Concert Band Directed by Mr. Robert Gavin Reverberations Brian Balmages Reverberations is a continuing effect; a repercussion. So naturally Reverberations starts with a two note motif. Throughout the piece this is played by various instruments such as horn, trumpet, saxophone, clarinets, etc. Towards the end of the piece the climax is carried by the brass instruments, it is loud and fast-paced and is sure to be a treat. Enjoy. Varney Sirleaf, horn, 10th grade Air for Band Frank Erickson Air for Band was written and composed by Frank William Erickson. This is a piece has a slow and soft tempo from beginning to end. Frank Erickson loved his students so much that he wrote a collection of his pieces including Air for Band to inspire students with music. Kayla Cedeno, flute, 9th grade Rhythm Machine Timothy Broege Rhythm Machine is an energetic piece composed by Timothy Broege. String Orchestra Directed by Mrs. Megan Gugliotta Jazz Band Directed by Mr. Matthew Christy Finale (from Symphony no. 5) Beethoven/Meyer Our concert piece Finale is an arrangement of the last movement of Beethoven symphony no.5. This piece is like many pieces that were made by Beethoven, they have a mysterious energy to it. At the same time it has a calming side to it. Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in December 17, 1770. Ludwig Van Beethoven was known for being a deaf German composer. He was a composer and a pianist. Rosalina Fernandez, 9 th grade, violin Milestones Miles Davis/arr. Paul Murtha Just the Way You Are Billy Joel/arr. Roger Holmes Chameleon Herbie Hancock/arr. Victor Lopez The Cold of Winter Soon He Newbold This is about the wonders of winter. The beginning of the songs starts with pizzicato. It sounds like the dropping of snow outside. As the song progresses, it's like the wind picks up and blows the snow about. By the end of the song, the wind calms down and it's back to the dropping of the snow. Jada Rose, 9 th grade, viola. Frosty s Caribbean Holiday arr. Ralph Ford This is a very festive piece that expresses the need to seek warmth in wintereven a snowman needs it! Take a trip away from the bitter cold of a New York winter and set yourself free somewhere warm. Allan Sun, grade 9, viola. Chamber Orchestra Directed by Mrs. Megan Gugliotta Trepak Trepak is composed by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky wrote the ballet/opera "The Nutcracker Suite," which was written from 1891-1892. Trepak is a Russian dance performed exclusively by men and features deep squats and split leaps. It is one of the most famous dances in Tchaikovsky s famous ballet. Angela Fiedler, grade 9, violin Ice Sculptures Soloists: Madison Bruning, Raquel Estrada Piano: Robert Gavin Ice Sculptures was written by Brian Balmages, who is a composer, conductor, and performer. This peace is based on the beautiful and elegant Ice Hotels that were made out of complete ice and snow. If you pay close attention, you could hear how the song tells a story, the construction of the ice hotels, the visitors coming to visit, and eventually, the melting of the hotels. The beautiful solo of the cello will captivate and "melt" you. Ice Sculptures is truly an extraordinary piece. Elizabeth Diaz, grade 9, violin A Christmas Festival A Christmas Festival, composed by Leroy Anderson, is a medley of familiar Christmas pieces. This composition transitions through numerous traditional Christmas tunes, such as Joy to the World, Jingle Bells, and O Come All Ye Faithful. Each song flows into the next, creating a strong feeling of holiday spirit. Madison Bruning, grade 11, cello
Wind Ensemble Directed by Mr. Robert Gavin Symphonic Prelude on Adeste Fideles Claude T. Smith This piece begins with a trumpet solo and the progresses to a trumpet duo, full brass choir, woodwind choir, and finally the complete band. This brilliant rhapsodic setting by Claude Smith will provide you with an exceptionally musical and "tasteful" selection. Bryant Rodriguez, clarinet, 10th grade Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring J. S. Bach/arr. Alfred Reed Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the last movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat ind Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), BWV 147, composed by Bach in 1716 and 1723. The song is often performed at wedding ceremonies and during Christian festive ceremonies, such as Christmas and Easter Sunday. Molly Siegel, horn, 12th grade Galop A. Ponchielli/arr. Larry Daehn Featured in the movie "Fantasia", "Galop" is a frenetic song whose sharp dynamic contrasts make the piece interesting. It moves at a breakneck pace, and it will leave you guessing throughout its entirety. We hope you have as much fun with this song as we have! Olivia Guh, clarinet, 12th grade Christmas Fantasia Satoshi Yagisawa The Wind Ensemble portion of the evening finishes strong with "Christmas Fantasia". This song is our favorite to perform, and it sounds the best out of all of the songs in our repertoire. Taking inspiration from a wide variety of sources including Christmas classics and famous classical compositions, "Christmas Fantasia" has something amazing for everyone. We hope you enjoy this song and rest of our concert.
