4. REDING Read the text below about a man who is not happy with his job. Then read the sentences on the next page. re the sentences true (T) or false (F)? It s nine o clock in the evening. I ve been in my office all day and I m feeling very tired. I ve just finished answering the last email of the day. It was a request for a sponsorship from a local football team. Sorry, but we haven t got any money to invest at the moment, is our answer. I feel bad about refusing to support them as we have done for the last five years but my boss says that we have to find other marketing ideas. I don t like my job anymore. I ve felt depressed about it for quite a long time now and it s clear to me that the moment has come to make a decision about what I want to do. I ve worked for this company since 2003 and I know everything about my job. This should be an advantage, but I ve begun to find it more and more boring. I m a marketing manager and this is what I studied at university so I should be pretty pleased about it. nd I was, until one morning six months ago when I woke up without any energy. ll I wanted was to stay in bed and not go to work. t first I thought I was just a bit tired, but now I know it s something more serious than that. I need a change and I need it now. But what type of change? We spend so much time at work that it influences our life enormously. Feelings are not important in my job, only money, sales and competition. This is not what I want. I ve thought about this for a while and I now realise that what I really want to do is work with disabled children again. When I was at university I had a part-time job with a company which organised events for children and teenagers with disabilities. It was great fun. We took kids in wheelchairs to rock concerts, we asked actors to read books to blind children and a lot more. It was great seeing what pleasure these simple things gave to these young people who had a more difficult life than their friends. When I finished my degree I decided I wanted a serious career and I accepted the job with the company I currently work for. Was it the right thing to do? It probably was at the time. But it isn t anymore and I have to find the courage to give it up and start all over again. 8

e.g. The writer is still working. T 1 In the morning he answered an email from a local football team. 2 He isn t happy about saying no to the sponsorship. 3 His boss is not pleased with his work. 4 He thinks his job is no longer interesting. 5 He is very confident about his job because he has worked in it for a long time. 6 He studied marketing at university. 7 He wants to change his job. 8 He thinks working with disabled children isn t serious enough. 9 Disabled children find it difficult to make friends. 10 He thinks it wasn t a good idea to accept the marketing job. /10 marks 9
