Ref No.: 93-018 Date: February 15, 1993 CATHODE RAY TUBES NOTICE NO. 1 To: Manufacturers of Cathode Ray Tubes and Products Incorporating Cathode Ray Tubes Subject: Publication of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 228-92, "Cathode Ray Tubes" The Canadian Standards Association is pleased to announce the publication of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No 228-92, "Cathode Ray Tubes", as a National Standard of Canada. This Standard was published in December 1992 and supersedes CSA Standard C22.2 No 228-1988. Background and Rationale The Electronic Industries Association (EIA), with support from manufacturers, requested that CSA and UL requirements for cathode ray tubes be harmonized and combined. As a result, a new joint Standard was published, which harmonizes and consolidates the requirements of the existing CSA and UL Standards for cathode ray tubes. Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 228-92 is the joint CSA/UL Standard that was prepared by CSA, ULI and the cathode ray tube industry. This Standard was formally approved by the Technical Committee on Consumer and Commercial Products and the Standards Steering Committee on Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. The Standard has also been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada and will be submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for publication as an American National Standard. This Binational Standard contains the following new requirements: (a) (b) (c) Conditioning of CRT's before tests. High energy test (Guillotine) is added for laminated face CRT's only. Glass throw criteria is tightened to allow smaller pieces/total mass of glass thrown permitted. Page 1 of 4 TILLB1/LB009/1/dw
Page 2 of 4 (d) (e) (f) Missile impact test extended to all CRT's larger than 160 mm bulb diagonal (except laminated types). Small CRT's between 76 mm and 160 mm in bulb diagonal are covered, using smaller ball and impact energy levels. Rebuilt CRT's are included, with reduced tests due to previous investigation of the original CRT. Scope Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 228 applies to cathode ray tubes (CRTs) intended for use as components in apparatus designed to be used in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. The Standard is intended to apply only to those CRTs whose face forms part of the enclosure for the apparatus. It contains requirements for the face of the CRT to ensure sufficient strength to form part of the overall enclosure. A CRT covered by this Standard is intended for use in dry locations and is intended to be installed in a cabinet so designed that it will protect the various parts of the apparatus against mechanical or other injury to which they may be exposed under ordinary conditions and protect the user against hazards. The Standard contains requirements for a CRT of more than 76 mm diagonal which incorporates an implosion protection system that provides protection against the hazards of particles expelled forward beyond the face. Effective Date - One month from date of notice. Direction Customers currently holding CSA Certification of cathode ray tubes are not required to take any action. For new submissions, the requirements of the subject standard will apply. Customers who wish to obtain Certification of cathode ray tubes to the new requirements may make an application at any time. Information on available Certification programs for evaluation and Certification of cathode ray tubes is given in the attached Appendix. Cathode ray tubes Certified to Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No 228-92 will be listed under the following CSA Product Classifications: 2221 04 - CATHODE RAY TUBES - Implosion Protected TILLB1/LB009/2/dw
