American Chemical Society (ACS) style. Taken from The ACS Style Guide: Effective Communication of Scientific Information 3 rd edition. Citing References in text may be done three ways: Superscript numbers outside punctuation. Oscillation in the reaction for benzaldehyde with oxygen was reported previously. 1 Italic numbers in parentheses inside punctuation. (6). The mineralization of TCE by pure culture of an oxidizing organism has been reported Author name and year in parentheses inside punctuation. (author-date system) The primary structure of this enzyme has been determined (Mehne, 2010). In all three ways, the author s name may be used in the sentence. In such cases, in the authordate system, place only the year in parentheses. The syntheses described by Bloomberg take advantage of carbohydrate topology. 2 Moore (3) reported oscillation in the reaction of benzaldehyde with oxygen. According to Nierste (2010), drug release is controlled by varying the hydrolytic stability. When numerical citations, begin with 1 and number consecutively throughout paper. However, if a reference is repeated, do not give it a new number, use original reference number. If a reference has two authors, give both names joined with and. If more than two authors, give first name listed followed by et al. Do not use a comma before et al and always use a period after al. Reference Lists: Books: Include author or editor names, title, publisher, city and year of publication.list authors names with last name first and initials for first and middle names. Separate multiple authors with semicolons. Some publications list the first ten authors followed by a semicolon and et al.
Cotton, F.A. Basconi, J.; Lin, P.B. Brown, J.P., III; Levine, S.M. Schafer, F.W., Jr.; Hassell, T. L. Periodicals: Include author names, abbreviated journal title, year, volume number (if any), and initial page of cited article (complete page span is recommended). In page spans, use all digits closed up with no commas or spaces. 1376-1382 2-15 Author(s) (multiple authors separated by;). Abbrev. Title. Year, Volume, inclusive pagination. Note: The journal Biochemistry is an exception. Consult this journal s instructions for correct format. Article titles do not have quotations and end with a period or question mark if that is part of the title. Capitalization follows that of the original publication. Abbreviate journals according to Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI) Appendix 14-1, and italicize it. One-word journal names are not abbreviated. No punctuation is added, so a period will be there only with an abbreviated word. If the journal name has changed, use the abbreviation of the journal at the time the article was published. Provide each reference in its entirety (even if same author is cited). Do not use ibid or idem. Special Situations: You may use Beilstein references as periodical references. Foreign language journals may be cited either in original language or English translation. When citing an article in the English translation of a foreign language journal, include reference to original article, if possible, and use a semicolon to separate the two citations. 45 (5), Tarasov, Y.I.; Kochikov, I.V.; Kaple, D.; Vogy, N.
