One of 100 copies signed by Tony Appleton and printed in Mardersteig's Dante type; mustard wrappers, sewn, with Offbod device on the front. Foolscap 8vo, 17cm, pp.vii,100, viii-xi, The Azania Press, Medstead, Hampshire, 1931. Set in 16pt Arrighi Italic and printed on unbleached Arnold hand-made paper. Decorative period ornaments. One of 250 copies. Full green vellum, lettered in gilt, rather marked on upper cover. A very good copy with the prospectus loosely inserted. 140 The first printing of a unique household recipe book date 13th Jany., 1711. It contains more than 200 receipts, many contributed by well-known people. One finds Lady Bety Wentworths Gravey Soup, Lady Midelton's Oatmeal Puding, Mrs Womersley's Pipen Jeley; culinary and medicinal receipts by Lord Lonsdall, Lady Allen, Lady Lowther, Mrs Wombwell and others, Much good old fare is given - Wiggs, Veall pye, Tanseys, Gofers, Slipcoat Chees, Ginger Bread, Cakes, home-made wines, &c. 9.Banks (Colin). True to Type: Introducing Letterpress Printing & the Works of Small Presses. Narrow 8vo, [40]pp., printed at the Libanus Press, Marlborough, for the Crafts Council, 1994. Typeset in Joanna and printed on pink recycled paper; 4pp duotone plates by the Senecio Press, printed Rivoli card covers. A fine copy. 25 Published in July 1994 to accompany the exhibition 'True to Type'. This copy with a very lengthy inscription from Colin Banks to Ian Rogerson (about the exhibition going to the John Rylands) at the front. 10.(Bastien Brothers) Bastien Typographica.[Edited by Alfred Bastien]. Large 4to, 31cm, pp.[vi],206, inserts, Bastien Brothers, [West Drayton, Middlesex] n.d. (1937). Set in Monotype Times Roman with Juno for display and initials in Select; many inserted leaves in colours, black-and-white reproductions in the text (many photographic), and with a very extensive display of type specimens at the rear. Grey cloth, upper board titled in gilt. Piece cut from pp.81-82, pp.115-116 cut into bits, otherwise a very good copy of an excellent productions, issued occasionally from 1934. 90 Especially eye-catching are: King's English and the Merchant Prince, by T.E. Elias; Printing Under the White Ensign, by Col. Sgt. F. C. Sheppard, R.M.; Australian Printing History, by John Gartner.

A huge array of types is shown in many colours, mostly in full fount. Some of the less usual ones are: Bernhard Tango, Flamingo, Gayton, Gillies Gothic, Holla script, Lettres Ombrees, Motor, Nova, Onyx, Park Avenue, Schaeffer-Versalien, Signal, Trafton, Trojan. 11.Bawden (Edward, illustrator) & Dell Leigh. East Coasting. 8vo, 25cm, pp.64, Printed at the Curwen Press, Issued by the London and North Eastern Railway, (1931). Title-page and 8 headpieces in colours, 14 line drawn vignettes. Rules, ornaments and borders, mostly in black but with some in red, green or yellow. Stapled into orange paper wrappers, titled in black on the front within a border or rules. Very slight wear to extremities and offsetting of orange from the covers to the rear and title-page, A very good copy indeed. 475 One of the most attractive of Edward Bawden's pre-war commissions with its humorous portrayals of Victorian seaside resorts ("great fun", Bliss p.41). Typefaces used for display include Centaur, Cochin, Fournier-le-Jeune, Koch Italic, Maximilian Antiqua, Moreau-le-Jeune, Perpetua and Walbaum. 12.Bawden (Edward). Hold Fast by Your Teeth [& other stories]. Medium 4to, [64]pp., Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1963. Illustrated with 55 coloured lithographs printed by W.S. Cowell. Pictorial boards from a lithograph by the artist, matching dust-jacket. Bookplate. A fine copy in matching dust-jacket. 350 `Take the Broom' was originally published by Rainbird McLean in an edition of 500 copies in 1952. The text of this has been very much altered. Otherwise, this is the first appearance of the other eight stories, all of which were told by Bawden to his children. In the story Right Away Driver, Richard Bawden may be identified as the engine-driver of the Cheltenham Flyer, Joanna Bawden is the girl in the Schiaparelli hat, and Edward himself is Mr Draw de Nedwab. 13.Bawden (Edward). Take the Broom. Oblong 16mo, 10 X 12.5cm, 32p (including wrappers), Reproduced from Bawden's original by Judd Street Gallery, London, 2014. Designed by Webb & Webb; printed by Aspect Press. 7 full-page colour illustrations after the originals by Edward Bawden. Wrappers illustrated from a lithograph by Edward Bawden. New copy in its blue presentation envelope. 15 The book is one of a set of six tales drawn by Edward Bawden for his children, Richard and Joanna, during 1944. It was first published, in the original size,, redrawn for lithographic printing, in an edition of 500 copies by George Rainbird and Ruari McLean in 1952 for presentation to friends. A new edition of Take the Broom, differing greatly in size and detail, was contained within Hold Fast by Your Teeth (Routledge, 1963). Awarded the Order of the Garter in terms of stocking-fillers for Christmas 2014 by Collinge & Clark. 14.( The Bazaar ) Artistic Amusements: Being Instructions for a Variety of Art Work for home Employment, and Suggestions for a Number of Novel and Saleable Articles for Fancy Bazaars. Profusely illustrated with engravings and decorated with fancy types and ornamental initials. Plum

