her with a very rare chromosomal disorder we were determined to get her the help she needed. Through Nordoff Robbins, Claudia is living her life to the fullest; music has finally given her world some meaning. Gabriella Claudia s mum We knew that music calmed Claudia and my mother in law suggested I contact Nordoff Robbins. One of the most defining moments of our lives was our first visit there. Without me needing to explain, the therapist Nick just opened the door showing Claudia a wonderful grand piano. She marched straight up to it and played several keys, which Nick mimicked on another piano. Claudia was completely mesmerised. I started crying, a huge weight lifted as I realised this is exactly what she needed; we had finally found something which would bring happiness for our little girl. One year on Claudia plays, makes vocalisations and I can now communicate with her; she nods yes if I say let s go and see Nick and shakes excitedly. She recently even attempted her first word! She has incredible rhythm too and now moves her body to music. Music and dancing was a huge part of Mum s life. She came from a musical household in Ireland and loved to go dancing on a Saturday night at The Buffalo Bar in Camden, where she met my Dad, a fiddle player. My parents married in 1946 just after the war ended and had six children. Dad died aged 76 and Mum was diagnosed with dementia ten years later. She started to forget about things. She started to get very confused and anxious about things and that s when the hallucinations started; the man and boy on the stairs, the wild parties next door, all in her head. She was scared and so were we. Dementia is a cruel disease. It s taken Mum away and left a hollow shell. I live with her and yet she has no idea who I am. Some days I m her mother, others her sister, but mostly I m that nice lady. It breaks my heart. I moved in with Mum as a full time carer in 2005 which is when she started Nordoff Robbins music therapy at the Raglan Day Centre in Kentish Town. She cried the first time we put her on the bus but it very quickly became a big part of her life, especially the music therapy. Kariina, the Nordoff Robbins therapist, has used music to unlock a part of Mum that I thought was lost forever. She plays the old Irish tunes that connect with Mum and it takes her right back to when she was younger. She remembers the words and sings; she even gets up to dance. Nordoff Robbins has brought music back into my mother s life and it s through music that we have found a way to remember the good times, have fun and see her in a way that we will always want to remember her. Music won t cure her dementia, we know that. But it does make the life she has happier, more fulfilling and gives her a way to communicate with us and the world around her. It s easy to take music for granted but watching Mum respond to old songs and tunes she has always known highlights how important it really is. Music lights up her life and gives us our Mum back. leave a gift for the future Each of us has the opportunity to leave a gift for the future, helping Nordoff Robbins grow our services for generations to come. Legacy gifts help train new music therapists, bring music therapy to new areas, and build new centres. After taking care of your loved ones, we would be honoured if you would consider leaving a gift in your will. All gifts are important to us, regardless of size. Each gift will reach someone who needs music therapy in their life. Read how music therapy has helped someone like Elizabeth As a 23 year old living with dysphasia and mild autism, life can be totally overwhelming. The dysphasia means that I have real trouble reading people s facial expressions and voice tone, and that often makes me very confused and very frustrated. For years people have struggled to understand me, and this led to severe depression and anxiety. At times I have felt like I just can t go on with life. I don t know where I would be without Nordoff Robbins. For 40 years, Nordoff Robbins has been providing music therapy to people of all ages and all walks of life. Legacies have played a hugely important part in helping us do this generous individuals with a passion for music have thought of us in their will, allowing our music therapists to change lives through music. The first time I came to Nordoff Robbins I was extremely nervous. My mum and sister came with me, knowing there was a good chance that I just wouldn t be able to do it. But I was blown away, that first session was more than I could have expected; that they were incredible. The team were just so warm and welcoming and I realised straight away that this was the environment for me, a place where I could finally be myself. That was six years ago, and today I would be lost without Nordoff Robbins. I attend group sessions once a week where I get to make music and express myself with people that I now consider my good friends. Music therapy helps me in so many ways; for me it is a safe place where I can forget my problems and just be happy. Music therapy has had such a calming influence on my mind; it helps me manage every day. My music therapist Lindsay has helped me build my confidence and selfesteem and the way we share stories and support each other in the group has greatly reduced my anxiety and depression. I recently wrote a song about the people in my group which I performed to them during a session I wanted to show them how much I appreciate their support and friendship, and that was a really special moment. Because of the difference in my anxiety and depression I am now able to work part time which is huge step forward for me, and I even volunteer here at Nordoff Robbins assisting in a parent and toddler group. I am so inspired by the work the music therapists do here that I would love to train in the profession myself one day, so that I can help others like they helped me. Music therapy brings people to life, just by picking up an instrument and joining together in music it helps to heal people, whatever pain or trauma or problem you have been through, it can help. You can be yourself, without judgement and that is what I love about it. I see how music changes people in the group for the better, how it has changed me for the better. Not only has it made a difference to my mental health, I have also become so much more grateful for the things and the people I have around me. Without Nordoff Robbins I would probably still be struggling every day. When words fail me, music speaks and it s made a huge impact on my life; I just feel so privileged for that. If you would like to find out more about leaving a gift in your will, we have provided key information, answers to frequently asked questions, and our promise to all who decide to leave a gift in their will on our website on www.nordoff-robbins.org.uk/legacies. 92 #O2SilverClefs #O2SilverClefs 93

THE 10 ARTISTS IN THE SHORTLIST ARE Adele Little Mix Muse The 1975 Ed Sheeran Bring Me the Horizon Florence + THE Machine Catfish and the Bottlemen One Direction Rudimental The Ticketmaster Best Live Act Award is the only Award presented today that has been voted for by the public. 10 of the best in live talent, made up for the first time of entirely British acts, were handpicked by a panel of music industry experts, based on Ticketmaster s most searched artists who performed in the UK over the last year. We then opened the vote up and asked the public to pick their favourite. The past year has been a busy one for all our shortlisted superstars. Adele, Little Mix, Muse and The 1975, all brought music to the masses with their extensive world tours, Florence + The Machine also headed state-side with some European dates to boot and are due to put on what is sure to be an electric headline performance at this year s British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park. Recently picking up his first ever Grammy award, Ed Sheeran released his Wembley Edition of hit album X and unveiled his brand new video for Lay it all on me - his collaborative track with fellow Best Live Act nominees, Hackney partystarters Rudimental who took to the stage for a third time at Glastonbury 2015. Sheffield based rock band Bring Me The Horizon who are currently on a world tour of their own put on a spectacular performance at Reading Festival 2015 with the release of their shiny new album That s The Spirit, whilst Indie rock band Catfish and The Bottlemen embarked on a UK tour and were tipped by Radio 1 as the number one act to see at Glastonbury 2015. In March and August 2015 media frenzy eschewed as the world's biggest boy band One Direction announced the shock departure of member Zayn Malik, followed by the news that they would be taking a break in 2016 after 5 years together. Stepping out on stage at the very place where they started, the remaining 4-piece performed their hit single History before embarking on their hiatus. Out of this incredibly talented line up it was up to the fans to choose the overall winner. At the time of writing, the general public were still voting in their thousands.
