Teenagers south of the Border who leave school before 17 in 2013 or 18 in 2015 will face fines and ASBOs if they do not go into training or take up an apprenticeship, Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, said yesterday. In your own words explain why the leaving age for school pupils is triggering a conflict in Britain. (2 marks) 7. What is the formula you would apply if you got a summarise question? (2 marks) 1. 2. 8. Answer the following question applying the summarise formula step by step:

A crisis in the teaching profession means that the government is investing in a massive advertising campaign to attract young graduates in to the profession. Many staff are simply at retirement age with not enough trainees to take their place, said Kathy Field, a spokesperson for the EIS, Scotland s largest teaching union, however graduates are choosing other career paths with higher wages that are perceived as being of a higher status. Some teacher have also come to the conclusion that the hectic pace of modern education plus the challenge of unruly pupils, means they are leaving the profession for other, easier alternatives. Summarise why there is a shortage of teachers in Scotland. (3 marks) (Remember to use your own words and give the number of points according to the number of marks!) 9. What is the formula for a context question? (3 marks) 10. Explain what the word heinous means and how the context of this word makes this clear. (3 marks) (Remember to apply the three steps of the formula!!) Even the most hardened detectives considered this a heinous crime. Every police force was involved in following every lead and checking the file of every violent criminal on record. Never in the history of Scotland had a murder trial attracted so much hysterical publicity. Headlines declared Black a heartless beast.

11. What is the formula for a link question? (4 marks) 12. Explain how the underlined sentence acts as a link in the writer s argument. (2 marks) When the sun sank down it was luxury to sit in the perfumed air and forget that there was any world but these enchanted islands. It was such ecstasy to dream, and dream till you got a bite. A scorpion bite. Then the first duty was to get up out of the grass and kill the scorpion; and the next to bathe the bitten place with alcohol and the next to resolve to keep out of the grass in future. 13. What is the formula for a word choice question? (4 marks)

14. The atmosphere in the following passage is depressing and gloomy. Explain how the writer s use of effective word choice helps to convey this atmosphere. (4 marks) Back in the main trench, I stood on the fire-step to watch the sky whitening. Sad and stricken the country emerged. I could see the ruined village below the hill and the leafless trees that waited like sentries up by Contalmaison. Down in the craters the dead water took a dull gleam from the sky. I stared at the tangles of wire and the leaning posts, and there seemed no sort of comfort left in life. My steel hat was heavy on my head while I thought how I d been on the leave last month. 15. What is the formula for a sentence structure question? (3 marks)

16. Show how the author s sentence structure indicates the suddenness of the shooting and also presents the last moments of the victim realistically. (4 marks) Bold wood had turned quickly, taken one of the guns and at once fired it at Troy. Troy fell. The distance apart of the two men was so small that the charge of shot did not spread in the least, but passed like a bullet into his body. He uttered a long guttural sigh- there was a contraction- an extension- then his muscles relaxed, and he lay still. 17. What is the formula for a contrast / change question? (6 marks) 18. What conflicting opinions do people hold about the recent popularity for keeping miniature dogs? (4 marks) The celebrity craze for miniature dogs has divided people in the way only animal rights issues have. Those who adore the pocket size pooches claim they the perfect pet for urban environments, needing only limited exercise and living space. Breeders of Chihuahuas and petite poodles view them as the pinnacle of canine beauty, They distil all the fine physical attributes of the great breeds into an exquisite, little package, cooed Nancy Baumer, a successful L.A. supplier. Vets

however are concerned by congenital defects caused by generations of in-breeding, and claim many of the dogs are ill treated, despite their high cost. These dogs look freakish and many suffer due to deformities. Sadly some folks see them as fashion accessories, not as living beings. Small dogs need exercise and care like any other pets. 19.
