Director s Welcome Welcome to Duneira s sixth year of events, and our Autumn program which runs from March to May. Stuart Stoneman s vision was to create a cultural centre that provided people with the opportunity to relax, learn and be inspired. His philanthropic model was informed by the great American collections; Stoneman s position in Australian society was ahead of its time and is still unique today. Our heritage garden, c.1872, is of national significance, even so, it does not overshadow the rich history of the previous owners of this property. All were brilliant visionaries whose legacy lives on in this most unusual property. Also of significance is our antiquarian book collection, our persian rugs, antique furniture and Stoneman s personal and eclectic art collection which includes a Rembrandt, a Rodin and a Warhol! Our events aim to be educational and inspiring. One can hear specialist guest speakers in an intimate setting and have the opportunity to engage with them. Our concerts showcase the very best performers in their fields, held in the intimate chamber music setting in which the Menuhins performed. There are adult education classes in painting, photography, meditation and languages. For children we have the GATEWAYS program and our language scholarship program at Woodend Primary School. Private groups are welcome by special arrangement with tours tailored to suit. You re sure to discover something new at Duneira! Dr Jacqueline Ogeil About Stoneman and His Vision Duneira s seventh owner, Stuart Rusden Stoneman, was born in Castlemaine in 1927. He was the only son of local businessman Thomas Stoneman and became the third generation of the Stoneman family to work in the grocery industry. Motivated by a grand vision and study undertaken overseas in 1950, Stuart returned to Castlemaine and implemented self-service grocery stores eventually developing the business into the successful Stoneman s Supermarket chain with additional stores in Bendigo, Echuca and Ballarat. Upon his death in 2002, Duneira was bequeathed to the care of The S.R. Stoneman Foundation to manage for the benefit of local and broader communities. Stoneman s vision for Duneira was to maintain and preserve Duneira, to open it to the public, on a smaller scale but in the spirit of the Huntington Collection in California, and for it to continue to be a place where people have the opportunity to learn and relax in an aesthetically cultivated environment; to enable interested individuals and groups to have access to the property; to view and examine the various collections and attractions; and in certain instances to enjoy suitable social and other functions.

Literary Events On Good Living Street Tim Bonyhady, author In 1900 Vienna was one of the most exciting places to live in the world. In Good Living Street he follows the lives of three generations of women in his family in an intimate account of fraught relationships, romance, and business highs and lows. In 1938, his family fled Vienna for a small flat in a harbourside suburb of Sydney, taking with them the best private collection of art and design to escape the Nazis.
