Obituary, The Post Journal, Jamestown, New York, Wednesday January 3, 1968 Ralph E. Waite, Dies At 93; Prominent Mason Ralph E. Waite, 93, of 630 Windsor St., prominent in Masonic circles, died at 6:40 P.M. Tuesday (Jan 2, 1968) at the Fenton Park Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 17, 1874, in the Town of Poland, the son of Horace G. and Mary Frederick Waite, the eldest of seven sons in the family. Mr. Waite attended school in Kennedy and Randolph and moved to Jamestown with his family in 1886. He was a salesman for the cigar industry for most of his life. He worked for Tinkham Brothers for 14 years and at one time owned a cigar store on West Third Street near Main Street. He organized the Hill-Waite Wholesale Co., in Rochester. For 10 years prior to his retirement in 1956, he traveled for Arbuthnot-Stephenson Wholesale Dry Goods Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member and past president of the Jamestown Shrine Club; a member of Jamestown Consistory; Western Sun Chapter; Royal Arch Masons; Jamestown Commandery, Knights Templar; Damascus Temple, Shrine of Rochester; and the Rochester Craftsman Lodge. He also was an honorary member of Ismailia Temple, Shrine, of Buffalo. Mr. Waite maintained a summer home at Maple Springs for many years and was president of the Maple Springs Association. He was member of the Rescue Engine Co., of the old Volunteer Fire Dept., and was past president of the United Commercial Travelers. Active in politics in his early years he was appointed deputy index clerk of the Assembly at Albany under Governor Hughes serving from 1906 to 1915. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Caroline M. Waite whom he married in 1955; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys W. Putnam, Jamestown; two granddaughters, Mrs. Charles S. Williams, Ithaca; and Mrs. Laverne M. Magnuson, Jamestown; two great-granddaughters, Marsha P. Williams, a student at the University of Denver; and Tracey Ann Williams, Ithaca; one great-grandson, A-1c Jerry L. Magnuson with the U.S. Air Force in Arizona; a brother, Raymond F. Waite, Jamestown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Myrtie L. Ancestors of Ralph Emerson Waite page 2 Funeral services will be at 1 P.M. Friday in Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. John L. Schmidt, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received by the family from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home, where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. Thursday. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the memorial fund of First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown or the Jamestown Shrine Club building fund. Obituary, Jamestown Post Journal Myrtie Waite, Resident Here 61 Years, Dies Mrs. Myrtie L. Waite, 77, of 630 Windsor Street, a resident of Jamestown for more than 60 years, died at 6 P.M. Thursday in W.C.A. Hospital. Mrs. Waite, whose warm and friendly personality, her devotion to her family and interest in community life had endeared her to an exceedingly wide circle of friends through the years, suffered a stroke on New Year's Eve as she was preparing tho attend the annual Shrine ball at which she and her husband, Ralph E. Waite, president of the Jamestown Shrine Club, were to have been the honor guests. her recovery had been expected until she suffered a second stroke Sunday, when she was removed to the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Waite observed their 56th wedding anniversary last August. Mrs. Waite was born in Frewsburg, Feb 12, 1874, the daughter of Edward and Louise Nelson Coe. She was married to Mr. Waite on August 26, 1895. A resident of Jamestown for 61 years, Mrs. Waite attended the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Shrine and Scottish Rite Auxiliaries. Surviving besides her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Leo D. Putnam of Jamestown; two granddaughters, Mrs. Charles Williams of Harmon-on-Hudson, and Mrs. LaVerne Magnuson of Jamestown, and two great grandchildren, Jerry Lee Magnuson and Marcia Williams. Funeral services will be held from the Powers Funeral Home at 1:30 P.M. Monday. Rev. Gilbert F. Van Bever, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. She had been a member and a former secretary of United Methodist Women of the church. A past president of the Auxiliary of Jamestown Consistory, York Rite, and Jamestown Shrine Auxiliary, she was also a member and past president of Mecca chapter, Order of Eastern Star; and past president of Mecca Club. Other memberships were American Association of Retired Persons and Ellington Garden Club. She was a former member of Warner Home Board and the ways and means committee of WCA Hospital. Surviving are two daughters: Sue P. Magnuson of the Alton Place address and Barbara P. Williams of Ithaca; a grandson, Jerry L. Magnuson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two granddaughters; Marcia P. and Tracey A. Williams, both of Denver, Colo., and two great-grandsons. Besides her second husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo D. Putnam. The funeral will be at 11 A.M. Tuesday in Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Frances K. Waite of Boston, Jack MacLaughlin received an obit from Barbara Cessna, Researcher at the Fenton History Center, Jamestown, N.Y. presumably from the JAMESTOWN JOURNAL. It was in a file from the Henderson Lincoln Funeral Home Records at the museum. Unfortunately it was not the obituary that Jack was searching for, but he was kind enough to send a copy for publishing here. September 30, 1929 Horace G. Waite, a veteran of the Civil war, died this morning at 5 o'clock at the home, 15 Newland Avenue, aged 82 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. May F. Waite; six sons, Ralph E. Clair J. Forest B. Reid A. and Raymond F. Waite, all of this city Jamestown, N.Y., and Maurice P. Waite of Corry, PA. a sister Mrs. Ida Simpson of Falconer; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Waite was born at Randolph, NY Aug. 29, 1847, and had been a resident of Jamestown for 45 years. He enlisted in Company G. 13th New York Heavy Artillery, on Aug. 25, 1864, and was discharged on June 21, 1865. He was a member of James M. Brown post, G.A.R.
