Then move west, and experience Hollywood old and new as you visit iconic landmarks and spend time on a studio backlot. And, as no trip to Los Angeles is complete without time spent near the Pacific Ocean, conclude your stay exploring hidden cultural gems in Santa Monica and Malibu. DAY 1 Welcome to Los Angeles DAY 3 Downtown Districts Arrive in Los Angeles, and check in to your hotel, the historic Millennium Biltmore downtown. Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner and introduction to the program. (D) DAY 2 The Heart of the City The revitalization of downtown Los Angeles over the past decade is a fascinating success story. Begin the day with a walking tour of downtown s architectural highlights, including the Bradbury Building, Disney Hall, Grand Avenue, Angels Flight and the newly opened Broad, led by an L.A. Times staff member. End your walking tour at the famous Grand Central Market. Select your lunch from among the dozens of vendors and food stalls that feature cuisine from all over the world. After lunch, walk to the Los Angeles Times headquarters and meet with senior staff for a behind-the-scenes look at how the paper comes together. Afterward, take a tour of the Olympic printing plant, where The Times is printed daily. This evening, gather for a cocktail with a writer from the Arts and Culture section to discuss the local art scene, and attend an event together. (L) Waves of people from around the globe have shaped the city of Los Angeles Jewish, Armenian, Japanese, Italian, Latino and many others. Trace the threads of some of these narratives today. Begin in Boyle Heights for a morning snack of Mexican treats from La Mascota bakery, and visit such local landmarks as Casa 0101 and Espacio 1839. Continue to Union Station, where so many immigrants arrived when they first landed in Los Angeles. Walk to Olvera Street to see the Avila Adobe, to get a sense the city s Spanish roots. Next, head to Chung King Road, home of many of L.A. s first Chinese inhabitants, to enjoy food from a local restaurant and some of Chinatown s galleries. From here the group will travel to the Japanese American National Museum to learn about the history of Little Tokyo (and Japanese American internment) and how the neighborhood has managed to remain an important locus of Japanese American life. The next stop is the downtown Arts District, with its dozens of murals adorning the streets, and new international gallery spaces such as Hauser & Wirth emerging. DAY 4 Old and New Hollywood The next few days are dedicated to Old and New Hollywood. Explore two of the most famous theaters in Hollywood the El Capitan and the Egyptian Theatre. Have lunch in true Old Hollywood fashion at iconic Musso and Frank Grill which has served Hollywood insiders since 1919. After lunch, go behind the scenes at a working Hollywood studio backlot. Tonight, enjoy behind-thescenes access to a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, live music or a live television taping. (L) DAY 5 Highbrow, Lowbrow Rise early this morning for an optional hike in Griffith Park, from the observatory to the top of Mt. Hollywood, with clear views of the Hollywood sign. Later this morning, meet with industry professionals to learn what it s like to work in the entertainment industry; depending on the departure, you ll be learning from animators, costume designers, filmmakers or producers. Grab lunch like a local as you make your selection from the fleet of food trucks that park outside of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This afternoon, visit LACMA and the Petersen Automotive Museum. This evening, dine at the famous Dresden Restaurant, and enjoy the sounds of jazz musicians Marty and Elayne. (L,D) 4
EXPEDITION EXPERT Carolina A. Miranda Carolina A. Miranda is a Los Angeles Times staff writer covering culture from high to low: museums to murals, art books to comics, documentaries to reaction GIFs. A longtime independent journalist, she has reported on the architecture of skate parks and the intersection of fine art and video games as well as the adventures of the doughnut-making Mexican wrestler of East L.A. When she s not reading about the lives of the artists, she s recapping action movies on Facebook. DAY 6 The Westside Head west toward the ocean this morning to explore the Santa Monica farmers market. Chat with vendors, and sample some of the freshest produce available. Then drive along the coast to see a hidden gem, the Adamson House. This historic house and gardens form the quintessential Malibu-style home. Afterward, walk on the beach with a representative from a local nonprofit and discuss the contentious debates between developers, activists and environmentalists, who all compete for the fragile coastline. Continue to the Getty Center, perched high above the city. Take some time to explore the collection and admire its unparalleled views. Finally, toast the end of your trip with a festive farewell dinner. (D) Kenneth Turan Kenneth Turan is film critic for the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio s Morning Edition as well as the director of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. He has been a staff writer for the Washington Post as well as The Times book review editor. A graduate of Swarthmore College and Columbia University s Graduate School of Journalism, he teaches film reviewing and nonfiction writing at USC. His most recent books are Never Coming to a Theater Near You and Free for All: Joe Papp, the Public and the Greatest Theater Story Ever Told.
