Powama: Free play and exploration time on the drums. The Gaz: Play the I (closed), IV (open) and V (flip) on the drums, then have your piano fingers go for a walk, tapping the drum head all around. Listen for the call to finish the chord progression. Repeat the activity. Tideo: Children play on the rhythm of tideo. Shoo Turkey: Repeat activity from last week. Ask everyone to play and sing, Yes, ma am and, Soso after the teacher sings each phrase. Stand and remind them we will need our turkey wings, raise arms with elbows out, and our turkey tails, shake hips, so we can do the silly turkey dance around the drum circle for the next part of the song. When the A section returns, everyone will have a new instrument. All are welcome to free play until it s time to play, Yes, ma am again. The teacher surprises the children with a turkey puppet that makes turkey noises as he dances with the children on the B section. Repeat at least once. Rain On The Green Grass (From Rhymes In The Rain): Say the rhyme for them once. Ask them to play on the word, Rain and, Not on me in a short, quick, detached way, staccato. Repeat multiple times to prepare for glockenspiels. Activity Title Comments Movement for Holiday Show Performance Solo Singing Five Little Jingle Bells (New) (Holiday Show) Now My Bells Are Up Turkey Feathers Before class, put a long straight line of tape on the floor. This is used for the visual of where the children stand. Leave room behind the line to be able to gallop on the pretend stage. Five Little Jingle Bells: Have the parents sit at one side of the room to be the audience. (This should be close to the tape with children facing them) Have the kids stand on the tape (both feet need to touch the tape), and explain this is the front of the stage and if they turn around, that is the back of the stage where the horses will soon go for a gallop. Pass out Jingle bells to everyone. Bring out the puppet and say, We are going on a sleigh ride with Cocoa. You can also show the picture of the horses and sleigh. Teacher uses a rhythm stick, holding it horizontally, with five bells hanging from it. Cocoa holds on to one end of the stick. Sing, One little jingle bell fell in the snow and drop one of the bells after the word, Snow. Practice with the kids to drop their bell and pick it back up. During the chorus everyone follows you and Cocoa, galloping in a circle on the stage behind the line. Start the music! TIP: The teacher has a pocket or little bag with her for each bell she drops. Now My Bells Are Up: Follow directions provided by the words of the song. Sing it slowly the first time. The second time, wait for the children to sing at the end of the phrases, Up, down, town, head, shoulder, knee, bed. Parent Info: If they don t want to go up on stage at the open house, just stay with them at the front and they can get their bell wherever they are! We want this to be fun for them! It is important to be patient with them and let them have a good experience. Put up the felt turkey body and see if they can guess who this is and ask them what the problem is with the turkey. Explain that he is bare and shouldn t go outside like this. Sing the chorus of the song with everyone tapping the steady beat on their legs. Have them, Close their eyes for a big surprise and put a feather behind each child. Have the students take turns sharing their idea with everyone imitating until a new name is called Tideo: Sing the student s name as they strum the ukulele as the parent plays the C chord. Sing high and low on Tideo at the end of a verse. If it is a large class, do a shortened verse. If you have a ukulele with a low string, you can show them the highest and lowest strings as you sing high and low. Explain when they hear the music without the singing, they can make up their own gentle snowflake sounds. Try playing on Kon kon on any color bar they like. You can discuss if snowflakes are loud or soft and review piano and forte vocabulary. Ask them to play piano like the little snowflakes. Parent Tip: This is fun and a great activity to develop their musicianship as they experience phrasing, form, melodic and rhythmic changes moving their little gifts to the music. You can try adding a steady beat on your lowest instruments. See if they remember the word for fast in music, Allegro. Trepak: Pass out the little Holiday Gifts and let them know, next week they get to take one of them home. Listen for the accents Jump and lift your holiday friends in the air when you hear the accents. Bounce them side to side when it s not the accent music.
