ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY (AIP) AN OVERVIEW Office of Academic Integrity (OAI) Fall Semester 2014-15
TYPES OF AI VIOLATIONS (excerpts from AIP) CHEATING (e.g., giving and/or receiving assistance on quizzes, tests, and exams). PLAGIARISM (e.g., using another person s work as one s own without acknowledgments). FABRICATION OF DATA (e.g., inventing data). PRESENTING FALSE OR MISLEADING CREDENTIAL (e.g., falsifying documents). COLLUSION (e.g., collaborating with another when not allowed). FREE RIDING (e.g., failing to fully contribute to the team s efforts).
PLEASE BEWARE Mere POSSESSION * of any active electronic device (e.g., mobile phones) containing course related materials during the exam constitutes cheating and is subject to dismissal. * Possession means having the device in the close proximity of the students such as in hand, on the chair, on the lap, and alike.
PENALTY FOR VIOLATIONS OF AIP Cheating violations are subject to dismissal from ADU. Lesser sanctions may apply for other types of violations, depending on the severity of the cases. TEAM ASSIGNMENTS JOINT AND SEVERAL ACCOUNTABILITY OAI assesses violations of AIP provisions (e.g., plagiarism) at the team s level, rather than individual members. In cases of violations, all members of the team are held equally accountable.
PLAGIARISM All borrowed materials direct or indirect (paraphrased) require acknowledgments of the sources Examples of materials borrow that require reverencing are texts, graphs, photos, etc. from external sources such as internet, journals, books, and alike. APA CITATION STYLE APA citation style requires both in-text citation and end References. In APA citation style: a. In-text citations are placed within sentences and paragraphs. b. Sources of all borrowed materials are alphabetically listed at the end.
IN-TEXT CITATIONS IN APA STYLE (Examples of General, Specific, and Internet) GENERAL CITATION Community policing involves developing a relationship between citizens and the police department (Jones, 2005). SPECIFIC CITATION In 1998, Jones reported community policing involves developing a relationship between citizens and the police department (p. 48). CHECKING FOR PLAGIARISM (Turnitin Software) Students written assignments are uploaded to Turnitin. A Turnitin report is generated showing an aggregate Similarity Index (SI) expressed in a percentage (%). A heavily borrowed paper (e.g., SI of %95) with proper citations is not plagiarized, though it may lack academic quality. A lightly borrowed paper (e.g., SI of %15) without proper citations is plagiarized. Plagiarism occurs when in-text citations and the end References are not provided
INTERPRETATION OF SI Academic Quality Vs. Academic Integrity A heavily borrowed paper (e.g., SI of %95) with proper citations is not plagiarized, though it may lack academic quality. A lightly borrowed paper (e.g., SI of %15) without proper citations is plagiarized. Plagiarism occurs when in-text citations and the end References are not provided
