3 THE COMOSITION Shirecked as commissioned y the Elmood Middle School Bands, Bloomdale, Ohio, under the direction o Justin Brinkman. The high seas have alays held a sense o mystery and attraction or those ith an adventurous sirit. Its unexlainale lure and the romise o oreign lands have enticed the likes o exlores such as Magellan and Christoher Columus, immigrants seeking a ne lie and ne oortunities, and even irates and treasure hunters. But the sea seemingly has a ill o its on, and has claimed the lives and shis o countless travelers. This iece exists only in the moment o tragedy and right. erormed ith a sense o urgency, the setting o this story is u to the students imaginative interretation. The iece egins in the oen sea hen tragedy has struck. The eal o the chimes sounds the alarm hile susended cymal and inger snaing deict the aves and the rain. The ominous entries o the dierent sized drums create a sense o anic. By m. 9, the occuants o the ill-ated shi must no make slit-second decisions to save their lives. The ostinato igure irst introduced in the clarinets in m. 9 must alays e layed in a similar style regardless o here it is scored. It is imortant that the lo rass and lo reeds ay close attention to the dynamic markings: accented in this iece does not necessarily mean loudly. In m. 3, the melody is in the lo rass and lo reeds. The triangle continues to sound the alarm. It is suggested that the triangle e clied to a music stand. While striking the steady eighth notes ith a medium eater on the ottom o the instrument ith the right hand, the student s let hand index inger and thum ill e oening o and inching + around the triangle to create the desired eect. In m., the rhythmic igures in the trumets, alto saxohones, ooes, and lutes reresent the anic and haste o the assengers, ut the melody remains in the lo rass and lo reeds. Attention must e aid to the dynamics o this section so that the desired alance is achieved. In m. 37, the haunting melody o an unknon ate is introduced in the alto saxohones and clarinets. The melody is eventually shared y the trumets hile the lutes, ooes, and ells carry the ostinato and the lo rass and lo reeds resent the drama. By m. 6, the oat has casized and the assengers are thron to the sea, rantically treading ater. Careul attention must e aid to the key signature as ell as the alance o all arts. The snare drum must not dominate the grou. In m. 6, it is imortant that the temo remain constant, though the eel shits rom our eats er ar to a long to eats er ar. To deict the loss o control and hellessness o the shirecked souls, three hymn quotes are emloyed. The hymn section egins ith Eternal ather Strong to Save (a 9th century English hymn associated ith the Royal Navy and the United States Navy), continues ith Nearer My God to Thee (a 9th century English hymn), and climaxes ith a quote rom the ourth movement o Beethoven s Symhony No. 9, hich incororates art o the Ode an die reude ( Ode to Joy ). It is imortant that each hymn e treated in a legato style. By m. 86, the icture in the listener s mind returns to the oen sea as the victims o this tragedy aait rescue in the rain. No clues to their ate are given y the music, ut students are encouraged to create, research, and resent the rologue and eilogue o this story. Make this a truly imaginative voyage! SAMLE