Set in Monotype Ehrhardt and printed in blue and black on art paper; with 13 full-page colour plates and decorative endpapers. Cream paper-covered boards, titled in gilt up the spine, blocked in gilt on the upper board. A very good to fine copy. 75 With an attractive loosely inserted Christmas card inscribed: 'This seems to be a duplication but never mind! Tom.' 16.(Bewick) Wood Engravings of Thomas Bewick. Reproduced in collotype, selected, with a biographical introduction, by Reynolds Stone. Crown 4to, pp.53[1] + [124]pp plates, Rupert Hart- Davis, London, 1953. Number 131 of 1000 copies printed on Japon and signed by the author. Title-page vignette and 351 other illustrations. Maroon buckram with gilt spine titling, top edge tinted, grey hand-made paper dust-jacket. A fine copy. 175 17.(Bewick) Thomas Bewick Birds: Being Impressions from original wood-blocks. Royal 8vo, pp.xvii[1], 24 leaves, printed on one side of the page only, pp.25-32 (including colophon), Newcastle: David Esslemont, 1984. Handset in Scotch Roman, the title in Old Face Open, printed in black (the title-page in blue and black, engravings titled in grey) on BFK Rives paper. Number 126 of 147 (250) copies in the standard binding. Illustrated with 24 birds and several tailpieces printed from the blocks. Quarter blue cloth, gilt, patterned paper-covered boards, matching dust-jacket. The Biography and Typography of William Caxton, England's First Printer. First edition, 8vo, 22cm, pp.viii,383, London: Trubner & Co, Ludgate Hill, Strassburg: Karl I. Trubner, 1877. 18 plates and many illustrations within the text; decorative paper-covered boards in yellow and black, marbled endpapers. Spine a little darkened, but otherwise a very attractive copy of this seminal work. 140

Sewn in white printed wrappers printed in blue and black, Bewick's magpie on the front and a detail from a portrait of Bewick by James Ramsay on the back (Seven engravings by Bewick are included in the text.) Newly illustrated by Edward Ardizzone [and with an afterword by him concerning his special interest in illustrating this text.]. Foolscap 8vo, pp.24 (inc. colophon), The Bodley Head, London, December 1974. One of 350 copies on art paper. 6 pen-and-ink illustrations within the text. Sewn into plain card covers. Hand-made paper dust-jacket, unlettered, with an additional ink-and-wash drawing in black and grey-blue by the artist. A fine copy 225 Privately printed at the Stellar Press for distribution by the artist and publisher.these illustrations have not been reproduced elsewhere. One of the twenty-four Bodley Head Booklets, 1961-84, which were all printed at The Stellar Press, including illustrations and covers, under the direction of Bill Hummerstone. The texts were set in Ehrhardt metal types (excepting No.5). A special paper was made for the press at Hollingworths' Mill in Maidstone and became know as Stellar Laid. This was first used in No.8 and thereafter in all issues except Nos 12 and 14. The booklet were issued to friends of the authors and the publisher, mostly at Christmas. 22.(Bodley Head Booklet) Boland (Maureen). Garden Lore: Extracts from Old Wives' Lore for Gardeners. Foolscap 8vo, pp.16 (inc. colophon), Printed at the Stellar Press for private distribution by the publishers for Christmas 1976. One of 250 copies on wove paper. 6 full-page illustrations in green taken from sixteenth-century herbals. A Wedding Among the Owls: An extract from The Human Factor. Foolscap 8vo, 15pp. + colophon, Printed at the Stellar Press for private distribution by the author and the publisher for Christmas 1977. One of 250 copies on wove paper. Sewn into plain card covers. Grey Ingres paper dust-jacket printed with a typographical two-colour design using Bodoni braces. A fine copy. 175 24.(Bodley Head Booklet) Cooke (Alistair). The State of the Language. Foolscap 8vo, pp.32 (inc colophon), The Bodley Head, London, December 1984. The booklet contains a speech by Alistair Cooke (San Francisco, 1979) from his collection The Patient Has the Floor, published by the Bodley Head in the following year, 1985.

David Gentleman's drawings are delightfully reminiscent of youthful Cambridge in summertime. Peter Eden in his text and captions carries his erudition with consummate grace, and the overlapping illustrations, a la Humphrey Repton, never fail to surprise.' Firstly, the work by Michael Dinkel: Attractively hand-coloured, all with fulsome inscriptions to 'Neil & Patricia'; the triptychs particularly have a strong early Edward Bawden feel to them; the 'alphabets' are not true alphabets - they read CHRISTMAS GREETINGS each letter is a pictorial initial - very pretty. He was outlived by his wife Emmy Dinkel-Keat, the bundle includes a few cards reproducing some of her work, but there are no original pieces. In very good to fine condition. 300 Ernest Michael Dinkel (1894-1983), was a painter, sculptor and designer. He attended the local technical college in Huddersfield, before moving to London. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1925, he studied art and architecture in France and Italy on the Owen Jones Travelling Scholarship. He taught at the RCA (1925-40), was Head of Stourbridge School of Art (1940-47), and Head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art (1947-1961). Emmy Keet (1908-2003), born in The Hague, was awarded a scholarship to the RCA, where she was influenced by her tutor Robert Austin, as well as Edward Johnston as Eric Ravilious. After a visit to Hungary in 1934, she began to teach embroidery and design, and subsequently married Michael Dinkel in 1941.
