MICHENER, James A. and A. Grove Day. Rascals in Paradise. New York: Random House (1957). Second printing. Foredge a little foxed, about fine in near fine dustwrapper. A collection of ten tales of the South Pacific. This volume from the library of William Lederer, co-author of, among other things, both Sarkhan and The Ugly American. What makes this copy interesting is that affixed to the recto of the front fly is a long, letterpress printed authors' note Signed by both Michener and Day. The note appears to be a proclamation complete with gold seal, and reads in part: Author's Note: Originally eleven chapters of this book were submitted to the publisher; but upon advice of counsel and after due consideration of the laws governing public decency, Chapter XI was suppressed... The note then humorously describes all the objectionable supposedly omitted content: backsliding, sowing of wild oats, corybantism, overparking, hardness of heart, Sabbatarianism, pantophagy, pudicity, antinomianism, barratry, shooting albatrosses, simony, crapulence, nepotism, robbing Peter to pay Paul, breach of promise, celebrating the witches' sabbath, iconoclasm, dirty pool, chthonianism, Machiavellianism, sybartism, misprision of felony, plagiarism, anthology and assorted torts. Obviously an elaborate practical joke by Michener and Day, it is conceivable that they prepared several of these with different names set in type (as this one is) or possibly it was prepared for Lederer alone. If the former, it would constitute an issue that is currently not in Groseclose; if the latter, it would be unique. At any rate an amusing prank, and an interesting association. #54662... $750 MICHENER, James A. and A. Grove Day. Rascals in Paradise: True Tales of High Adventure in the South Pacific. London: Secker & Warburg (1957). First English edition. Fine in near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with some foxing on the rear panel and a barely visible stain on the spine.
