Mozart s Magic Flute A new production of a timeless masterpiece by Mozart. Tinus Spies (Stage director) & Willem Vogel (Conductor) Brooklyn Theatre has over the past 8 years established itself as a leading opera venue in SA. With two full opera productions per year an Operetta Gala as well as an Opera Gala with the GPO, local and international opera singers are featured in stylish productions to ensure the survival of opera in SA and cater to the tastes of opera lovers of all ages in Gauteng. The 2017 Salon Music production of La Traviata (Verdi), with 6 sold out performances, was an unequalled triumph. Three different productions of Mozart s Magic Flute has been been staged at Brooklyn Theatre and we now follow up with a brand new production in Jan 2018. The Magic Flute is prescribed for Matric Subject Music and is an ideal work to introduce young people to opera. With its varied themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, Shakespeare s classic tragedy OTHELLO remains as relevant to present day audiences as it ever was! Think Theatre s Othello has captivated school audiences for many years. Much cited as Shakespeare s greatest work, HAMLET centres on themes of death, betrayal, greed, murder and revenge. Often described as a typical Revenge Play, any careful study reveals it to be very much more. Does a good and purposeful life on earth triumph? Are vile and criminal acts always punished? Further, what is the purpose of our lives in the time we are given if decency has the same end as treachery? These questions are valid today in our homes, our schools and among our leaders.
Think Theatre s Hamlet received outstanding acclaim from audiences in 2017, at the Playhouse, Richard s Bay, Port Shepstone and Northern KZN; as well as at the University of Johannesburg and the Brooklyn Theatre Pretoria. / read more Multi award winning director, writer, teacher and actress, Clare Mortimer, directs some of KZN s finest actors to provide action packed performances which keep the audience enthralled... and help learners to understand and enjoy Shakespeare. With her wealth of experience as a Matric English teacher (both in private and Government schools) Clare has cleverly kept the productions to a manageable 2 + hours, closely following all the relevant themes the learners need to know. Audiences can be certain of complete productions, with full sets and costume, and the greatest of care given to the text. Expect to see a few familiar faces and some fresh ones in Hamlet 2018! NORMA (Bellini) An opera in 2 acts by Vincenzo Bellini This opera is a lyric tragedy and at the same time a leading example of the bel canto genre. Norma became justly famous as a result of the first act prayer for soprano - Casta Diva, sung by sopranos like Callas, Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé. After Salon Music s highly succesful productions of other bel canto operas like Rigoletto (Verdi) Don Pasquale (Donizetti), Martha (Flotow), La Fille du Regiment (Donizetti), Lucia die Lammermoor (Donizetti) and La Traviata (Verdi) among others, we are proud to present our first production of Bellini s Norma. Brooklyn Theatre diva, Ilze Coetzee, who sang several of the above leading roles will be singing the title role in Norma. Italian tenor Filippo Adami from Florence, takes on the role of Pollione. The role of Adalgisa will be sung by Teresa de Wit.
