2 ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE P3 (NOVEMBER 2013) INSTRUCTIONS AND INFMATION 1. This question paper consists of THREE sections. SECTION A: Essay (50) SECTION B: Longer Transactional Texts (30) SECTION C: Shorter Texts (Transactional, Referential, Informational) (20) 2. Answer ONE question from EACH section. 3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed. 4. Start EACH section on a NEW page. 5. Plan (such as key words, mind map, etc.), edit and proofread your work. The plan MUST appear BEFE the actual answer. 6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line through all planning. 7. Spend approximately 80 minutes on SECTION A, 40 minutes on SECTION B and 30 minutes on SECTION C. 8. Number each response as the topics are numbered in this question paper. 9. Write down the number and title of each question. Give your OWN title if one is not provided. NOTE: The title must NOT be considered when doing a word count. 10. Write neatly and legibly.

Write down the NUMBER and TITLE of your essay correctly, for example, 1.1 Empty promises Give your OWN title if your choice is either QUESTION 1.7.1 or QUESTION 1.7.2. Spend approximately 80 minutes on this section. 1.1 Empty promises [50] 1.2 Oh! What a day. NOTE: The words given in the topic MUST be included somewhere in the essay. 6 ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE P3 (NOVEMBER 2013) SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT QUESTION 2 Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks. The entire body of your response should be between 120 to 150 words in length (about 12 to 15 lines). Write down the number and the title of the text you have chosen, for example, 2.1 FRIENDLY LETTER. Pay special attention to format, language, register and audience. Spend approximately 40 minutes on this section. 2.1 FMAL LETTER A close friend has just lost an opportunity of a life time to further his/her sporting career studies follow his/her chosen career. He/she is disappointed. Write a letter to comfort him/her and advise him/her about other options to develop his/her talents. [30] 2.2 FMAL LETTER The Sports Committee of your school has not done much to organise enough sports activities for learners this year. Write a letter to the RCL (Representative Council of Learners) and express your dissatisfaction with this and explain how such activities would have benefited the learners. [30] 2.3 DIALOGUE You have failed to submit an assignment for one of your core subjects. The teacher confronts you about your supposed lack of commitment. Write out the conversation between the teacher and yourself. Use the dialogue format. [30] 2.4 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE A well-known sports personality/singer/television star recently visited your school. Write an article about this event for your school newspaper. Remember to provide a suitable headline. [30] TOTAL SECTION B: 30

(NOVEMBER 2013) ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE P3 7 SECTION C: SHTER TEXT (TRANSACTIONAL/REFERTIAL/INFMATIONAL) QUESTION 3 Choose ONE of the following topics and write a short text. The body of your response should be between 80 and 100 words in length (about 8 to 10 lines). Write the number and the heading of the text you have chosen, for example: 3.1 FACSIMILE (FAX) Spend approximately 30 minutes on this section. 3.1 FACSIMILE (FAX) You travelled by bus to another town on the last day of school before the holiday. You left your bag in the bus by mistake. Write a fax to the bus company in which you provide all the relevant details. Describe the bag and its contents. NOTE: Use the form in ANNEXURE A to write the fax. [20] 3.2 INSTRUCTIONS Your close friend has recently been appointed to captain your school s soccer/rugby/netball/tennis/cricket/hockey team for the first time. Write out a list of SEVEN (7) tips on how to exercise good and sound leadership, promote the building of team spirit in the sport he/she is to captain. [20] 3.3 DIARY ENTRY You have spent a holiday in a city with your cousin. Write a diary entry in which you reflect on your wonderful experiences. [20] TOTAL SECTION C: 20 GRAND TOTAL: 100
