ABSTRACT This thesis entitled Macbeth s Motives behind His Ambition to be The King of Scotland Revealed in Shakespeare s Macbeth, presents the ambition of the main character as his motive to be the King of Scotland in Shakespeare s Macbeth. This analysis used qualitative descriptive study. Qualitative research has its roots in social science and is more concerned with understanding why people behave as they do. Meanwhile, in technique of data collection, the writer used library research method. Library research method was used to gain references dealing with the object of analysis. While approaches used here are structural approach and psychological approach. Structural approach was used to analyze the structural elements of this Drama, like character and conflict. Psychological approach was used to analyze the motives behind ambition of Macbeth through his behavior. The result of the analysis shows that the protagonist in this drama is Macbeth. Macbeth is described as a loyal, brave, curious, unstable, ambitious, cruel, loving, doubtful, fearful, anxious, manipulative, provocative and arrogant. Macbeth s character has several changes in his life from the beginning until the end of this play. He changes from good sides into the evil sides. Macbeth belongs to round dynamic, since Macbeth has more than one traits. As the protagonist, Macbeth also experiences two kinds of conflict, namely internal conflict (Macbeth against himself) and external conflict (Macbeth against person). Macbeth s internal conflict happens when Macbeth is faced by problems, such as hesitating to determine what he has to do, anxiety which leads him into evil and ambition that is supposed to be reached. At the last, Macbeth decides to finish his own purpose but unfortunately he cannot take it. Macbeth s external conflicts happens when Macbeth is encountered by problems, such as people around Macbeth who do not want Macbeth to be King of Scotland and even Lady Macbeth as his wife and Banquo as his friend who support Macbeth. Those external conflicts lead Macbeth becomes insane. Finally Macbeth s motives behind his ambition are described when he becomes Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth thought that the prophecy is pretty much sure. Macbeth starts to realize his plan with some motives behind his ambition to be the King of Scotland. Macbeth does stimulus and learned motives to reach his ambition. Stimulus motives of Macbeth when he explores his bravery to reach his ambition. Learned motives of Macbeth when he wants to get recognition from Lady Macbeth even by himself. Macbeth also has some aspects of hierarchy of needs such as Safety Needs, Needs of Love, Affection and Belongingness, Needs for Esteem instead of his ambition. Safety Needs is when Macbeth is going to kill all of his enemy when Macbeth is threatened by them. Needs of Love, Affection and Belongingness is when Macbeth is threatened by his confusion and his enemy, he always shares to Lady Macbeth.
