SCENIC PRODUCTION POSITIONS 25

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Scenic Designer PRODUCTION Descriptin: Interprets the prductin and designs the physical visual elements f stage, settings and prps; cllabrates with directr and ther designers. Prerequisites: TPA 3060C Scene Design fr Theatre I and a previus Assistant Scenic Design psitin. The Scenic Designer is expected t attend the fllwing events and turn in the materials listed fr each. Designers shuld cnsult with their faculty advisrs n a regular basis and advisrs MUST attend all design meetings. If a particular prductin dictates materials different frm thse listed belw, the faculty advisr must apprve the change/substitutins. Failure t attend all required events and/r turn in all required materials will result in a lwering f the grade fr the assignment (see syllabus and rubric fr Theatre Participatin classes) and multiple absences r missing materials may result in the designer being pulled frm the prductin. Remval frm the assignment can lead t departmental prbatin r remval frm the prgram. Requirements The fllwing list is rughly sequential except that several f these respnsibilities will happen at the same time with different crews. DESIGN PHASE Design Advisr must be invlved in every step f the prcess and must apprve all wrk befre it is presented t anyne else. This must be dne far enugh in advance t make sure deadlines can still be met even if changes are required. This means yur ACTUAL deadlines are earlier than thse listed. Read the script fr verall stry and theme. Think abut it as if yu were directing the play. On a secnd reading take nte f the specific physical needs f each scene. Determine research needs. Cnsult the prductin calendar and nte all due dates. It is imprtant that yu meet these dates because it affects the wrk f s many ther peple. Failing t meet yur due dates causes the entire prcess t get backed up and many peple will need t adjust their schedules because f yu. Meeting deadlines will als affect yur grade fr this prject. Once yu begin t wrk in the prfessinal wrld yu will want t be knwn fr meeting deadlines designers are ntrius fr nt ding s and having this skill will make prductin managers want t re-hire yu ften. Discuss spending prcedures with the technical directr. Persnally supply all materials needed fr sketches and renderings. Yu and yur assistant shuld attend all design and prductin meetings. Make sure the Stage Manager has all f yur current cntact infrmatin. 26

Obtain a current grundplan f the theatre frm yur faculty design advisr r thrugh the prductin shared drive. Prepare fr the Design Meeting. At this meeting yu shuld be prepared t discuss the play as a play nt just hw many entrances and sfas are needed. This may lead yu t whle new areas f research that are needed. NOTE: Yur design advisr shuld be at all meetings yu have with the Directr. Be sure t cpy yur design advisr n all emails between yu and yur Directr. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS Research as necessary and discuss with yur faculty design advisr. Draft preliminary grund plan and prepare a preliminary white mdel and/r sketches r virtual mdels. Yu must shw these t yur faculty design advisr at least ne full day BEFORE yu present them t yur directr. After the meeting with the Directr, discuss changes with yur faculty supervisr. Make design revisins as necessary. Nte that it may take several versins until yu get t a design that slves the Directr s needs and has an artistic integrity. Again, yu must discuss all revisins with yur supervisr BEFORE yu present them t yur directr. Begin a furniture plt. Identify which pieces we have, which are t be rented r brrwed, and which will need t be built. Typically, yu and yur assistant will be respnsible fr finding all furnishings. Yu must cnsult with yur supervisr befre making any purchases. Once a white mdel r clr rendering is apprved, begin t draft the shw in the fllwing suggested rder: Plate: Drawing: (1) 1/4 grund plan with masking (2) Centerline sectin (3) Cmpsite plans/ furniture plans scene by scene if necessary The fllwing drawings may/will prbably need multiple plates; adjust numbers as needed: (4) Platfrming fr main deck(s) (5) Frnt elevatins f large wall surfaces starting SR and cntinuing arund set. (6) Frnt elevatins f additinal masking r secndary walls. (7) Additinal scenic items in rder f largest t smallest (8) Backdrps and cycs (9) Built furniture pieces (10) Built prperties 27

