rogram notes articles as commissioned by the atrick Marsh Middle School Seventh Grade Band, Sun rairie, WI, and their director Chris Gleason Ideas or the comosition came rom the students themselves, and it as decided the iece ould sho in musical terms the transormation o the states o matter rom SLID to LIQID and ultimately to GAS A rimary musical theme (irst stated in measures 630 by lo brass and oodinds) occurs throughout the ork, but is transormed ith each statement in keeing ith the state o matter that is being ortrayed The oening segment is very rigid and densesounding, conveying the sense o matter as a solid The ace quickens a bit at measure 31 and the music is more luid and lyrical, describing a liquid state The main melody is assed rom horns and saxes to the trumets next, and inally a harmonized version ith the ull ensemble at measure 58 The transormation to the gas state o matter begins at measure 70, as the ace o the music gradually seeds u urther and the individual notes become shorter in duration until an excited gaseous state is reached at measure 76! rom there, musical motis are bounced around rom section to section until reaching the inal maestic segment, comleting the cycle and relecting on the entire rogression o matter through its various stages erormance notes It s imortant that the layers understand the overall ormal shae o the iece as it deicts the various states o matter This ill require smooth transitions and raid shits in style beteen a legato, sustained style and a lighter and more detached style o laying The segment beteen measures 70 and 76 should rogress very gradually rom longer sustained notes to lighter and more raid atterns Each o these indeterminate blocks o time should be cued by the conductor and can last 10 or more seconds Exeriment! layers should try to not match their neighbors, but rather lay indeendently so that the overall eect is one o overlaing and gradually evolving texture changes It s also imortant to start this section very sotly and to crescendo gradually as the intensity builds to measure 76 Starting in measure 80 layers are given three notes to chose beteen, but should ollo the rhythms and dynamics exactly The three notes may be layed in any random order, and layers should kee moving rom itch to itch rather than the laying the rhythms all on a single note This section (measures 8087) should eel light and airy The use o susended ine bottles at measure 76 is otional, and may be substituted ith any tye o metallic or glass sound Exeriment ith various beaters (rubber mallets, ood sticks, triangle beaters, etc) to ind the most eective sound The eect should be light and tinkly as the gas state is being ortrayed I using glass bottles o some sort, exeriment ith varying amounts o ater in each bottle to achieve dierent sounds and itches ABT THE CMSER Michael Seeney is currently Director o Band ublications or Hal Leonard Cororation in Milaukee, WI one o the largest ublishers o rinted music in the orld Michael is directly resonsible or the develoment, roduction, recording and marketing o ne ublications or school bands In addition, he contributes as a comoser and arranger in all instrumental areas, and is articularly knon or his riting at the younger levels or concert band and azz Since oining the comany in 198, Hal Leonard has ublished over 500 o his comositions and arrangements Mr Seeney is a 1977 graduate o Indiana niversity (Bloomington) here he earned a degree in Music Education, and also studied comosition ith Bernard Heiden, ohn Eaton and Donald Erb rior to orking or Hal Leonard he as a band director in hio and Indiana, orking ith successul concert, azz and marching rograms at all levels rom elementary to high school A inner o multile ASCA aards, his Ancient Voices (199) and Imerium (199) are eatured in the acclaimed Teaching Music Through erormance series by GIA ublications ther comositions such as Black orest verture (1996), The orge o Vulcan (1997) and Distant Thunder o the Sacred orest (003) have become stales in the reertoire or middle school bands He has received commissions ranging rom middle school and high school bands to the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Canadian Brass His orks aear on numerous state contest lists and his music is regularly erormed throughout the orld Michael is also in demand as a clinician and conductor or honor bands and estivals Michael resides north o Milaukee here he enoys ishing and laying the bodhrán
