TEACHER TOOLS: Tongue Twisters in Spanish Trabalenguas en Español

Tongue Twisters in Spanish Tongue Twister Teaching Activity Ideas Class plan for practicing pronunciation with tongue twisters in Spanish. These ideas are easily adaptable based on the Spanish level of the students. Hand out copies of tongue twisters to your class and show the videos. Divide the group in teams to compete, saying each tongue twister and earn points: Version 1. Point accumulation (beginner) Highest points wins 2 Points = Perfect in one try 1 Point = If need to repeat it once 0 Points = If need to repeat it twice or more Version 2. Point Accumulation (advanced) Lowest points wins 0 Points = Perfect in one try +1 Point for every slip of the tongue +4 Points for skipping a trabalengua without finishing Select one tongue twister and ask the students if they know what it means. Select words that are new for them (ex. trigal, trastos, cigarro, plancha, calva, etc.). Ask the students to make a drawing that depicts the tongue twister. Another way to practice the new vocabulary is by giving the students a handout with an incomplete tongue twister with missing words. The students need to fill in the blanks with the new vocabulary. You will need to previously discuss the vocabulary and write the possible words on the board. (For a handout example see page 12 of this document) Ask the students to find other tongue twisters and bring them to class. Sit the class down in a circle and hand out one [ 2 ]

Tongue Twisters in Spanish Tongue Twister Teaching Activity Ideas tongue twister. Each student reads the tongue twister. If it is read perfectly he/she stays in the circle. If there is a mistake, the student and the tongue twister are out of the game. Continue with the next student using a different tongue twister. The last student with no mistakes is the winner. VARIATION: You can use the same tongue twister with all the students or you can give a different one to each student. Select 6 tongue twisters and give each a number from 1 to 6. The student will roll a die and the number will tell which tongue twister he/she will read aloud. You can select tongue twisters of different levels of difficulty and assign the number 1 to the easiest and number 6 to the hardest. This will create a little drama in the class when students see the higher numbers. If you have a bigger class, you can add another dice and use instead 11 tongue twisters with numbers from 2 to 12. Here is an idea for advanced students that want to practice tongue twister memorization. Select a picture that represents each tongue twister and print it on a full page or project it on the wall. (For example, notice that each tongue twister in this deck has an illustration.) Show the student one of the images randomly. He/she will need to guess the tongue twister and say it aloud.