(11) ½ paint elevatins Additinal drawings may be needed, depending upn the nature f the design. The idea is t prduce drawings in a systematic and cmplete manner, wrking frm largest t smallest. All drawings MUST be shwn t yur advisr 72 hurs (3 days) befre they are due t the technical directr. This gives yu time t revise, clarify, r redraw yur plates as necessary. Remember that the better yur drawings are, the better yu lk. Yu may need t make further revisins and clarificatins after meeting with the TD. Nte that initial drawings due dates shuld include platfrming, walls and any large scenic elements. The secnd set f drawings includes any remaining smaller items that need t be cnstructed. These dates allw the TD time t cst ut the shw bth fr materials and cnstructin time. Nte that drawings submitted after these dates may r may nt be cnstructed r may be changed depending upn the cst ut. Revise drawings as necessary t meet budget. Discuss build schedule with the TD and yur advisr. Set a meeting t discuss/negtiate masking with the Lighting Designer and faculty supervisrs. This is smething that is ften put ff but it is crucial t the Lighting Designer that he/she knws early n what backstage lighting psitins are available t them. Obviusly this meeting must happen befre their plts are due. Build final clr mdel. Yur mdel must be shwn t yur advisr 48 hurs befre shwing it t yur Directr. Set a meeting as early as pssible with the Directr, SM, ASMs, and Prp Master t discuss each and every prp in detail and hw it will be used. At this pint yu shuld prvide the Prp Master with a detailed listing f set dressings. Yu and yur assistant shuld g thrugh prp strage t see what dressings and prps are usable. Additinally, yu shuld discuss what ther theatres in twn might have that wuld als extend yur budget. As prps are added in rehearsal, be sure yu find ut the same infrmatin and watch fr prp use during the run-thrughs that yu attend. Attend the first rehearsal/read thrugh with the cast. It is traditinal fr designers t make design presentatins at this rehearsal. Yu will briefly shw research and explain the design. Talk in general terms. Nte that this is nt the time t present every single piece f research yu have lked at. This presentatin usually runs 5 minutes r s. Select practical lighting fixtures fr the set and get them t the Master Electrician as sn as pssible s that they can be repaired r rewired if necessary. Yu will need t begin lking fr furniture pieces as early as pssible. Because f the UCF purchasing prcedures yur advisr r the TD will need t purchase mst f these items with the University credit card. Yur advisr will need t pre-apprve all furniture pieces even if yu use yur wn mney and are reimbursed afterward. Create paint elevatins in 1/2 scale. These need t be dne and apprved by yur advisr at least ne week befre paint calls s materials can be purchased as necessary and the Scenic Artist can schedule calls. Yur elevatins need t als be apprved by the Directr. 28

Schedule a meeting with the ther designers t discuss and lk at each ther s clr palettes. Prevent a prblem at this stage. Attend a run thrugh t watch fr ptential difficulties r prblems. BUILD PERIOD Yu need t stp by the shp daily and answer questins the TD r ATD r Master Carpenter may have. If yu see anything that needs t be altered discuss that with the TD and he/she will discuss it with the shp staff. Yu shuld als check with the Scenic Artist daily t be sure their questins are answered and that prcesses are prceeding in the right directin. Read and respnd t all reprts as necessary Attend scheduled Shps Meeting in the Scene Shp. TECHNICAL AND DRESS REHEARSALS Take cnstructin, paint, prp and dressing ntes. Ntes shuld be discussed each night during the pst rehearsal prductin meeting. Type and distribute t yur advisr, TD, and crew heads first thing the next mrning s that all knw what needs t be dne. Take cmplete ntes every night even if yu gave the nte the previus day. Each set f ntes shuld be a cmplete set f ntes and nt rely n ntes given previusly. Stp by the shp early in the next wrk call and answer any questins that may have cme up. It is als a gd idea t give a cpy f the ntes t the Directr. Nte: If yu have nt seen it n stage during a tech rehearsal then d nt add it at the last mment. There shuld be NOTHING NEW t see fr an pening perfrmance. Read and respnd t all reprts as necessary PERFORMANCES Attend the perfrmance that the ACTF respndent will attend t shw them yur wrk and prcess and hear the respnse t the prductin. Remind yur directr t let the respndent knw that a student designer will be attending the respnse sessin. At final dress phtgraph yur design. Yu can mentin any special things yu are hping the departmental phtgrapher will capture in his phts, but are ultimately respnsible fr dcumenting yur wn wrk. Read and respnd t all reprts as necessary Pst shw: prepare all designs and paper wrk materials fr cmpetitin and prtfli review 29
