DELAWARE MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION ALL-STATE ENSEMBLES GENERAL GUIDELINES DELAWARE ALL-STATE SENIOR BAND Flute, Piccolo, Soprano Clarinet, Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium (Baritone Horn), Tuba, String Bass (optional), Percussion (Snare Drum, Mallets, Timpani). Wind Instruments: 1. Play from memory the major scales to extreme ranges up to and including five (5) sharps and five (5) flats, at a minimum of quarter note = 144, using the standard rhythm of a quarter followed by 6 eighth notes per octave with consistent articulation. 2. Play the chromatic scale to extreme ranges in eighth notes at a minimum of quarter note = 144. 3. Perform solo from the official DMEA All-State Senior Band Required solo list for the 4. DELAWARE ALL-STATE JUNIOR BAND Flute, Soprano Clarinet, Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium (Baritone Horn), Tuba, Percussion (snare drum, mallets).

Wind Instruments: 1. Play from memory the major scales to extreme ranges, up to and including three (3) sharps and four(4) flats, at a minimum of qtr note = 120 using the standard rhythm of a quarter note followed by 6 eighth notes per octave. 2. Play the chromatic scale to extreme ranges, in eighth notes, at a minimum of qtr note = 120. 3. Play designated solo from the official DMEA All-State Junior Band required solo list. 4. Sight-read and play material selected by the Event Committee. Percussion Instruments: 1. All instruments: Solo from the DMEA All-State Junior Band Required Solo list for the 2. DELAWARE ALL-STATE JAZZ ENSEMBLE Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar / String Bass, Drum set, Vibraphone. If additional instrumentation is needed due to either demands of the literature or lack of doublers, students from the current year s All-State Senior Band will be solicited. Auditions will consist of the following: Wind instruments: 1. Play from memory the major scales to extreme ranges up to and including five sharps and five flats and the Blues Scales in the concert keys of Bb, C, Eb and F in eighth notes at a minimum speed of quarter note =120. 2. Play from memory the chromatic scale to extreme ranges in eighth notes at a minimum speed of quarter note = 120. 3. Perform the required Improvisation listing. Improvisation is Mandatory. 4. Sight Reading: materials from the jazz idiom (selected by Audition Panel).

Rhythm Instruments: 1. Bass, guitar and piano a. Play solo from the required solo list. b. Chords - demonstrate all basic chords - Major 7th, Dominant 7th, Minor 7th, Augmented 7th, and Diminished 7th. c. Perform the required Improvisation listing. Improvisation is mandatory. d. Sight reading materials from the jazz idiom as provided by the Audition Panel. Written progressions and written parts are included. 2. Drum Set a. Play solo from the required solo list. b. Sight reading - Play a jazz band part including all pertinent solo and ensemble figures and fills. For specific Jazz Band Requirements for a designated year, please see the DMEA website. Audition performances are rated by the adjudicators utilizing the All-State Assessment Rubrics. DELAWARE ALL-STATE SENIOR CHOIRS (Women and Mixed) NOTE: Anyone auditioning for Soprano or Alto voices will automatically be considered for both Senior Women s and Senior Mixed Choirs. Odd seats are assigned to Women s Choir, Even to Mixed Choir. Auditions are held in the following categories: -Soprano I -Soprano II -Alto I -Alto II -Tenor I -Tenor II -Bass I -Bass II 1. A required solo selected by the All-State Senior Choirs Committee. 2. A performance in a mixed voice quartet (SATB) 3. A sight-reading exercise, which is selected by the Audition Panel. It consists of five (5) measures in the key of either C, G, or F Major; and it includes an accidental, as well as a dotted rhythm in treble or bass clef. NOTE: The applicant s total score, which is equal to the sum average of the scores for the two performances, is the basis for his/her rank among all applicants. The cut-off score for eligibility in either Senior Choir is determined by the Committee using the highest scores for each category (Soprano I, Bass I, etc.). The size of both Choirs is determined by the All-State Senior Choirs Committee in cooperation with the guest conductor and is based on the requirements of the selected literature. The vocal solo and quartet performances are rated by the adjudicators using the All-State Assessment Rubrics.

DELAWARE ALL-STATE JUNIOR CHORUS Auditions are held in the following categories: -Soprano -Alto -Tenor -Baritone 1. A required solo (a capella) as posted on the website 2. A performance in a mixed voice quartet (SATB) as posted on the website 3. A four (4) measure sight-reading exercise, which is selected by the Audition Panel. NOTE: The audition consists of a vocal solo and performance in a mixed voice quartet. The applicant s total score, which is equal to the sum average of the scores, is the basis for his/her rank among all applicants. The cut-off score for eligibility in the Junior Chorus is determined by the Committee using the highest scores for each category (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone). The size of the Chorus is determined by the All-State Junior Chorus Committee in cooperation with the guest conductor and in terms of the literature to be performed. The vocal solo and quartet performances are rated by the adjudicators using the All-State Assessment Rubrics. DELAWARE ALL-STATE ORCHESTRA Scales 1. All string candidates for All-State Orchestra are expected to play memorized major scales with key signatures including those up to 5# s and 5b s including C Major. Violins are required to play three-octave scales for G, Ab, A, and Bb. Violas and cellos are required to play threeoctave scales for C, Db, D and Eb. All other violin and viola scales are in two octaves. 2. Basses are required to play two-octave scales for E, F, G and Ab. All other bass scales may be played for one octave. 3. Harps are required to play three-octave scales in octaves, hands apart. All scales will be performed using the standard eighth note followed by six sixteenth notes per octave rhythm, one octave per bow, at a minimum tempo of quarter note = 60 bpm.
