4 LEARNING AT THIRD STREET Third Street offers individual, duo and small group lessons on a wide variety of instruments, voice and dance. Supplemental classes are also offered in musicianship, theory, and ensembles to enhance our students musical journey. Our class offerings provide beginning to advanced study through all ages and levels. LESSONS AND CLASSES INDIVIDUAL LESSONS (30, 45 & 60 min.) are geared towards students who are ready for one-on-one lessons. All instruments are offered through Traditional methods and a few are offered through the Suzuki approach. DUO LESSONS (30 & 45 min.) are an effective way to start learning a new instrument with a friend. Lessons consist of two students of a similar age and skill level in a supportive and encouraging environment as students help each other learn and grow. GROUP LESSONS (45 min.) are for our youngest learners (generally ages three and four) and for our first and second year members of our partner s program (see page 19 for more details) who are just getting started on their instruments. Lessons take place in small, supportive groups of three to five students of a similar age and skill level per teacher.

5 FLEX PASS Want to learn a new instrument but don t know when you ll have the chance to fit lessons into your busy schedule? Take advantage of our FLEX Pass! FLEX Passes are available in 4 or 8 session packages, giving you the opportunity to schedule classes throughout the school year when you have time to take them. CLASSES Third Street offers a variety of classes that engage and supplement our students learning experience. Classes range from music theory and composition to improvisation and sound recording. Students enrolled in lessons receive a discount on classes. Refer to our website for more information about suggested ages to begin instruction. ENSEMBLES Students interested in performing in groups with their friends should sign up for an ensemble! Participating in an ensemble is an integral part of learning to become a musician and artist. Third Street s ensembles cross-departments to create orchestras, bands, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, choirs, rock bands and more. Students enrolled in lessons receive a discount on ensembles. A full listing of ensembles can be found on page 14. HOW WE TEACH - Traditional and Suzuki-Based Approaches TRADITIONAL-BASED LEARNING of an instrument is generally for students who have already developed fine motor skills and are able to simultaneously focus on multiple facets of learning an instrument. This includes the ability to listen, read notes and the physical coordination of handling an instrument. Traditional methods are generally age-appropriate for children five and older, depending on the instrument, and uses a customized repertoire based on the student s needs and interests. SUZUKI-BASED LEARNING is recommended for all ages and abilities. This approach, developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, is based on how children learn their native language exposure, action and repetition. Pieces are learned by ear and played from memory, and lessons are paired with a weekly repertoire class that immerses students with others at their skill and age level. Core components of this approach are parental involvement and weekly musicianship class. Note reading is taught at the appropriate time. This approach is available for students taking lessons in strings, piano or flute. Interested in learning which approach is better for you? Contact Student Services at 212-777-3240 ext. 17 or info@thirdstreetmusicschool.org for more information.
